I LEVY RAISED TWO MILLS Tax Rate for County Probably Will Be Fixed at 14.4. BOARD WILL MEET NEXT WEEK I'uuimiulonrrs Kay the Increaae of 23,00O from lllsher Aaluatloue Would Nit Be Sufficient for Demand. The tax levy for. county purposes will be lncreaiwil probably about i mills when the 'lrvy Is made by the county board next wtx-k. This, at leant, Is the opinion of a majority of tha. county commlsiiloners, ho, with the "county clerk and county assetisor, comprise the assoakincnt board. According U the commissioners, the In crease of t.OOO which would be produced by the increased valuations if the levy was the fume as lust yaar, will not be suf ficient to meet the conditions that con front the board, and a boost In the levy will be tweeasary If the work on roads and bridges Is to continue on the earns scale as the last two or three years. Th commissioners, or, at Irust, a ma jority of them, admit a mistake was made last yer In reduolti- the lovy S mills. This reduction, they now say, was too largo. If a more conservative cut had been made. It would now be unnecssary to make an Increase. The cut lust year was due to the large balanoea reiualnlua; In the load and tUe bridge funds. These balances have been eaten up and contracts have already been let against the levy about to be made. The luoreasa In the levy this year will be In these two funds. The difference In the conUKion of the funds this year and a yvar ago Is disclosed by a report com piled by County Comptroller Solomon for the tnfjituallou of the board. Ind. A-2141 wmKummxuMvmmm L3 year the road fund had a balance of 17, 667.91 and this year It contains 109.39. The bridge fund, which contained 143,515.76 July 81, li07. now contains but tl3,t2.38. bom Claims rending. Further than this there are. pending against the road fund contracts and claims amounting to 30,359 and against the bridge fund amounting to 113.304, or about enough to cover the present balance. The levy of 1.5 mills for Ue road fund last year pro duced HS.774 and this year It would pro duce &1.712. but as there are already claims against the road fund amounting to JlS.000 more than the balance In the fund, the commissioners assert, the old levy would not produce enough money to carry on the work next year. While last year's levy would produce over K'1,000 on this year's valuations, the county gets but bnlf of this, the law providing tlu other half shall go to the park board. This would reduce the amount available to a little over JJ.COa The levy for bridge purposes was cut last year from 1.5 mills to .4 of a mill and It Is In this fund, It Is asserted, that the prin cipal part of the proposed increase will be placed. The county is grading a large number of roods and this work requires the building of many culverts and bridges. The commissioners say that unless the road campaign for next ear Is to be hampered the Increnxes In the fund must he rpade. It Is believed by the commissioners that the Increase will not have to be over ; mills. This will stir, leave the levy a mill below what It was when the slash of t mills was made last summer. Last year the levy was 15 4 mills, but the board cut 9 of a mill from the road fund and 2.1 milts from the bridge fund, niuklng a reduction of S mills. loo Much Esvense for Mellef. If It were not for tho unusual expenses put on the general fund this year some re lief might be had by transferring from that furd to the road and bridge funds, but un der tho circumstances the commissioners say tills is lmpi-ible.
