Wheat Crop Weakens Market.
CHICAOO, Dec. B. Favorable weather
for the fall-sown crop of wheat In the
1'nlteii States had 11 weakening effect to
day on the local wheat market, but buying
by shorts censed the market to close steady
lit almost the Identical figures of the previ
ous close. Oats, corn and provisions were
firm.
Bullish enthusiasm was almost entirely
lacking In the wheat pit today, sentiment
Hmong pit traders generally being rather
bearish. The weather bureau predicted rain
or snow for the greater part of the winter
wheat belt and this forecast was mainly
responsible for the heavy tone which pre
vailed nearly all day. leading bulls were
apparently neither buying nor selling, and
In consequence, trade was dull and prices
fluctuated within a rather narrow range.
Jtecelpla in the northwest were again light,
although the movement Is still heavier than
at the corresponding time a year ago. Ar
gentina advices Indicated wet weather was
delaying harvesting in the northern district,
but the qualltv of wheat already harvested
was snld to be fair. There was almost no
tlemand for cash wheat anil prices were
steady. The market -cloned steady, with
prices a shade lower to a shade higher.

NEW YORK. Dec. 5. Violent fluctuations
and excited speculation in a limited num
ber of stocks were the fruit of the circula
tion of rumors which lacked confrmation
The movement In the stocks Immediately
affected had so much of an appearance of
artificiality that stock were sold In other
portions of the list and. the price move
ment was thus made Irregular and con
fused and at last acutely weak. The Wa
bash group was conspicuous on the ground
of rumors of a coming plan for financing
the needs of the group In which, It was
lniimaiea, me inriuence of E. H. Harrlman
would be seen. It waa this Intimation tnat
was the principal stimulating influence on
the group, although no authority was
offered for the report. The spasmodic
movement In Kansas City Soutnern
seemed based on no other consideration
than that It had not moved previously to an
extent commensurate with other low-priced
stocks.
Its consecutive rise of five points gave
way to a reaction In which sales wero
made In succession at concessions of as
much as 1.&0 a share.
The speculation was diverted into Reading
by a rumor that the second preferred was
to be exchanged half Into first preferred
and half Into common stock, as provided In
the terms of Issue, and the common stock
to be placed on a higher dividend basis.
This la a rumor many times repeated In
me pnsi ana it round no ofilclal confirma
tion today. Pennsylvania enjoyed some ad
vantage from the report that the dispute
with its locomotive engineers had been put
on a basis for discussion. The obvious ef
fort to take advantage of these sustaining
far-tore to effect realising sales decided tho
ultimate downward course of the market.
Unfavorable reports from Vienna of the
outlook In the Balkans had some depressing
effect. Another Increase in surplus freight
cars for the half month ending November
25 reported by the American Railway asso
ciation, was not liked and waa coupled with
the opinions expressed by several railroad
officials that buying of railroad equipment
would be slight for the Immediate future.
The bank statement gave abundant testi
mony to the effects of the withdrawals of
cash for export of gold and for restitution
of government deposits and of the bond
flotations of the week. It Is manifest also,
that with the more profitable money rates
the trust companies have become lenders
on an enlarged scale. The actual condition
of the clearing house banks shows a de
crease of t9.ol,400 in the loan item, al
though the dally average for that item,
however. Is KHO.200; but the t20.587.tioO loan
expansion of the hanks outside the clearing
house and the trust companies Indicates
the force of the week's demand.
Preparations for the day's subscriptions
to the Panama canal bonds figured In part
in the result. The decrease in the cash
holdings of the banks waa larger than
the preliminary estimate and It is believed
that the trust companies are responsible
also for these withdrawals, in preparation
for January disbursements. In consequence
of this action the week's clearing house
balances rose to $119,149,530, which consti
tutes a record.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, $3,5(,O0O. United States 2s, registered,
declined W per cent on call for the week.

