CHICAGO, Sept. 8. Wheat prlcea on the
local exchange, today advanced nearly 2c
frem the low point ef the season owing
chiefly to confirmation of enormous
sates of flonr at Minneapolis yesterday.
All of the advance waa net maintained.
But tha market closed strong, with prices
up 4rTc to mOplSlc. Corn also waa buoy
ant and closed at net gains of UtfMe.
Oats and previsions showed gains of
moderate proportions.
Bullish sentiment was rampant In the
whaat pit almost the entire day, but qui
eted down considerably late In the ses
sion with a fear of possible realising
sales. Tha market showed slight weakness
at the start because of the poor response
of the Liverpool market to the upturn
here yesterday, . but a firmer tons soon
developed as a result of general buying
by oommlssMst houses, who seemed to
have accumulated a large number of buy
ing orders over night. This buying waa
chiefly baaed on the flour situation at '
Minnea-pohe, where 140,000 barrels were
said to hare been sold for export. An
eatimal made by a French trade Journal
on the total yield of wheat In France,
and which Indicated that It might he
necessary for that country to import from
15,000.000 to aa.CO0.O0O bushels ot wneat, was
another bullish fsctor. Rxport houses here
claimed that early blda for wheat for ex
ports were numerous, but that the subse
quent advance carried the market out of
the export sone. Cash wheat at the sam
ple tables were In fair demand and the
fremtume were the same as yesterday, at
ctnt over September for No. 2 red and
the September option to '.fce Over No. 3
red. Prices continued to advance until
late In - the day, when a alight reaction
occurred on profit taking. A 2 cent ad
vance in Minneapolis contributed to some
extent to the sharp bulge here. The mar
ket cloaed strong. Clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to St&ooo bushels.
Primary receipts 662,000, compared with
1.U1.000 bushels ths corresponding day a
year ago. Minneapolia, Duluth and Chi
cago reported reoeipla of fit cars, against
412 last week and 22 a year ago.
- Fear of fronts caused a lively demon
stration of bullishness- In the corn pit.
which caused an advenes of 1 cent In
the price of the distant deliveries during
the first hour. Osh com was steady to
a ahado easier. The market for distant
futures held firm all day and closed
strong.. - September waa about steady.
Looal receipts ' cars, with 48 contract.
Oats were active and strong early In
the day In aympatny with wheat and corn,
but quieted down later In the session.
Cash oats In the sample market were He
higher. The close waa firm. Local re
ceipts Ha cars.
A decrease of about lt.000 head in the
hog reoelpte at western packing centers
compared with arrival the corresponding
week rear ao had a strengthening ef
fect on ih provision.. market.. The market
closed steady.

NEW YORK, 8ep. 3.-8elllng of stocks
by specutetlve holders todsv wss Induced
by the perception thet some of the ss
sumptlnns on which they hsd acquired
them were not well founded.
The conspicuous feature was Amerirsn
Fmeltlng, which broke badly In continua
tion , of Its weakness of yesterday. The
Block sold 7 points lower thsn yesterdsy's
best prices. The contraction In the year's
earnings disclosed in the annual report
was supplemented ss an Influence by the
small holdlnga in the name of the present
management which appeared at the meeting
yesterdsy. As no action was taken at that
meeting towards placing on the bosrd rep
resentatives of fhe Standard Oil Interenta
another hoped for Source of strength vli
withdrawn from the atock. Intimations
found credence thar the recent flurry In
the stock to high price altitude! had been
made the occasion tor large reduction of
these holdings and of those of Inelde inter
eats rather than for an Increase. The prom
tnent place givvn to American Smelting In
the widely advertised laws on campaign
made :e example Influential In raising
fears of slmllsr conditions to be met In
other stocks. The metal snd Industrial
group were most closely affected in sym
pathy and lhelr weakness waa aggravated
by rumors of pressure to place copper
metal by some of the larger producers at
concessions. These Urge producers make a
mystery of their selling prices so far as
general public knowledge la concerned snd
no reports of quotations from their selling
agencies is obtainable. The American
Smelting eplaode undoubtedly had an in
fluence in the sugsrsticn that many
thlnga had been taken for granted as to
the progress of Improvement by those who
had been speculating on the long side of
stocks. The July net earnings reports Of
railroads coming to hand snd those of
gross earnings for the later weeks of Au
gust Indicate a slender foundation for the
more Sanguine estimates of the rate of Im
provement. The ssme Is true of the returns
from the Iron and steel trsde. where the
revival Is going on steadily, but admittedly
slowly. On the side of the crops it Is real
ised that some revisions of the most hope
ful estimates must be msde.
Sales of slocks by foreign arbitrage
brokers, while not lsrge In proportion to
the general market, were of Influence on
sentiment. Many of the sales were said to
come from Germsn sources and the im
pelling motive was said to be uneasiness
over the renewal of the Moroccan tension.
Conditions In the money market were little
changed. Discounts eased In Iondon in
spite of large withdrawala of gold from the
Bank of England for export. The Batik of
France return was weaker and discounts
sdvanoed In Berlin. The heavy deollne In
Reading Anthracite tonnage for August
compared with laat year was unfavorable to
that atock. American Telephone and Tele
phone convertible bonds were active and
strong.
The general bonds was Irregular. Total

Ihe market haa been In veiv satiafactorv

extremely large receipts, and prices have
Ln well maintained on all kinds, except
ounimon 10 medium tenders,
There waa a very fair domand for beef
steers and the market on all desirable kinds
was generally quoted as steady. In fact
there waa no noteworthy change or any
new features worth mentioning. The offer
intra lor the most part changed hands in
goi'd seaeon.
The market on cows and heifers wss also
devoid of any quotable change In eny direc

margen wwa tuny steady at least
There were very few stockers or feeders
In first hands. Good fleshy feeders con

other hand, common to medium kinds and
light, trashy cattle were a drug on the
market and very hard to move, it being a
question of finding a buyer rather thau of
prices

mars, inis means mat ine receipts are
uouoie or almost ueupls the record lor
any previous week and a a rent dei larsdi-
than for the corresponding week of it
year. In spite of tne large receipts, uio
demand haa been so good mat Uio supply
haa been kept very Well cleaned up. nen
the market closed last niahl there were
two strings of yearlings that did not get
into me oarn until late and were left un
sold, but sslde from that pretty much
everything hsd changed hands. As a mat
ter of fact, prices have been lower In syrn
pajtny with tna sharp break at all otner
market points, the large receipts also
having an Influence In that direction.
in is morning receipts consisted very
lsigely of lamos, in (act there haa been a
surplus of Ismbs all ths week. .Ihe ten
duicy of prices was still lower, and whlli
some sales did not show very much change,
a gooq many were HKonbe lower than yea
terday. This was true not only of lambs.
but of sheep as well, and would spply to
both killers and feedera. This meant that
Ismbs are pretty close to 50c lower than
last week and that old sheep are around
iftf-toc lower than last week. While
the break Is considerable, it is no
more. if aa much. as has taken
place at eastern markets. The trade here
continues in a good healthy condition In
aplte of the (act that the run ia ao large
and arrivals sli the week have sold freely
chsnslng hands about as fast ss they
could be shaped up and made ready for
aale. The market yesterdsy did not close
until Iste. the scales being kept busy
throughout the day. This morning buyers
and sellers were out early and stuff waa
crowded over the
could be weighed.
