NEW YORK STOCKS AN D BONDS
Market Has All Aspects of Narrow
Professional Affair.
VOLUME' OF 'TRADING SMALL
looslant Shlftlag of torrent llesios.
stretea Feeling of Hesitation and
I nrerlalaty on Tart of
Traders,
NKW YORK, Oct. 14.-The stock market
took on all the, aspects of a narrow profes
sional affair today. Its varying fluctua
tions were very meaningless and reflected
no ronvlctions on the part' of those' respon-
1010 ror the bulk of the dealings, but
merely nn attempt to effect a movement of
prices for trading purposes.
The volume of the days transactions
was meager and the constant shlftlnn of
the current prices demonstrated the feellnc
of hesitation and uncertainty of those tak
ing part in the market. Yesterday's dis
position to revert to minor obscure stocks as
a medium for trading became still morn
msrked today and was In itself an occasion
tor distrust. Bucli a movement often falls
In as a sequence of a previous movement
In higher grades of more active stocks In
n purpose to rectify the proportion of price
changea. A number of storks came Into
activity today which are often neglected
for weeks at a time; storks of the cheapest
grade and of the most doubtful value. Tills
stirring up of the list wss regarded as
ominous. To add to tho disfavor felt to
wards .the movement, a testing process
demonstrated a lark of support for some of
the storks of a class only a little suiwrlor
which were marked up yesterday. Sales of
only a few blocks of these resulted In a
collapse In the price. These evidences of
the degeneration of the speculative move
ment prompted the Selling of the general
list, which depressed prices.
There was no actual news to account for
the depression. The call money market,
however, continued to show a firmer tone
and to suggest some coming curtailment of
the superabundance of funds for speculative
uses, which has been the prime factor In
keeping tip prices. Some of the most In
fluential of the clearing house banks were
reported to be withdrawing some parts of
the loans they have extended for stock
market uses and the professional traders
were ready to Infer from this a changing
attitude towards the stock market on the
part of the powerful capitalistic groups
affiliated with these banking Institutions.
Last week's heavy loan expansion to pro
vide resources for the purchase of foreign
offerings of stocks, of course diminished.
while not nearly exhausting the supply of
loanable funds. New York exchange at
Chicago has risen to a premium since the
opening of the week. This can hardly mean
a suspension or interior demand for funds,
the demand on that account being Appar
ently undiminished, but interior bank re
serves are at so high a level that the de
mands on New York can be foregone to
any actual need of reaourcea here. Taking
up of new railroad bond Issues makes a
requirement on the money market. The
reopening of the labor controversy In the
Kngllsh cotton mills threatens a curtailment
of export demand for cotton and is having
an effect of holding cotton bills for tne
foreign exchange market, thus making a
factor In the firmness of exchange rates.
Discussion of gold exports, however, lias
been suspended. 'Reports of backwardness
in fall demand for anthracite were held to
account of the special heaviness of Reading.
The Harriman Paciflca were affected some
what by reports of Intended nrornerilnvs hv
the government to retrieve mineral lands in
Nevada included in the railroad land grants.

CATTLE there was a very noent run
of cattle here this morning although , re
ceipts were very much lighter than usual
on Wedneaday, there having been one week
ago 341 cars, two weeka ago 345 cars and
three weeks ago 351 oars, the arrivals
consisting almost entirely of westerns, but
there whs a large sprinkle of trash. The
fact Is there lias been more trash received
hera during the last week or ten days
than In a long time back. A good many
of them1 com from near points in Nebras
ka and Iowa, being on the native order.
While buyers were out early and picked
up a few cattle that Just happened to suit
them, the trade was a little slow to start
with. ,
Beef steers of good quality war not any
too plentiful and the market on that kind
was reasonably active, Willi prices fully
steady with yesterday. While there was
no choice or fancy cattle to put a top on
the market, good kinds sold up to 85.10.
There was a good demand and everything
changed hands In very fair season. Common
to medium grades, on which there waa a
little competition, wero as a matter of
course, not overly active.
Cows and helfere were steady to a little
lower. 11 waa very apparent that the wire
edge waa off the market and for the first
time In a good many dsys the trade waa
not what might be called active. Still there
wa a fair movement and it may be added
that cow. stuff is really bringing very high
prkes at this point as compared with
other markets.
Good feeders were also sought after and
they too commended fully steady prices.
Common to medium kinds and everything
on the traahy order waa Inclined to be a
little dull, owing to the large number of
cattle of that kind on sale. The market as
a whole was in pretty fair condition
throughout.

HfiuS The downward movement In hogs
still continues., prices today, being fully 20c
lower than yesterday. As usual, when the
niarKet Is breaking ao rapidly, the ..ttuulo
waa entirely lacking In life and snxp,
but atlil the hogs kept selling and the moat
of them changed hands In decent seHBnn.
A good many of the hogs old at 3o.65&5.65,
wlureas yesterday 8G.7Mj6.Kj bought a very
large proportion of the receipts. Shippers
will understand that the downward move
ment In values Is general, all markets be
ing demoralized In about the same degree.
As a matter of fact, -the market here has
really held up better alnce the brcHK started
than most any other market.
