dren, less than that number could reconcile
themselves to study again and attend the
' public schools on the opening day, Tues
day. In the high school the enrollment
was large, far. greater than lust year, but
thlL fell off In the ward schools, though the
first day Is tiever tak'en. ea a criterion. All
the schools,' the high and thirty-four ward
schools, opened at 9 o'clock. The first day
was taken up with preliminaries, class
work to begin Wednesday.
. Congestion Is reported from the four ward
schools bring remodeled, especially at
Lothrop. - In this school two teachers will
have to agiu)uct classes In a room until
the addition Is completed. The other
crowded schools are Kranklln, Farnam and
Forrest. The. 'new. Vinton school was opened
v Tuesday for , the first time, but nearly
wary seat is reported as being occupied.
Superintendent Davidson and Principal
Qrarf of the high school both speak en
couragingly of the outlook and aay that
tha vpauilug of the schools Is auspicious.
Mr. Graff met many of the students Tues
day for the first time and Is enthusiastic
over the Interest the boys and girls of the
school are taking at tha start and feels
more confident than ever that the Omaha
High school' can fee ' brought to a level
higher than the high plane. which it now oc
cupies. .
Creighton university opened Tuesday
morning with an enrollment of S30 students,
tha largest enrollment on opening day In
the history, of the educatlonsl Institution,
exceeding that of last year by about forty.
Already the facilities are taxed to their ut
most and the faculty has begun to look
around, for additional quarters where the
work can be carried on. No building will
be dona this year, but Rev. M. J. O'Connor,
vice president of the university, says that
ft Is probable that an addition to the uni
versity will have to be built next year.
Creighton. university, tha head school,
teaches the arts, the Creighton Law, Medi
cal and Pharmacy colleges, while located
