.NEW YORK, Sept. 19.-Btocks failed to
hold the recovery which was enjoyed yes
terday, although there was soma early ex
tension of that recovery tociuy. Later in
the session the most active and prominent
atocka sold at the lowest prkes of the
week. '1 lie violent relapse was due tn re
newed suspicion that stocks were being
distributed by the powerful speculative
party thai has been credited with the prac
tical control of the market for weeks past.
1 ne support accorded the market yester
terday beg t a hope that this control was
to be reusserled and the reaction termi
nated. Tne pressure to sell on the advances
today dissipated this hope and an active
unloading of speculative holdings followtd.
1 he fcel.ing was in full force when the mar
ket closed anil at the lowest prices of the
week. Tint "political siure." which has
been ascribed as a factor in the market ever
since tlie Maine election result became
known on last Tuesday, came Into full dis
cussion again. The disclosures pointing to
the meas.ires takm in the past on behalf
of the Htandard Oil company . of ficials to
nfluence political and legislative action in
the interest of that corporation were re
garded with apprehension in the financial
district as threatening to turn the campaign
discussion and lntluem.es into these chan
nels flie speculative sentiment showed
Use f sensitive to the threat of inflaming
public opinion again in the direction of hos
tility to corporations. The tone of the re
newed activity In the presidential campaign
received the same interpretation from the
speculative element. Tlie mercantile agency
rvu ws emphasising the mndrato n,-
progtess making toward recovery in com
mercial affairs served to enforce tlie feel
ing of reserve toward the maintenance of
prices of secjiiths at a level based on
earlier sanguine expectations of the rate
ol this recovery.
A sharp decline In foreign exchange was
a feature of the day the special demand
which has kept up rales having been satis
fled apparently with the sailing of today's
steamers. The loaji contraction disclosed
by the bank statement showed that the
stock market liquidation is having its ef

considerable Interest in tha Hughes baby
does not appear strange when one remem
bers that babies are rare In the families
of national political leaders. In this coun
try few men attain tn the higher piano of
eminence In statecraft until they are well
beyond middle age. and as a ruin baby

Mrs. Hughes might be cited as tha pos
sessor of all the essential qualification
of the Ideal wife for a public man. De
voted to her home and family, she la a,
gracious and tactful hostess and able to
take an Intelligent and helpful Interest In
her husband's career. Bho Is fond of put

especial hobby. It would bo difficult tn
Imagine a more attractive picture than that
formed by Mrs. Hughe and her daughters,
Helen and Katherlno, In their graceful
green craft. It may be noted. Incidentally,
that the younger daughter, Katharine, has
likewise a nautical Instinct that finds ex
pression In her enthusiasm for a nilnlatura
yacht which she sails with the ali of a.
string.
It is said that young Hughes, when lie
began his legal career by Joining the office
staff of Wullcr 8. Carter, a man famous
for his discernment In picking "coming
men." was too proud to pay formal atten
tion to the daughter of the man whose
salaried employe he was. and so the court
ship was, in effect, suspended until young;
Hughes had won a place In the firm.
He was not obliged to wait many years
for this dignity, and suolt was his ma.nl
festatlon of ability that ere long Intricate
portions of the legal wctik of the firm
were transferred to him. From the outset
Mrs. Hughes, who was educated at Wells
and Wellseley colleges, WAS of real as

A number of Abilene people vlsltgd re.
cently ut I lead wood, S, P. Tlvey sought
out the grave of J. H. Hlckok, better
known as "Wild Bill." He was the marshal
of Abilene in the early daya and a famous
character. August 2, 1876, he was shot at
Deitdwood by Jack MeCall. Edward Z.
Kldd, who Htlll Uvea at Deadwood, wa
an eyewitness to the killing, an.J ha told
this story of the tragedy, which la ac
cepted as containing; the exact details:
"I was at work wainscoting a pall on
Main street, " said Kdd, "when Wild Bill
came Into the place with four other men
and they seated themselves at a table In
the center of the room. 1)111 had 111 back
to the .door. Unnoticed, Jack McCall en
tered, and. walking up to the bar, which
was not more than a couple of feet front
the table where the group was sitting,
sneaked out: his Cell's from his hip pocket
and without a word of warning fifed. The
bullet entered Wild Bill's head and camu
qui in the middle of his forehead, and,
glancing, struck one ot lh men M tha
table on the hand, Wild Bill's head struck,
the tabic and a minute later lie rolled (i
th floor. He died so quickly that he never
knew or sow the man who shot him.
"Immediately after firing. MoCall swung
his gun around and commanded everybody
to get out of the saloon, which they did
without waiting. M-Call stspnsd eul Intcj

he continued up the street.
"We yelled to some campers to stop lllm.
They came up behind him with the b4
of their rifles on him. He dashed Inlo
butcher shop, where we capture him.
Whe'n his gun was examined we discovered
that It had but one aiit-ll, and ha had
auieci wild tun with tliftt one. A Jury wag
gathered from the miners In the camp,
but aa there waa no law and some fsar
of taking the law into Its own hands. Mc
Call was freed. Ha fled t. Cheyenne,
where he was later captured by the sheriff
of Yankton. He wa tried, convicted and
hanged. .
I'Mcralta plea at the trial was that Wild
Will had killed his brother lit Tagas, but,
no one was ever able to discover (hat Mc
Call had a brother. The raul reason for lh
assassination was that Bill had wort Mc
Call's money In a poker game the night
before and McCall swore at the lim that
