While not pre cisely apathetic, today's stock market lost mucn m animation compared with last week' rate of activity. 'Hie dullness of the trading through much of the session was due to a waitlna attitude rather than to Indlfforence. The waiting was on an expected an nouncement of financial readjustments of the Harrlman Pacifies primarily. There were definite Intimations that B'tn such excitement was to come shortly and specu- ative surmise was alive as to lis nature, with no authentic information to guide. A segregation of t'nlon Paciflo treasury as sets and their distribution in the form of Mitres in a holding company whs a form of the surmise heard much of. News that E. H. Harritnani had rot returned to his office from his country home left the situ ation in suspense. A large proportion of all the dealings was in the two Harrlman Pacific stocks nnd Reading. Thce three stocks were lifted aggressively at tha open ing and at various times thereafter. The opening advance made outside buyers vhS bad placed orders with commission houses over Sunday pay the high prices. Thcic wa nothing new to explain the prominence of Reading and the rommo-lltips clause ecUion w.ta assumed to be the resort lor Its strength. Some impression was caused bv the an nouncement of an arrival of 17.iO.0iiO of Australian gold. This, it was explalmxl. was the belated result of a transaction closed when foreign exchange rates were lower than today, It is supposed. In fact, to be connected with recent engagements of gold In Australia by the Imperial Hank of Germany and to involve a siitrtlna; of credits designed to save the expense if conveyance of the money all the wav to Germany. Foreign exchange showed a t aroemng: tendency again and discussion was revived of probable gold exports. 1 he tall money rate here hovered around 2 per cent nnd the prolongrd period of 1 per cent call money was regarded as evidently ended. Time money rate were nuirked higher. Other departments of the nionev market reflects some increased Inquiry. In cluding mercantile paper, although rates are not yet quotably altered. Railroad traffic officials reported some Improvement In the tonnage movement. The Auguai cross earnings reported bv the Great Northern, however, showed a de crease of $1,383,970, or 24 per cent, compared with August of last year, the comparison showing but slight improvement over that tor juiy. The special . forecast ' of ' the weather bureau that the week would see abundant rams in tne drouth stricken districts did not preclude an advance In the ffrnln niAr- kets. Bonds were Irregular. CATTLE Recelnts of heavy, being the largest of any day no far since the opening ot the- range season, nd considerably mora than twice as large aa uu Mcinuny 01 last Week. It would up pear that the very good cattl market which prevailed at this point all last wee wa responsible for th big run today. in arrivals were made uu lamely ot oat tie on -the beef order, there being a good many big, rough, horned steer, suitable only . for kllltra. Thera -was also a very liberal aprlnklitig of cow aluff. with aulte a good many trashy to medium kinds of foeders without any great surplus fit strictly good, weighty feeders. i' a At the same tima that recelnfa wera aA large at this point other markets, pi cially Vhlcago and Kansas city, vers a in reporting very heavy run, and from all point came dispatches Indicating more -or less of a break in prloes. With such news at hand and with the yards full of cattle It was not surprising that buyers werx.a little backward about taking hold ant( were incunea to await ror rurtner ninN matton before buying very freely. Tuere waa aiau a great deal or sorting up to b lon, with the result that the forenoon waa well advanced before the cattle war ready to be shown and before buyers were reauy 10 get aown to business. Feeder buyers were the first to get down to business and they paid about last 4eek's prices for strictly good, weighty and well ;rea came mat would do to place on feed tne common to medium kinds of stockcrs ana reeaers were slow all the morning, with prices anywhere from weak to 15o lower. ctiuiuma tu me quality ot tne cattle sell ing. Fat cattle were a drag on the market all tne morning, packers claiming that the market was higher here last week in com parison than at other points, and they naturally took advantage of. the big run and unfavorable advicea from other selling point to pound prices pretty hsrd at this point. By reason of tha verv small otferlliars of fat sheep the market waa steady to a Httl trunger than last week a close.
