NEW TORK, Sept. 2S.-Profeslonal oper tor In the stock market have come to practical agreement In calling It a Stand ard Oil market. The attention of thl speculative element was wholly centered to day on efforts to determine what Standard Oil brokers were doing. This was because of the conviction that the market Is under the control of a combination of capitalists having affiliations with the Standard Oil company. The followers of the speculation had to be nimble to keep track of the con tradictory evidence, of what these million aire operators might be doing. The most simple method was to follow the move, men of Union Pacific. Until that stock advanced purchases were made of either that or other stocks. There wss a close observation of the operations of members of the firm supposed to be employed In th Interest of the dominant group. The difficulties of following this rough method of deduction Is obvious. As a mat. ter of fact, the market was In a constant state of hesitation and unsettlement throughout the session. Open selling of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Read ing by the houses which were largest buy ers yesterday broke prices from the brisk early advance. The openness of this wlng iin-ii came unoer suspicion and the market fluctuated under this doubt. There were diversions from time to time Into other stocks, but without conclusive effect on the market. The Hill stocks made an aggressive advance without anv new to ccount for It. Reports unronf irmed said that Rock Island had secured needod sup plies of capital. There was movement In the metal market and mlnlna- stoi ks in con cert The marking up of the price of copper ai me metal exchange had some bearing on thl movement. Indeed, the whole mar ket wa affected by this Incident, owing to the Close COrresoondnnre there ham heen between the speculative movement of stock na tne price or copper for some time past. Copper warranta were higher in London also. Westinghouse Electric had the hene- flt of the reoort that reurvanlznttnn wnillrt be effected without resort to the bankruptcy cnun. Little impression was made by the estl- matea of a considerable decline In bank cash for the week. When the stock mar ket wa disturbed early In the week. New York exchange at Chicago rose sharply. supposed to be caused by remittance from that center due to stock market contingen cies. The banks annear to have lost a con siderable amount, however, from excess of shipments over rtcelpts on the Interior cur rency movement. The subtreasury opera tion have absorbed some tl.l4.000 In cash. A 2,000,000 shipment of gold to Canada Is to be included In the estimate and a Sl.oOO.- 000 shipment made last Saturday did not figure in last Saturday's statement of the Clearing house Institutions. A decline of over tS.OOO.OOO In the cash item, therefore. would not surprise the banking world. The week- liquidation at the Stock exchange should operate to reduce the loan Item. The selling of stocks, however, waa matched by the buying and these cross cur rents always make the effect on the loan Item confusing. The rise In the exports of wheat and flour for the week to th largest total for the season confirmed earlier re ports of the effect of the Russian cholera situation. There were supplementary re ports of further heavy buying for export today. Th erfect of this on the exchange market 1 modified by the Influence of th English cotton mill shutdown on the supply of cotton bill. Notwithstanding strong demonstrations at new point In the market, the' uncertain sentiment remained unaltered at the closing. Honda were firm. Total sales, par value. 13,772,000. MUMMIES WHILE YOU WAIT Factories Torn Oct the Orewome Article While Tourlata Look for tbanae. While riding among the old Egyptian tomhs, write a traveler, the tourist Is usually approached by th relic sharks. You repel them. Then comes a fellow who ct mysteriously, look about suspiciously, and talks to your cicerone In an undertone. Your curiosity is aroused, and you ask. th guide for Information. It turn out that the man live In one of the foraaken tomb near by, and that, several day ago he had found a hitherto undiscovered grave with a mummy In It, from which h had dis jointed several members and taken soma trinkets found In the bandages. Th ob jects could be seen at his lodging,' If th traveler would care to tep that way. They are grewome object that are dis played a skull, two hands, and two feet. There are also some stone heads, a small bronze statuette, a couple of clay Image and the mummy wrappings. You pay, perhaps, little attention to tha latter objects on account of th possibility of fraud, but you are attracted by the dis jointed members that belonged to a man who walked the earth centuries befor tha Saviour appeared on It. True, they are giewsome. but they are just the thing tht are more closely associated with th name of Etfvpt than any other relic could be. Theie Is no chance for fraud In an ob ject of this kind. They are natural, shrunken and withered members, black, parchmf nt-llke. and you even detect a sijlcy odor hich you connect with th em balming process of the ancient Egyptians. Surely nothing more could be desired In tl-.e way of proof. At lant you have acquired a real curi osity, and you tannot help exhibiting your acquisition, on yui return n the hotel, to the pi'tipiietoi, without, however, disclosing Its source, as pm ral eed the poor Arab. The liol..-l man smiles. "Have you been rai:gh?" he aaya. "They are human remains sure enough, but they never grew on an ant lent Egyptian. They belpnrjrd to some durk-skmrd Arb who was burled for a few years In the dry sand of the rireert at an investment. It I a common trick; the condition of the ground and the absolutely dry climate, which ex clude decomposition and cause nature mummification, make th deception poar ible." Detroit Newa-Tflbona,
