Aug. 28 There was another pphiddlng -of the prices on the Stock ex cnange today, interspersed with frequent pertoos of profit taking. The day s oosi ness was fairly large, out again the bulk of the trading was in half a dozen Issues Reading, the Harnmane. Smelting, the Steel snares and Amalgamated Copper. Some new theories snd conjectures were advanced to account for the rtae in South ern Pacific, which made another new high record, bul were given no encouragement In official circles, obviously the large short interests which existed early In tne week hsve been put to rout. If not com pletely eliminated. The increased demand for bonds, a con spicuous feature of the market for the last fw days, has done much to restore confi dence In the market, and a broader and more general tnquirv for high class issues Is confidently predicted. Crop advices at hand today were in line with tne encourag ing news of the esrlv week, but later ad vices from the flooded district in the south fully confirm previous dispatches telling of heavy damages to growing cotton and serious losses in various Industrial and mer cantile lines. Pittsburg reports increased confidence on the part of the steel and Iron Interests and the recent course of the Steel stocks and kindred securities sug- r rests an all around better feeling In that ndustry. The stock market became dull in the early afternoon, but not until a dem onatratlon In Reading had carried that stock up 18 points. The buying came from Interests previously Identified with bull movements In that stock, snd was attended by rumors of favorable developments in the property shortly. In the group of special ties the feature waa Consolidated Oas, which advanced over 4 points on moderately large purchases. A final decision in the 80 cent gna is expected before many weeks snd today's movement was In some way associated with that event. The total re sult or the day was hardly satisfactory, some of the more substantial early gains being changed to lossea before the cloee. which was heavy. Estimates of the week s cash gain varied from $3,500,000 to $6.50.Ono. but whatever the showing tomorrow the bsnks are now so glutted with money ss to make no material difference. Further larga shpments of gold to Canada were made to day, the aggregate for the waek already exceeding $3.oTO.UiO. with Indications of a continuance of the movement. From bank ing sources Interested In the movement It aas learned that these shipments are being made for London, anich nappens to oe a debtor to tranada at this time. London bought very moderately here and a rise In copper mefkrhere was reflected in the bet ter tone of the copper stocks abroad. The most Interesting railroad return of the day was that of Atchison for July, wherein a heavv decrease In gross earnings was con verted into a net gain. The publication of this statement waa followed by a smart rlae in tha stocks and Increaaed activity in the convertible bonds. Missouri Pacific rendered ita reports for the fiscal year, showing a net decrease in operating rev enue of almost t3.h0o.'H. but like Atchison, its June statement showed a net Increase. Bonds closed steadv. after aome loss of their esrly strength. Total sales, par value, $6,440,000. Government bonds were- un changed on call.
