HARRIMAN ISSUES TAKE LEAS Cvatlaaed Ease of Money Market t aases lnereaaed Demand fur ' Boads aad High Ilea 1 Stoeka. NEW YORK. Aug. 27.-L'nder the influ em e of a heavy covering movement, in duced In large part by an evening up ' process or tli snort concerned in tne sus pension of A. O. Brown Co., today's tota market maae pronouncea progress in he dliection of higner orices. Again the eaders were the Harriman Issues, southern Pacific advancing to a new high level and In Ion Pacific selling at Its hignrst figures n considerably over a year, as nas rjeen ne case rignt along, no langinie news ai ended the upward movement of these stocks, but the board room was full of gossip about an Increase in the Southern pacllic dividend ana talk OI newer earninga by both roads for July. Encouragement waa found In the belief that no more un toward incidents are likely to result from the early week's excitement. An excellent Impression was created by the eaee.wlth which the new Atchlaon $17,000,0u0 bond Issue wss marketed, and by tne generally better demand for high clasa bonda. In specula tive circles a more cheerful view of market conditions seemed to be taken. To the rareful student It is evident that the large Increase In the number of shareholder in the more Important corporations has greatly reduced the floating supply of ae curltlea. Then, too, the continued ehesp. ness of money has driven many wealthy Individuals and Institutions Into the pur chase of bonds and assured dividend payers. Trading during the first hour waa almost aa large aa for the entire previous day, and such adverse factors aa the flood dam ages In the south and numerous unfavor able railroad returns seemed to call for scant attention. For the month of July fifty-five railroads reported a decrease of 18.67 per cent -In gross earnings. For the sefond week of this month return from tnirty-six road show a decresse in gross earninga of 11.7$ per cent, and for the third week twelve leading llnra fell off 12.08 per cent. Among the Individual state ments were iNortnern pacific, wnn a de ficit of $ti6jflOO for Jun, and Lake Shore St Michigan Southern, whose Quarter ended June 30. showed a decree ae of over $325,000 In surplus. The Poorest exhibit wss that of Southern Railway, which reported a de crease In gross earnings from July 1 of li.ew.wu ,tne tnira week or mis montn lone falling off 8186.O0O. That the western road are making very alow nroeress to ward recovery is evidenced in tne July statement of Chicago & Northwestern, which reported a decrease of about $750,000 in gross earnings. The Harriman Issues became buoyant In the late session of the market. and the entire list participated In Die rise. neaoina maae a net gain or 4. ana soutn- ern Pacific and Union Pacific acored net galna of 34 and 4H Dointa. reanectlvely Trading In the last two Issues constituted over 34 per cent of the day a business, which closed at top pricea, despite heavy realising for profile. Lackawanna on small tranaactiona gained 16H pointa. In the London market, Americana were strong, snd some demand for Erie Issues was reported from ttie continent. The de mand for money here continues at a atand still, with freer offerings. Foreign ex change advanced smartly on active bidding to cover snort contracts, nut later loat Ita early gain. Another $500,000 gold coin ship ment to Canada was made today, making the week'a total to date $1,250,000. There were few notable featurea In the weekly re turns of the leadtne- Euronean financial In stHutlons. The Bank, of Enaland total re serves increased nareiy xi.too.ono; making Its proportion ot reserves to liabilities Mi.su per cent, a gain of 1.30 tier cent on the previ ous week. The Bank of Franoe Increased Its gold holding by about $580,000. The general bond market waa strong. Total sales, par value. $6,430,000. No change in government bonds on call. Among the ar rivals were a lew natives and a few corn feda. but not many, the bulk of the re celpts being from the rangex In spite of the fact that the receipts yesterday were very lsrge and that the total for the week was right close up to lsst week s heavy run and in excess of the figures for a years Ago, the demand today waa very fair ana tne market aa a whole In a good. healthy condition. J Buyers all seemed, to want a few beef steers and were accordingly out In th yards in pretty good season in ths morning, The trade waa reasonable active without any very noteworthy change in the prices in laci, operators on tne market as a rule were quoting a good, steady market. On the other hand, cows snd heifers were. if anything, a little stronger than yester day. It would appear that In spite of the very liberal receipts, buyers have been un able to secure quite aa many cows and heifers as they could use. with the result thst the market during the last two or three dsys has been firming up. while the trade has been active. Pretty much every thing In the way of cow stuff sold In pretty good seaaon this morning. Stockers and feeders sold very well, prices remaining at about yesterday s notches.
