FINAL FUNCTION BRILLIANT ONE Rear Admiral Emory Steams Oat f Amor to Join Admiral gperrr ad tTnltc tho Entire aaadroa. AMOT, Chins, Nov. . The second squad ron of the American battleship fleet, which, under the command of Rear Admiral Emory, has been In Amoy since October SO, as- the guest of the government of China, brought Its visit to a close this morning when, at 8 o'clock. It steamed out of the harbor bound for Olongapo, to Join the first squadron under Admiral Bperry. The distance to Olongapo I about 700 miles and the vessels should reach there early on the morning of November 8. The departing warships were given a demonstration In marked contrast to the apathy which was noticeable on their ar rival. The hill behind th beach were black with people who had assembled to view ths spectacle, and the firing of crackers continued for one hour. Promptly at 7:30 signals were made on board the flngshlp and at 8 o'clock the entire squadron was under way. One after another the white strips glided slowly to their position and then together the entire squadron steamed out of the harbor. As the American vessels passed the Chinese cruiser Fel Ting their crews greeted the officials on board with rousing cheers, and at the same time the Chinese fort hoisted the American flag beside the standard of China and saluted the departing guests. This salute was returned by the American flagship. Million-Dollar Reception. Th cost of the reception has exceeded $1,000,000. The Chinese government has been lavish in Its gift to the American of ficers and men, and the final official func tion on shore last night, the entertainment afforded by tho Chlne government, was declared by the Americans to have been, with the exception of Australia, second to none. Tho Chinese are delighted with the visit and they comment especially upon the excellent deportment of the American sailors. The battleship Georgia, the flagship of Admiral Emory, will leave the fleet and go to Hong Kong, where Admiral Emory will take a liner for home. The flagship will be In Hong Kong for only two hour. It will then continue for Olongapo, on the Island of Luion, and Join the other vessels there. Farewell Dinner for Officer. The admirals of the fleet snd their staffs, the commanding officers of the various ves sels and the midshipmen were last night en tertained at a dinner on shore for the last time. The usual toasts were proposed by Prince Yu Lang, one of the official rep resentatives from Peking. Admiral Emory replied as follows: "Our fleet everywhere has had a most friendly reception, but none has been more friendly than that accorded us here by China. Our enlisted men are very appre ciative of the attentions shown them at Amoy." On the conclusion of his brief address Admiral Emory and the other guests of the evening surrounded Prince Yu Lang and cheered Mm enthusiastically. Admiral Sah of the Chinese navy was then greeted by a blast on a siren and more cheering. The admirals and the captains then personally expressed their appreciation to the prince of the gifts presented them by 'the pro vincial viceroy. Each admiral has received a set of Inlaid blackwood furniture, four cases of grape fruit, eight chests of tea and n ho of curios. Each captain has been presented with a set of Inlaid black furnM ture and each flag officer has been given a number of pieces of silk embroideries and furnWure. Some very handsome embroider ies are being sent to Admiral Sperry, the rommander-in-chlef of the fleet. and In addition Admiral Sah sends him porcelain Image of Buddha. Chinese OflBclals Humiliated. PEKING, Nov. 6. Though the American squadron has left Amoy the matter of their presence at the southern port has not been more than mentioned 1n Peking. Officials are silent and the Impression of general humiliation at the fact that only a squadron came. Instead of the whole fleet cannot be concealed. The meagerness of the reply of tha foreign board to Admiral Bperry's message of congratulation on the birthday of the dowager empress has at tracted attention and it Is clear that the throne has been Indifferent to the whole affair. It Is generally realised and de clared In Peking that the corning of the squadron and not the main fleet will have an unfavorable effect upon present rela tions. The principal British newspaper In China; in an unfriendly editorial article today, approves the sending of a squadron Instead of the whole fleet, and refera to "America' gambit In opening a c mmercltl lot.ery after returning an Indemnity to which it wa not entitled." - The paper give varlou reasons why the fleet should not have come, saying, among other things, that China would hav mis interpreted a visit- from the entire fleet and that a visit of the entire fleet would have shown lack of appreciation of British sensibility.
