Chicago Also kllll kai Ike Klag af

The Chicago Cubs lead the Natlonkl
league In team baiting and fielding, stlli
have Mordecal Brown, g'ng of ail pitchers,
Evers and Chance, two of the greatest
base runners, have a slightly higher bat
ting average today than at the close of
last season, and el rank third in tne pen
nant raco with an average at this time of
.Bob against .7m at the finish of 1907.
It Is a curious thing that despite tl.S
slump of some of the Cub sluggers the
team as a whole, is lea, ling the National
league In team batting w.ih an average
of .261. the same average by the way that
Omaha has at present. Chance closed the
17 season as the heaviest Cub hitter with
a percentage of .iS3 and today Chance Is
hatting .i. Schulte was next to Chance
last year with .7 and when he last
played this year his average was .237. Then
last ear came Kllng .4. who is now
batting .28, anil Z mmerman and Johnny
Evers are at pre.ent the Cub sluggers
with averaaes of .M and respectively.
Evers clos.d last year with .Zin. linker is
another Cub who has picked up this year.
He closed IS"1 with .I'-l and Is now hitting
at .!S4. Stelnfeldt and She'cksrd are both
below last year. The team as a whole. Is
closer together, however. So far It would
appear that the slump In individual batting

noted In this connection: The team s per

the championship tournament. The first
white ball went kipping across the net at

eight entries, inrluitlng men from adjacent '

Chicago, things are properly lined up for a
battle royal.
(me of the men who have been welcnme'd
as contestants worth locking is Paul Gard

OniHlia Into th fold rather easily In his
first match at 6-1, 1-3 His form Is as In
teresting bctH to his opponent and to the
gallery as any of the men of whom great
things are expected.
Another of the morning's matches which
took mors than ordinary attention wa be
tween William Warfield. also ot Chicago,
and Robert Dinning of Omaha.. Dinning
has always played a good game-, but War
field Is the one who beat Oilman, chamrlon

up strongly against some of th older men .
who have won their honors her before.
C. Drummond Jones, th Yal champion
from St. Louis, took few chances with M.
J Sw.irts. and when the 'praying in that
match started the gallery waa a little dis
appointed with his form. It prrjred to be
largely an excess of cautiousness, however,
