FRUITLESS VIADUCT CONFERENCE Coaarll t'easlders Orataaare at PrM Power (saisaar sad Itefera It o Jndlolary taaanilttee. Tha mystery of the Identity of the man ho wa found dying of cocaine poisoning in Syndicate park, September I, and who died, boforo receiving any medical assist ance In front of Melcher's drug store, has Been cleared up by the finding of a pawn ticket in the park near where the man was dlacovered. HI name I Alonso Eddleman, Aged 30 year. HI parents, Mr. and Mr. H. D. Eddleman, live near Ellis, Neb., and ar well-to-do country people. Eddleman had an uncle living at 2411 P atreet, who Is a watchman for Armour it Co. His name Is Q. W. Stipe. The young man ,had been In South Omaha aorna time. And hi uncle knew that he wa addicted to th use of cocaine. He reasoned with him to no avail, and finally gave him money to pay hla fare to Etlla, where he has a young wife, who especially needa hi care just at this time. It was with the hope of getting him home where he could care for her, and where he might escape th temptation to use the drug to some extent that the Uncle gave him the money. He supposed all the time that Eddleman had gone directly horn. He said he had read of tha death In the papers, but it never occurred to him that It might be his nephew. Milton Tyler, a conductor on one of the South Omaha lines,, was well acquainted with Eddleman, and came in alao Tuesday afternoon and identified the body. The body Is to be sent to Jensen, the nearest railway station to tn horn ot hi parent. Conference en Vladact. Another tedious and Ineffectual confer nc wa held yesterday between the South Omaha council, the people of the Highland district and the representatives of the Vnion Pacific, Rock Island and Milwaukee Systems over the proposed U street viaduct The railroad companies want a viaduct after plans of their own. Thesa plans avoid crossing tha large portion of the Rock Island property but throw the south approach onto the Swift property. This In turn will cause a suit with Swift and Own pahy before a right-of-way for the ap. proach can be secured. Swift and Company will contend that the course is not th most direct and servlcable. Th railroad Will reatst any other plan. In lieu of a viaduct, the council recently passed an or dinance condemning a street througr) the property In question. Thl will result In a suit. The" cost, to the city of the pro posed viaduct could not bo short of $a,00 and it Is stated by the railroad that the cost of forcing a way aeiss the railroad i property will be equally at expensive. City Coancll Prneeeainsrs. Tha city council met last night In ad journed session and considered, among other measures, the ordinance which wa Introduced to grant a franchise, or rather purchase the proposed hydro-electric power plant of the Nebraska Power company. The ordinance was Introduced by Swan Larson and was referred to the Judiciary commit tee. The ordinance proposes tha purchase of the plant at a cost of $2,600,000. Th company will receive Its pay In ten equal payments of $250,000 each. For this the com pany . la to-leed Us .plant at .Columbus when completed and all th transmitting apparatus to the city,' with a capacity of furnishing l&.OOO-horscpower dally. . Bids were received for the bridge at Polk street, as re-advrtlsed by thd clerk. The Western Contractors' Supply company of Omaha got the contract, bidding $342. This bridge was th bpne of much contention at the previous council meeting. In order to settle all dlaputea the blda were re jected. Wonatvr oat ty Option. SILVER CREEK, Neb.. fcpt. 7.-T th Editor of The Bee: A observing men have long foreseen, th dominant Issue In the campaign In Nebraska this fIK So far as th legislature Is concerned. Is to be the question of county option. This Issue has been forced upon us by the Anti-Saloon league, and for my part I am quite ready to meet IL. As openly proclaimed by ' Mrs. Armor, county option Is only a atep, and Is meant to be only a step, to state wld prohibition, and to that I am eternally opposed. I am not opposed to prohibition because 1 car particularly about the saloon on way or another, but because I will hot consent that any men or set of men, or woman, hall dictate to me a to what I shall eat or drink. That Is fundamental, and I Will never yield. I seloum drink, was nVr drunk in my life, and to me If would be no hardship If there wa not a saloon In the state. But that Is hot the question. Th question Is one of natural, personal right that the atate haa no right to Interfere with or abridged In all good conscience, I have Just as good a right to drink as any prohibition friend has to pray, and Just at good a right to have a house la which to drink aa he haa to have a nous In which to pray. I am opposed to county opthon, fur ther, because it Is destructive of local self government. Is It not a fair proposition that Omaha should have a right to govern Itself without th Interference of outdd territory? Or that Llnooln should govern Itself wlthrnt the Interference of the farm ers of Lancaster county? 1 am opposed to county option, because the very nam Is misleading and a cheat. There Is no "op tion" whatever In it. It propose to give the peop'e of a county the right to say they will not nave saloons, but not th right to say they will have saloons. It is not my purpose, however, here to enter Into an argument on either the ques tion of prohibition or county option. I have a practical suggestion to make to tho opponents of county option, and it Is this: In every legislative district where it haa happened that the candidates are both committed to county .option, as In my own senatorial district, consisting of the coun ties of Polk, Merrick and Nance, let those opposed to county option confer together without reference to party, select a candi date, nominate him by petition and then make an open, vigorous fight to th end of the campaign. And further: In avery legislative district where only one of th candidate is opposed to county option, lot every republican, democrat or populist who I opposed to county option Support that candidate. CHARLES WOOSTER. Card from Dr. llolovtchlner. OMAHA, Sey. 8 To the Editor of Th Bee: You will gTeatiy oblige me by giving space In your valuable paper to the follow ing: I take this occasion to express my sln cerest thanks to those who so magnificently stood by me at the late primaries, thus expressing the desire to have In me a repre sentative on the Board of Education from the south side of the city. I am especially gratified over th handsome pluralities given me In the lower wards, as the repre sentation Of a south aider was an Mlu with them when I .sought my appointment to the board a few months ago, and by the vote given me by th lower wards at the primaries the voter still had In view the election of a south side man who would represent them In the board, but which they failed to get owing to the failure of the upper wards to support the candi date from the aouth side. Yours very truly, DR. E. HOIOVTCHINER. To Moth Noise. OMAHA, Sept. 8. To the Editor of The Bee: I want to register a protest and ask help against so much "unuBual noise," and t don't know of anybody sn able to help as you. Manv of us mint llv downtjwr. and ahould live with some comfcirt. But the steam railroads, atreet cars and ntlier noises ar making night nr irly nnendurn ble.
