The Aero club of France Is already plan
ning next year a grana prize race.
H. P. Maxim, the well-known inventor.
lniends to qualify for a balloon pilot as
soon as ne can get tne necessary papers.
The longest - dirigible balloon record Is
held by Major UroHS of Germuny, whose
airship flew thirteen hours without landing
tur supplies,
Prior to becoming an aeronaut, Henri
Farnam was a bicycle racr. and then an
automobllst. He won third place in the
neurit; n cup race in Ireland in
An aero club has been formed at Hart
ford, Conn. An active campaign to In
crease the membership will be started at
once, anu a uailoon secured at an early
ante.
Aeronautical law promises to become a
problem for legislators in the near future,
especially In reference to damages claimed
tor unintentional destruction ot property
vy aeronauts in mailing landings.
Wilbur and Orvllle Wright were printers
at Dayton, O.. In tbelr younger days. They
showed inventive genius while boys and
were always working on some device. Beat
oi an, iney always worked In harmony.
A compromise between the rigid and
flexible dirigibles la under construction In
Germany. It will be driven by four pro-
fiBllers InBlead of two, will be fully as
urge as the "Zepplln IV," and 1s intended
to be a transport airship.
A. M. Herring, whose aeroplane Is under
going government tests at Fort Myer, near
Washington, hHS worked fifteen years per
fecting his machine. His principal claim Is
that the machine will keep Its baiauce,
even though the operator shifts from one
end to the other of It.
O. Chanute, the bulder or airships and
author of several books on aeronautics be
lieves the ultimate type of flying machines
will preserve the feature of bridge trusulng.
He points out that It Is with thut type that
Furnam, Bell, the Wrights and De la
Grange are getting their best results.
Mme. Bulrette of France has been form
ally awarded the honor of having remained
longer In the air than any other woman.
Her balloon, the "Nirvana," atayed up
twenty-four hours. The best previous rec
ord, fifteen and one-halt hours, for a
woman was held by Mme. Lmalre, also
of France.
The Aero club of France having refused
to give Wilbur Wright permission to com
pete for the "Prix de Hauteur." the Aero
club of Sarthe has, according to Ls
Sports, decided to found a new prise to Iw
awarded to the aviator who shall rise from
the ground by any means that he chooses
to employ, and. 'ascending to a height of
ltie feel, cross a barrier of ballooneU.
A. Holland Forbes and Augustus Post
tell a stirring story of their fall of 4,000
feet when their balloon, the "Conqueror,"
burst during the world's race at Berlin.
'We traveled S.uuO miles," said Mr. Forbes,
"to go up In a balloon for eight minutes.
Of those eight minutes we spent six com
fortably going up to tha height of 4, out)
feet. The other two were occupied In com
ing down. And they were spent chiefly In
thinking we were In for a certain and
most unpleasantly sudden death. Nona of
the experts tan discover any reason for
the bursting of our balloon." Despite their
adventure, both men are determined to
carry on their experiments.