Paris demands on London and enable the
Bank of England to get the weekly goid

same time that this American gold would
prevent a rise, in tho bank rate of dis
count. The closing tone today was generally easy
on unfavorable rumors from the contlnt-nt
regarding the situation In the near east.
American securities shared In the pre
vailing dullness. The low-priced Issue
spurted early In the week, but the enthusi
asm died out later and Berlin took its
profits, which cause.d a setback.
The news from Wall street did not en
courago a fresh commitment, and the mar
ket here followed New Yorka lingular
movement, prices rlorfing from one pnint
lower to two points higher than last Satur
day. Wabash preferred wa an exception,
being eight points dearer.

CATTLE As usual on a Saturday, there
were no cattle of any consequence here,
only five cars being reported In. For the
week receipts have been fairly liberal,
being about on a par with last week's rec
ord and a little larger than a year ago.
The week started out with corn-feds In
active demand and selling quite a llttlo
stronger. Since then the farket haa eased
off so that at the close corn-fod cattle
are generally Just about steady with last
week. One choice bunch of steer weighing
1.675 pounds reached $7.10 on Friday which
was the highest price paid since last Sep
tefber. Range beeves of good quality have
been active sellers throughout the week
and are generally quoted lottflic higher than
last week's close, although the feeling waa
a little weak on Friday.
Cows and heifer having quality have
sold pretty well throughout the week, and
at the close It Is hardly possible to note
any quotable change as compared with a
week ago. At the beginning of the week
the trade was active and a little bit
stronger, but that advance has practically
disappeared. Fair to medium grade have
eased off during the latter part of the
week and are a little lower than last week,
common canner being especially slow and
unsatisfactory sellers.
The best grades of feeder were active
I sellers throughout the week, commanding

week ago. On the contrary, the medium
kind of feeder and the common and trashy
light kinds have been slow and hard to

very liberal for a Saturday and the market
opened with a good shipping demand for
the better grades. Burn loads aa found
favor In the eyea of shippers commanded
steady or very close to steady prices. On
the other hand, packers' order did not
appear at all urgent, and, as a rule, they
were holding back, and when shipper had
filled their orders the n-arket became gen
erally 6ti'10c lower than yesterday. Thus
while strictly gocd hog sold up as high
as tV SO, a considerable proportion of the

The total receipts of hogs this week show
a gain over last wetk of almost M.0O0
head, and a gain over the corresponding
week of last year of about Z).'lt head. In
rther words, the receipts this week have
been almost double what they were a
ycur ago. The week started out with a
good stiff advance, hogs selling decidedly
lilgler again on Tuesday. Since that day
the tendency has been downward, until

8HEEH-Kecelpts of sheep this morning
were limited to a few lambs, which sold
very readily at a gor.il, steady price, fi.tio
oeing pain for good fed westerns. The re
ceipts this week have been very llheral,
showing a heavy gain over the previous
week and over the corresponding week i f
last year. At the same time the supply ot
really desirable killers has been . by no
means lurge; on the contrary, packer have
eomplained of the surplus ot Inforior grades
and the scarcity of finished slock. I'nder
tho influence of a very good demand for
finished killers and the moderate supply,
the market throughout the week has been
strong and In a good, healthy and en
tirely satisfactory condition from start to
finish. Lambs are a big 25 hm-liei; in
fact, the best lambs this week have ac
tually sold 3oc higher than the top of last
week. Choice light yearlings have also
been very strong seller, the In-at grades
reaching 16 50, which was considerably
higher than anything brought last week,
but, possibly, there u ome difference In
the quality. Wether and erne alio sold
to good advantage.
Theabove.lt must be borne in mind, ap
plies to strictly well finished sheep ana
lambs. Half-fat and unfinished kind have
been alow aoller throughout the week,
being neglected hy both packers and feeder
buyers, and It would he well for shippers
to hoed the warning against sending in un
flnishril stor k, as it Is not wanted and Is
bound to sell at unsatisfactory prices.
I lie trade In reeding sheep and lamD
has nut been very active this week, though
what few that have uirlved have sold at
good, Mt inly prices. The demand, how
ever, has not been very urgent. The em
bargo on eastern shipments on account of
