Sept. i4.-The recovery in price wa uostantlaliy extended in the stocK market today, and the aavanc much less Irregular than the uncertain and hesitating movement of yesterday. 1 he maiket became furiously active and buoy ant towards the end. 1 ne speculative sen timent wa swayed almost entirely by tne oplnlons of what was being duns In Hit market by the Influential capitalist, who are credited with having tne. market 111 control. Thus the whole list ran oil rap Idly after an opening advance, when heavy (elllng appeared In the Hill docks and St. raul, aa it was assumed that tins repre sented a renewal of the important liquida tion In those stocks, which was the herald of the recent slump. I-ater there appeared enormous buying orders In I'nlon Pacific, Southern Pacific and Reading, which wete ascr'bed to the controlling interest! In the summer s advance. The purchase of many thousands of shares of these stock! by the houses which were most active all through the summer rise gave color to the supposi tion that support of the market had been renewed. By that time the earlier sales of ihe Hill stock snd of St. Paul were ascribed to a bear faction which had formed a project for forcing prices lower again from the vantage point of the rall. wnen the market turned upward, the bears were routed, and their further buying to cover snorts wa material In aiding the bulls In lifting prices. The defeat of the bears was helped by the announcement from the rostrum Of the expulsion of the nosrd niemners or the railed rtrm or A. J. Brown A Co. for their operations In the extraordinary market of Saturday. August 22, In an effort to break prices and afford opportunity to cover n enormous bear ac count ar a profit. While the transections of the firm as revealed by the Investiga tion of the Clock exchange authoritie were flagrantly reckless and Ill-judged, the eplrode was accepted as a renewed warn ing of the haxards of the short side of the market In the present conditions. The ur gency of the covering movement amongst tho shorts waa greatly magnified as a result. Further advance In the price of copper in the Ixindon market wa regarded aa a possmie index to the course ot tne stock market by the trading element. New bearing on actual condition affect ing values showed little change for the most part. The dullness of the demand for pig iron deprives that trade of an ap pearance of rapid Improvement. Foreign markets were favorably affected by the reception In Germany of the note of the power on Morocco, and this Influence had some reflection In the local market. The strong returns of the weekly atatementi of the Bank of England and the Bank of France gave a feeling of assurance regard ing the money situation abroad. Shares of the Railway Steel Spring company rose briskly on the declaration of a dividend, although at a reduced rate. It had been feared that no dividend would be declared, after the example of the American loco motive company, to which the Steel Spring company Is related. Less was heard of the political situation In the neighborhood of the Stock exchange, but traders assumed that whatever apprehensions may have been felt to prompt the heavy unloading of stocks early In the week had subsided. There was no lack In this connection of observation of the large profit! to sellers of stocks at the high prices of little more than a week ago In the repurchase at the prices touched yesterday and today. For eign exchange declined sharply. Favorable auguries were drawn of the money posi tion from the sale of SlO.OPo.dOO of New York City three months' warrants on a 2S per cent basis. Bonds were firm.
