Autrey, Welch and King, four are Den
verlts and one a Des Moines man. Mat
ticks missed It by one point and a num
ber of others came nearly as close to It.
Omaha's team batting average for the
season, counting Flournoy and Dolan as
Omaha men, Is .263, but as they wer
only with the team In part of the laat
series at Sioux City the team's proper
average Is much lower than that. Belden
finished with a higher percentage than
he promised earlier In the season, .2,
and Jimmy Ausin came out with a record
of .266. But If Austin's record could be
dated from the time he switched to a
left-handed batter it would land him in
the .300 class.
Omaha did not close t he season aa high
up in base stealing as It seems it should,
especially when the number of rapid run
ners is considered. Of the sixteen lead
ing base runner of the league Austin,
who ranks second, is the onlj Omahan.
But of an equal number of sacrifice hit
ters Omaha has five, King, Austin, Bel
den, Autrey and Franck.

Amatur Golf Tournament Now Battle
of Masters.
GARDEN CITY. L. I., Sept. 17. -With the
big field of contestant which started ln the
amateur golf championship narrowed down
until only eight men survive, the play to
day had resolved itself into a struggle be
tween the master of the game. The four
winner today will fight It out tomorrow,
until only two remain, and the last sur
vivors will meet on Saturday for the cham
pionship. Particular interest waa given to
the contest of today because of the fact
that Thoma S. Sherman of Utlca. on of
the republican candidate for the vice presi
dency, was to meet the veteran former
champion, Walter J. Travis. Travis had to
play a pretty stiff game yesterday to qual
ify, but his cool steadiness stood him ln
good stead and enabled him to win out
nfter five extra holes had been played. At
the end, however, the veteran declared that
the strain of the match had completely
worn mm out. "I'm all In," said Travis,
as he tolled back to the clubhouse after
the conclusion of the long game.
"Whoever meets me next will win and I
don't care much."
"Foxy grandpa," commented young Sher
man, who had overheard the remark and
who knew that he was to match hi skill
against that of the veteran today, "But
he doesn't persuade me that the match la
a snap."
Practically every man remaining In the
