Omaha banks have not shrunk their loans,
but on the contrary, reports to the comp
troller of the currency show losns hsve
been increased and $.1.1.ri4,7;U more money Is
on deposit In the banks than In July, while
caali reserves hsve been made larger In
proportion to the deposits.
Th call of the comptroller of the curren -y
came late Friday afternoon and many of
the bank had not received official notice
that the cnll had hern Issued for a report
at the close of business Wednesday, Sep
tember 23. Rut the figures furnished from
the daily balances and reports show that
the report when made today will show
Omaha to be strong ss a western financial
center and with money enough In th banks
to meet all needs without shrinking loan.
The Omaha banks are provident In the
matter ot , making loans which fall due
about the time money ia needed for crop
moving. They made the provision this
year, but during the last thirty days have re
newed loans when It convenlenced custom
era, having enough money to carry them In
addition to furnishing country banks with
the money they will need for crop move
ment. Every one of the nine national bank o(
Omaha and South Omaha showed an In
crease in deposits. South Omaha banks
make a good showing, two of them being in
the $3,000,000 class and another creeping into
the $2,000,000 class this time.

Handsome New Synagogue Filled to
Listen to Impressive
Service.
In observance of Roah Hashone, the New
Year In the Hebrew calender, special ser
vice were held by the congregation of
Tempi Israel Friday evening. The hand
some new synagogue at Twenty-ninth and
Jackson streets was filled with the mem
bers to participate In the worship, which
was the first observance of the month of
festivals that are incident to the new year,
year.
Beginning at sunset Friday evening, the
celebration of the Jewiali New Year by the
Reformed church continues till the same
time today, and another service at Temple
Israel is to be held at 10 o'clock thla morn
ing, when tho rabhi, the Rev. Frederick
Colin, will speak on "Loyalty, " and the
special New Year's musical service will be
used.
. In Friday evening's service the special
music Intcndfd for the H' br w ol sfrvno of
the New Year was sung by the synagogue
choral quartet, and, In addition, a tenor
solo by Mr. Swarts. and the anthem, "The
Lord Is Exalted." added to the worship.
"Progress" was the keynote of Rabbi
Cohn's sermon. In part, he said:
"We begin tonight a new year. Our
faces, Joyful or sad, are turned toward the
future, and In answer to our hearts' mut
terlngs. 'Watchman, what of the night?' we
hear the reply 'The morning cometh, and
also the evening.' In nHture all is move
ment, all activity, nd even In this New
Year the greatest lesson for u Is progress.
"It us remember there is much before
us. Let us not rest under the laurels of
psst achievement, hut press on with our
past endesvors a spur to greater effort,
and tralisu new and loftier attainments.
"By purpose, Is not meant change for
the sake of change. Much that wonhl pa's
for progress Is only morbid desire for nov
elty. Progress Is change In the rlsht di
rection, in accordance with the laws of na
ture and the order of the universe. Above
all let progress be moral and Intellectual,
lie truly progresses who. each day, ea!i
year, finds himself not only richer and
