CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were vei y liberal, showing a decided gain
over Monday of last week, but a falling off
aa compared with two weeks ago, when the
receipts were the heaviest of the season to
date. There were no very noteworthy de
velopments In t lie trade, conditions remain
ing very much as they were at the close of
last week. While the market was a little
hn'-knanl in getting started there was a
fair movement when once under way and
most of the stuff changed hands In pretty
fair season.
Buyers representing packing houses were
out in the yards in good season in the
morning and the market on beef steers was
reasonably active, with good kinds at least
10c higher thsn last week. While the offer
ings were pretty liberal they kept moving
toward the scale at a rate that cleaned up
the most of them In fair sesson.
Cows and heifers were also free sellers
and they, loo. were ssfely 10c higher than
last week. As a matter of fact buyers
were reporting tin ir purchases as being
more than 10c higher.
The rains thst have been reported over a
greater part of the feeding belt seemed to
have a most beneficial effect upon the mar
ket (.or feeders, which were fairly active,
while prices were 10c and on th more de
eirable kinds as much as ISc higher thsn
iHht Week.

Former Governor Herrlrk of Oh la. and
Jndae Field Make Addreasea.
HASTINGS. Neb.. Sept. i.-tSpAo1al.
The ipuhllrsn rally at Ihe opera
house Saturday night marked the beginning
of srtive campaign work In this section.
Addresses were delivered by former Gov
ernor Herilck of Ohio and Judge AlUn
W. Field of Lincoln. At the close of the
meeting a Tsft club for Hastings and
Adams county was formed. County
Chairman Beach presided.
Judge Field, th first speakar, confined
his remarks principally to inatte.s of
state Interest. He said the populists hid
compjete control of the state government
In 1S97 and yet they failed to keep any
of the proinlse.4 on which they were
elected. Then he contrasted the popu
lists' failure with th republicans' ac
complishments, especially In the last leg
islature. All of the party pledges of two
years ago were made good and not a
single law passed by the Inst legislature
has been declared unconstitutional or
void.
Governor Derrick began his ddres
with s tribute to William H. Taft, speak
ing as a life-long friend of the candi
date. "Ohio has presented aeteial candidates
for the presidency," he said, " and all have
been elected. They have served with
credit to themselves and the uation, and
this ear Ohio has another candidate wici
is no less great than the others."
The former governor slltided to the
business depression In the east and tl
c la red that ail that was needed to el a it
up' all Industries wss sn assurance that
there would be a continuation of repub
lican policies.
"The bank depo-.lt guaranty proposition
Is not a party question," he said, turning
his attention to Bryan's latest Issue. "It
in not necessary lo vote for one particular
party or for another particular party to
accomplish or prevent the Insurance or
bank deposits. The question needs only
to have the light of day turned on it.
when it will disappear as quickly as 16
to 1. It Is as fallacious as any propo
sition ever put forth by your distin
guished Nebraska citizen."
"Bryan has given us the shivers on nu
merous Occasions." said Governor Her
rlcU. "but we are getting used to it."
