PEACEFUL TRADE CONQUEST Such it View of Harriman-Gould Rail road Alliance. MUTUAL BENEFIT MAUI ELEMENT GUILD CANN0TSEND SHOW Commercial Club Mast Disappoint Ap peal of Basin for Minstrel Clrrva. . "Bring your Commercial club to Basin and give us a minstrel show during our fair. September 1, I, 3 and 4. This territory Is all yours. ' Now Is your opportunity. J. Uereumshaw." This Invitation was received Tuesday, by Commissioner' J. M. Guild of the Commer cial club from the secretary of the Business Mt-n's club at Basin, Wyo., and arrange ments were at ones made to take the club to Basin and give the show. But Dave O'Brien the end man, who says, ' Sometimes to get ahead of your profession, you must go way behind," re fused to go to Basin unless the manage ment secured him a new wardrobe. He said he was wearing an old outfit, which Julian Eltlnger wore when playing "The Gibson CoOn." and he would never take such tattered garments to a big fair. Joe Kelly, famous In "Honey Boy" and now sales manager of M. E. Smith A Co., was called up by telephone and told of the engagement to go to Wyoming and put on a minstrel show: "Sorry, but I have Just signed to piny In James Forbes new play, 'The Traveling Salesman,' replied Kelly. "Going to quit minstrels?" "Yep, picturing the drummer In rural communities and acting like a salesman Is more to my liking," said Joe. "Getting my lines down now trying to look like a for midable personage besides. Good-bye sorry; may have to come back to the legUI mats after while." All down the line the performers of the club found some excuse for declining the cordial Invitation to give a minstrel show at Basin during the fair In September, until Commissioner Oulld threatened to Inv port a flock of oriental wrigglers and fore ward them to J. Bercumshaw of Basin to give Salome dances. Facing all these dif ficulties, Mr. Guild gave It up, "We Need the Players," comes nearer describing the condition of my minstrel troupe than "We Need the Money," said the manager. "Wo would like to go to Basin and put on 'The Mimic World,' 'Follies of 1908,' 'The Re morse of Salome,' but really I do not see how we can, and I have written to the Basin people telling them that we are really to make no more trade excursions this year." While In Wyoming on the Trl-state trade excursion, the Commercial club carried a "Merry Widow" bend, which became somewhat famous for its stunts, and the Kansas City papers referred to the ex cursion as a minstrel show. The Impression seems to have rotten nut in Basin' that the morning train , c,ub put 0J mln,tre ,i,ows at fairs and street carnivals, and while Mr. Guild says he would be glad to accommodate the people of Basin' he cannot do it as his "troupe" Is broke. - LMU . "I believe Omaha has the best chance of ny city in the country," writes Mr. Ryder to the Commercial club. "We will cer talnly do everything possible to secure the meeting and there now seems little doubt that the Nebraska delegation at Seattle will succeed." Mr. Ryder has sent telegrams to state presidents attending the meeting and Tues day wired John H. Tuthlll of Omaha at Seattle that the marching clubs would be organized and drill work begin at once In anticipation of the meeting coming to Omaha. With the national meeting of the Eagles and the national meeting of the Retail Jewelers' association, each of which will be attended by from 6,000 to 8,000 delegates, Omaha will have some big conventions dur ing 190. s peclal Excursion Fares Via Grand Trank Railway System limner 1008. . Students of the rstlroad map of the country maintain they do not see an at tempt at consolidation In the recent advent of E. H. Harrlman Into the Gould coun cils, but rather an alliance of the hugs systems whereby warfare between the two will be stopped, a great expense cut tP and a division of the territory ami cably arranged. For some time these two giants in tne railroad world have not been on ths most friendly terms ami when George Gould started to build his Western Pacific from Salt Lake to the Pacific coast Harrlman threw every possible obstacle In his way. Harrlman wanted a transcontinental line from oast to coast and he did not want any Interference In his plana. He secured this and thers Is no doubt the Gould Interests suffered considerably when Har rlman secured a foothold In the east When Gould returned from Europe It was evident he had not secured the aid he had expected and was open for negotiations which were not slow in materialising. While the hard times were on It was almost Impossible for the magnates to rals the money for the resumption of work in the west or any part of the coun try for that matter. The fact that the builders of these new Western roads were at swords points did not help any In put ting confidence of the people In the lines. Now with the word gone forth that peaco once more reigns In the railroad centers It Is hoped by the magnates the people will loosen up and buy some of the rail roads stocks and bonds which are offered for sale. The Union Pacific recently is sued $50,000,000 In bonds and the Donver and Rio Grande $150,000,000. Denver Has Ambitions. , The building of the Moffatt line is ex pected by the Denver people to make that city the center of the new Gould-Harrl man combination. Construction work on this line has now reached a point which threatens to make that line an Important factor In transcontinental business. As soon as It Is built a short distance fur ther both the Union Pacific and the Den ver A Rio Grande may be connected with It by short spurs in such a way as would save the big lines a haul of several hun dred miles. The completion Of this line. the Denver papers claim, would put Den ver on a transcontinental line from Omaha to San Francisco. When the Western Pacific, a Gould line, Is completed between Salt Lake City and San Francisco the Rio Grande will become an important link In the Gould transcon tinental system of railroads and anything which cuts down the mileage will be of Inestimable value. The Western Pacific Is scheduled to be completed In about ten months with the lowest gradient of any of the western roads, which, with its few curves and snow sheds will make it a most formidable competitor of the Harrlman lines. In view of these things Denver is lookjng for great things because of the Harriman-Gould merger. If both the Union Paclflo and the Gould lines decide they want the Moffatt road It Is likely they can arrange to use the line at least and thus shorten their running distance. Mew Competitor of Hill. Another keen competition will soon be Inaugurated in the northwest, for the new Milwaukee line Is nearing completion to combat for the Pacific northwest business With the Hill lines, the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern. Present estimates are that the new Mil waukee extension, welch Is expected to be completed about the first of the year, will cost about $77,000,000. This Is about $5,000,000 more than the original estimate, though sufficient funds are said to be In sight for the completion of the road. The extension Is LSS0 miles long and runs from the former terminus of the Milwaukee In South Dakota to Seattle on the Pacific coast. . The work waa started about two years ago and when completed the road will be ono of the most Important additions to modern railroads. It will open up new and rich countries and will also furnish competition of the Hill lines, which have had practically their own way on the business through ths northern tier of states. TZZmt: k,m! This would mske a garage over 100 feit In length with storage and repair shops on either side of a cement driveway. Thosa who kept automobiles In this garage could run through from one end of the building to another and all others could have tho privilege who have the nerve. Heading out either way drivers could run their machines either out on Farnam or on Harney. Incidentally the speeding automobiles would have a haven of rest from the vlgl- isiii motor cycle police. Dodging into the Delta garage, they could give, the tirnal for an tutendant to drop the hg steel doors the moment they entered. The police would be baffled for moment and while they were planning to raid the gar age and rapture the speeders, the auto mobile would leave on another street al most a Mock away and be far from the maddening officers when the door opened again. . it. ..
