S Arbitrage sales of stocks for London account on the local atock excharre today were estimated at aa high aa ln0,("w share, which waa aa much a the total sold previously since the war scare developed In Europe at the be ginning of the week. This selling was at tributed not only to Encllsh holdings of our securitlea, but to Indirect pressure through London from continental center. Large amount of United States Steel nnd Hock Island preferred were sold on what was be lieved to be orders from Holland. In a market as narrow as that prevailing at present, this repreents s formidable pro portion of the total dealings In the mar ket. Moreover. It Is genuine liquidation end has to be paid for, compered, with the balancing of buying and selling orders which makes np much of the usual specu lative manipulation In the market. It waa smsll wonder, therefore, that the bullish element In the snecqlatlon found the sup port of the market a discouraging opening. Values, In fact, were seriously Impaired, a ahown by the wide declines registered round the low levels. Artificial support of price which simply sffords a profit to this flood of forelsn llauidatldn has few at tractions and there waa little disposition to practice It today. If the foreigners were oem on Benin it was thought as wen to teks their offerings at concessions rather than hold up the market for them. i no nigh level at which crice of Ameri can securities are now held constitutea the Inducement for tliU foreign selling and not any aouma or inherent value, with the prospect of pressure to secure funds for filling war chests and the inducement to convert securities Into cash, the strongest market Is resorted to for that purpose. The relative sirenin or the New XorK securi ties market for that purpoe Is beyond dis pute. Hence the stream of stocks poured into it ror loreign account today, rue ef fect was seen in the rsrjld rise In foreinn exhsnge where demand was active for re mittance to pay for these home-coming American securities. The advsnce carried demand Sterling to a noint where small additional attraction by the FtarJi of France In the way of interest allowance In sold in transit would start an outward move ment of gold from New York. The weeklv atatement of the Bank of France showed an increase or gold holdings for the week of nearly 83,000.000 and the Sterling ex- Ch&nae rate advanced et Pnrla. Th Rank of England, in fact, made a very weak re turn, wim a loss or 8A.3wt.tioo in bullion holdings. The private discount -rate ad vaneea in xnaon. i;xcnange in New York on Pari and Berlin was lower In contrast with the atren4Tth of Sterling exchange. Money ratea here were not appreciably af fected, but the tone of the time money market was called firmer. Wheat prices ended today rwwlc a bushel higher than laat night. It Is not neaesesry to go over the details of the confused re ports of the day's occurences In the Bal kans and In the European capitals to reud a, serious opinion of the outlook In these various rmanclal signs. Weaknmaa in Brit ish conaols and French rentes waa not ac ute, but was distinct and bore out the tes timony of other signs, other Influences were practically Ignored. Northern Pacific got only the customary 1. per cent d virtend without tno noped-rot appearance of the "melon cutting," but It waa not a woak as some other high rallrORd stocks. It calls for record, twwever. that business contracted materially as the hour approached for the baas ball game. Which waa the only rival in interest among the brokers, to the near eastern question. Uonds were Irregular. Total sales, nar value, S3.21&.O0O. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Following were tha sales and range of prices on tne Bloc exchange today: New Vark Maaey Market. The total recelDts for th week to dale amount to a little more than one day's good run. Mors than that the quality, outside of a very few loads, lacked a good eal of being good today. a considerable proportion ot the receipts mis morning consisted of feeders, but un fortunately the demand did not seem very brisk. There were a good many lookers Inquiring after feeders and a good many commlaslon men had buying orders In hand mill tne trade was alow, due apparently to a feeling on the part of the buyers that firices which have been gradually advano ng thla week ar too high. With buyers reeellnx that wav the market could hardly to be otherwise than sluggish, with prices no more man ateaoy. Fat sheep were In pretty good demand. buyers all seeming to want a few and prices on that kind remained about ateady but there waa. nothing very good to put a top on ttie market. Horns very decent ewea sold up to 84.46 with some medium kinds of wethers at the same price, and with a mixea mien 01 ewes, wethers and year lings at 34.80. . All told there were not enough sheen on sale to really mske very mucn 01 a mantel. With fat lambs the situation waa decid edly against the sellers. The market at this point has been advancing very rapidly unaer ine inriuence or tne ngnt reoeipta, until fat lambs were higher than at Chi os ro. Yoeterday th Chicago lamb market broke badly, the top price there being only t.80, wl.leh waa paid for what the Chicago Drovers Journal described as choice) Idaho-rangers. At the same- tim good but- not cholcs Wyoming lambs sold nere yesterasy morning at 86.16, or sc higher than Chicago's extreme top 011 choice stuff. With Chicago reporting still lower market today buyers started out thla morning determined to get prices down here to a point where they would be somewhere in line with Chicago. Hence buyers hit the market th hardest that they could and they srer experts along that line. They actually bought soma of the ' same lambs here yesterday 60c lower, though they would not admit that the market really that much lower, explaining tha dif ference by saying that they bought them too high yssterday. The feeling was that a real choice bunch of lambs would bring lti.0CHje.10, which would be 26c or 35c lower than yesterdays top, Quotations on range or graas sheen and lamba: Oood to choice lambe. 8&0utM.35 fair to good lamba. 16.4066.76; feeding lambs, I4.0ih&.15; good to choice light year, lings. 4.8ffl.00: good to choice heavy yearlings, 34.fiOtM.bD; reeaing yearlings, tS.7644.36; good to choice wethers, 84.269 4.75; lair to gooa weinere, s4.ia.NS i.M ; reed ing wethers, S3. 40(34). 66; good to choice ewes, S4.004J4.60; fair to good ewes, S3.60a 4 00; feeding ewes, S2.003.00; culls and bucks, Sl.09ur3.e0.
