NEW YORK. Nov. 12 Transactions In
stocks underwent a decided shrinkage from
the recent activity today. Accompanying
this shrinkage In business was a wavering
nd uncertain movement In prices. The
tendency was at ail times hesitating and
the market movements were exceedingly
spotty and uneven.
The professional operators found thm
Selves much puxsled to read the signifi
cance of those mixed Indications and con
stsnt shifting of operations by the room
traders reflected this mood. The specula
tive element was disposed to work for 3
reaction In the morning when It seemed
that large additional sales to reaHxe had
been Attracted by yesterday's signs of
weakness. Later this element worked for a
recovery, when the realising seemed to be
completed. This effort was furthered by
the marking up of special stocks. The
languid response of the general list to this
demonstration In special stocks proved un
satisfactory and led to renewed doubts
over the speculative outlook. There Is no
stock on the list which has more sym
pathetic Influence ordinarily on the whole
market thsn United States Steel. Its rise
today to M. eclipsing by more thsn a
folnt any price ever before touched In
he history of the corporation, was a re
markable demonstration. The preferred
stock at 114 sold at a record price. The
moderate response elsewhere was, there
fore, the more noticeable. Outside of
Northern Paclflo the show of strength to
day was largely confined to stocks of
the lower grade and smaller prices, the
prominence of which Is accounted a sign
usually of the passing of a speculative
movement Into Its declining stagss. The
lack of special news to Hccount for the
heavy demand for United States Steel gave
rise to a surmise that a large and ob
stinate short Interest In the stock was
being driven to cover, on such distressing
terms as may be 'Imagined from the excess
of the price paid over that at which any
previous sales could have been effected.
The organs of the Iron and steel trade,
while detailing the many evidences of In
creased activity 1n that Industry and of
widespread receipt of new orders, expressed
a warning against what the Tron Age
railed the "absurd exaggeration" of many
statements current In regard to the Im
provement that has taken place and the
firospects for the winter. A violent slump
n the price of copper warrants 1n London,
wntch amounted to 1 3s 9d per ton, gave
point to the suspicion or speculative manip
ulation of the market for that metal on
recent advance. Prices of copper locally
were not affected, but a falling off In de
mand was reported, Indicating that the
Immediate needs of consumers have been
provided for. The copper Industrials were
not conspicuous here for a price move
ment In either direction, although In Lon
don they were actually depressed 1n svm
pathy with the action of the metal. The
Bank of England and the Bank of France
both made strong weekly returns and the
discount rate at Berlin declined.
The sales of $20,000.0u0 of a new Issue of
Illinois central bonds and the . Immediate
cloaing of applications for the Issue by
the purchasing bankers was regarded as
a proof of the healthy Investment demand
and of the good promise of provision of
facilities for the railroads In entering on
new work. The reports of orders for new
cars was in the same sense. The declara
tion of an Initial dividend on Colorado &
Southern stock was an illustration of the
results hoped for by purchasers Of lo
priced railroad stocks from the coming
prosperity which 1s counted upon, although
the earnings of that particular rallronrl
even through the period of depression have
marked It apart. The day's net changes
show some striking gains, but the restraint
on the movement of such prime speculative
favorites as Union Psolflc, Southern Pa-
cmc, et. faul. Amalgamated Copper,
Heading and American Smelting made

CATTLE There was the usual Thurs
day's moderate run of oattl and the qual
ity of the offerings wa hardly good
enough to attract much attention. Still the
market ss a whole was In a very satlsfac
tory condition,, pretty much everything
chanirlnir hands early In the morning
Everything went to show that packers
were anxious for beef steers, but the supply
of that kind was extremely light. There
were, however, a few pretty decent corn'
feds that sold ud fo $.50. There was also
a sprinkling of westerns, but the most of
them were on the trashy order. The feeling
was strong and had there been anything
toppy hero It would undoubtedly have old
quite a little higher than yesterday.
Cows and heifers were In more liberal
supply, a considerable proportion of the
receipts consisting ot that Kind. At me
same tlmo there waa a fair demand for tho
better grades of killers and the market
was quite active at good strong prices at
least. Common canners do not move any
too freely, but still they sell fairly well at

started out this morning
with prices around i'oc higher, but It turned
out to be one of those "runaway mar
kets," and It was not long until prices
were 16c higher, and some were pointing
out sales that looked 2oo higher. The
market was not overly active ot the ad
vance, but still most of the good hogs sold
in pretty fair season. The bulk of tho
hogs went at 85.766.85 and on up to 36.86.

feHEEP Receipts of sheep this morning
were very small and the quality gener
ally poor. It was a case of a good deal ot
trash and lot much elce. At the same
tlrre there was a good demund for any
thing that would do to kill and the feel
ing was that good fat sheep or lambs
would sell quite a little higher. There were
a few western twtl good enough to bring
44. ou, and a little bunch of natives, part
teat lings, sold up to 84 65, with native
lambs at $5.76. There were no good west
ern lambs to make a test of the market.
Anything In the way of feeders mat was
at all desirable met with cjuue ready sale
at good, steady prices. A feature of the
market during the last few days has been
the large number of old, thin ewes, the
kind that are generally described In the
yards as old pelUrs. Ewes of that de sorp
tion are always hard to move i,d It has
kept salesmen busy to keep them from
accumulating. Ul ewes ot that descrip
tion are selling all tin way from tl.oo per
hundred up lo 82.25. In fact, uulte a go. d
msny sold at and right around 1185. and
they were nut the poorest In the yards
either.
