one guns was fired. As the reports of the
saluting guns died away, the clouds

a most beautiful day. It was, indeed.

the flag and commanding officers repaired
on board at once to bo greeted by the
president and the distinguished people win

sage to his paper by wireless and it was

ward I saw that Mr. Ixjeb had promptly

interested to know that 1 have found a
simple, inexpensive way to waterproof i
matches, lnio some melted pjraffine (care
being taken lliat it was as cool aa pos
sible 1 dippett a f-w ordinary puiln
matches. After withdrawing them aud al
lowing them to cool it was found that they
scratched almost as easl.y us before being
coated with the wax. Several were held
under water for six or seven hours and all
of them lighted as easily as before immer
sion. When the match is scratched the
parafflne is first rubbod off and the match

or canoeing trips, as they do not altsorb
