Heavier recelpta. lower cable and more favorable harveat and country report waa the cause of the heavy selling, which easily grew to be the feature of the day's market. Wheat opened at closing values, but soon grew soft, aided by a general desire of all holders of long wheat to let go their holdings. Selling was general and buying upport was Inadequate to stop the decline. September wheat operated at lc and closed at 9"c. Heavy rains and the weak wheat market caused an uneasv fee'nng In com and with larger country receipts values were quickly soil lower, with little resistance. Liberal sale by holders caused a slump In wheat prices on the local exchange today, the September delivery cloaing at a net loss of lc. Corn s9 off Pslric. Oats were ltflc lower. The wheat market made a brief ahow of strength at the alart, owing to additional raina In the northwests whicn partially off set the effect of the weakness of foreign markets, before the end of th first huur. however, prices had started on the don grade, as a result of free selling of Decem ber by two Influential longs. This silling brought out considerable sales from smaiier holder, and before this decline waa checked r rices had dropped from mtflWc to lS'tf So below the high point. A prediction that the ahlpment of new mheat from Ne braska and northern Kanaas would begin within a few days Inspired additional bear ish sentiment. The break In corn also added to the weakneaa. Oeneral ralna throughout Iowa and other portion of the corn belt were tbe main reaaon for a aevere slump in corn prices. The September option was sold freely on the probability that recelpta will be much more liberal In the near future, while the December wa aold on the theory that Its premium over May was too great. The Illinois crop report for August showed a loss In acreage of 514, 300 acres and a gain of two point In condition, compared with the government flgurea. Soon FLOOD OF OFFERINGS COME Professionals Raaaa Themselves Short aide and Hammer List Kaeraetlmlly Decline Fol lowed by Rally. NEW YORK, Aug. 16 The opening of the stock market was watched wltn consider able Interest this morning, owing to the severe decline of yesterday. Hcprts that speculative p wis hsd liquidated heavily and that Important market Interests were selling were colored to some extent by the lark of support to special stocks yesterday. The market abrnd. however, show ed In lie reflection of the weakness here yesterday, and after early heaviness rallied so mat when business commenced hery the com parative changes were slight. This circum stance had an em-ouraalr g effect on the local speculation, so that first prices were not altered much from last night s closing, though the tendency wa downward. After a few minutes, the bulls began to buy cau tiously, and they met noi Important pressure of stock, grew bolder ard soon had a large portion of the list ruling a substantial traction above yesterday's closing. American Smelting, National Lead. South ern Pacific snd Rock Island were in special demand, the reassuring official statements regarding the latter road s financial obliga tion having a tonic effect on the itst.' The rlne, however, soon terminated when the tradera perceived that stocks were being fed out as fast as the market could take them. The professionals then rared them selves on the short side and hammered the list ent rgttti ally, especially the metal gtoup American Smelting brok rapidly to l'-4C, a loss of nearly three points, tne decline being accelerated by the execution of large stop-loss orders. Amalgamated Copper was also conspicuously weak and large sales drove I'nltcd States Steel down to 44. The general railroad list meanwhile offered good resistance at various points, but I'nlon Pa cific had an Interval of decided weakness, when It sold down to l4i. In the final dealings there was a gerjeral covering movement, uf extensive proportions, which reduced general losses to a trivial fraction and advanced SL Paul to a point above yesierdav's closing. The bond market was steady. Sales, 2S50. 00. Cnlted States 3s, registered, advanced V per cent or call during the week. NuinU-r of sales and leading quotations en stock were a follow- mick. It'th. Th arrivals hav consisted almost enurely of ra.ige cattle, there being very few corn- feds or native of any kind. Kor this season of the yetr. range cattle are showing considerable quality. As will be Inferred from the above, th supply of beef eteer ha consisted prln- clply of rangers, with only a sorinkllnK of corn-feds. While the total receipt of cattle have been liberal, the proportion of oeer ieers lias not ocrn ucru miRr. Tills. In the face of a good demand, has kept the market in a very healthy and as a rule aatisfactory condition. The trad ing most days haa been reasonably active, so that the supply ha changed hands in fair season. Prices have ahown com- 1 paratlvelv no change from day to day and i at the close of the week the market Is I about wbere It waa one week ago. The market on corn-fed cattle, on the other hand, ha been none too active at any time during tha week Fortunately th? re celpta. a noted above, have been light, eo that In spite of the fact mat ouyers nave seemed to prefer range cattle price have huwn ory little change. Cow and helfors nave been in very liberal supply all the week, a cons-idrrahle proportion of the receipts being of that kind. Fortunately there was a good buy ing demand, but the Cattle came in ao rapidly that the market on all pretty fHlr to good cows and heifer slumped off on Wednesday and Thursday. At the close of the week they are generally lwl&o lower than laat week. On the other hand there has been an unusually active demand for the common and the medium grades, gen erally known at canner. and the tendency on that kind ha been strong and they are a little higher than last week. Th general rains throughout the coun try have Improved the propects for corn and grass, there being a noticeable Im- firovement In the demand for fed cattle ast week. All kind of cattle showed strength during the early part of the week, especially light stockers, which ad vanced quite sharply. Later on In the week, with receipt very liberal and with a tendency towards accumulation In the hands of the speculator, there waa an easing off in the market. The best kind of fleshy feeders remain about steady, but the medium kind and light steer closed 104rt5c and in some case 20c lower. The receipts of hogs this week have been very moderate, there being a falling off a compared with the previous week of b.ss neau ana a aim heavier decrease a compared with a year ago. The market ha shown a good many changes, fluctuation having been more rapid and wider than usual of late. Thus the week started out with a good, sharp advance, which was followed on Tuesday with an other advance carrying the market to a point that waa the highest reached In a long time and 30c higher than the close of last week. Then commenced an equally rapid decline, the low point being reached on Friday, when the average market waa 124c lower than the close ot the pre vious week, or 224c lower than the high point on Tuesday. Today reaction leave the market only a ahade lower than it wa at the close of last week. Representative sale: K. At. 9k. Tr We. Ar 9k. Thus at the close of the week the general mar ket on sheep waa JOfl Jic higher than last week. -The trade during the latter part of the week was very satisfactory, the market having a good, healthy tone.
