NEW YORK. Oct. 81. -The day s stock market was anected. plainly enough, hv a movement on the purt of speculative hold ers to get out of their holdings on the eve of the presidential election. It Was the supposition of olwervers In the neighbor hood of the stork exchange that this move, ment came trotn the lesser following of the powerful suet ulative leaders who hm-A controlled tho recent market. 1 he notion waa tiromntpd hv oneorlulr.lv over tlie posltinn and Intentions of the apec ulative leaders. They are credited with holding most of the floating market sup ply of stocks and with being shundantlv supplied wltii cheap credits to hold theni. Their ability to nut prices to a Mir her level after the election, thrrofnr l. n,. doubted. The extent to which a general day from outside sources for stocks will bs Biiriieica is what Is doubted. It was this ooum that prompted the cleaning up of speculative accounts which was In progress uiiny in continuation of the similar move ment yesterday. The circulation of re ports of the closing out of some very heavy accounts In Cnlted States Steel yes terday was an Influence In Increasing this tendencv. Sales for Ivondon account were an elfectlve factor In the mmV,.i tik cloned Ixmdon market on Mnndav for a holiday observance left today the last op portunity for pre-election liquidation from that center and advantage was taken of the occasion. News was not much attended to. although there was considerable discus sion of John D. Rockefeller announced ment of his political attitude and of the re ception accorded It. The extranrdlnory gains In net earning for September reported vesterday by the I'nion Pacific and the Southern Pacific were supplemented by the reports to the Interstate Commerce rnmmission of other transcontinental railroads for that perliol. showing increases In gross earnings and heavy cuts In operating costs. It was con sidered that the strength of these returns would opernto against the attempt credited to the railroads to bring about a general advance In freight rates after the elections. The lank statement presented no great surprise. The excess over the preliminary estimates of the cash losses reappeared. In part, in the cash gain reported by "other banks" which Include the trust companies and the Increase In the loan Hem of the latter Institution against the contraction of loans by the clearing house hank shows that they nre taking over loans, also from the hanks. The total, as will be noted from the table above, has been a little more than half as large as last week's large receipts and very much smaller than a year ago. The arrivals have constated almost entirely of rangers. Not enough cornfed steers have put 111 an appearance this week to make a test of values, but what few have arrived have sold quite readily at very satisfactory figure. The fact 1 receipt of rangers have been free sellers throughout th week packers have been forced to pay more at tention to cornfeds. There wa a fair de mand for desirable range beef and the market ait the close I 15cji26c higher than the close of last week so far as the better grades are concerned. This, however, does not any more than make up for the de cline last week. Common and Inferior grades have been slow sale all the week. The better grades of cows and heifers have been free sellr throughout the week and price on such are safely 26c higher than last week's close. This practically wipes out the decline of last week. On the other hands canners and all Inferior kind of cow atuff have been alow sellers, with very little Improvement in prices. The life and activity which ha characterized the tanner trade for some weeks back has to a great extent disappeared.' The tendency at the present time Is to widen the range between common canners and good to choice killers. Blocker and feeders were very active sellers during the early part of the week and prices advanced sharply. At the close some little weakness has been developed, as is very apt to be the case at the end of the week In that branch of the trade. Still prices are safely l&'ul&c higher than the low point last week. A good share of the hogs sold at $5.bo'.jo.75, and on up as high as $0,811. , While pi lees have fluctuated back and forth to some little extent this week, the general tendency has been higher and tlie prices paid today were generally .TV bet. ter than last week.
