I7c NEW YORK STOCKS ANDBONDS Interest in Market ii Apathetic and Volume of Dealings Diminishei. ATTEMPT TO LIFT VALUES FALLS kvery Bid r.t Advaare firings Oat Offerings Close Is Irregala Band Market Is "teady. NEW YORK. July 29 Interest In stock market became apathetic today there was a material contraction in the snd tno volume of dealings. The speculative ton at the same time wa.i heavy. Early at tempts to advance prices soon developed that stocks were being supplied to meet the bids at the advanced prices. This supply of stinks diminished at a moderate recession and left the market in a dull and sluggish condition. There was no encouragement to bid up prices with the obstacle to be met of free selling orders above the market. On the other hand, there wss no such urgency in the" sell ing as to encourage the bear party to offer prices down. The passing of sev eral events which have been looked for ward to was psrtly accountable for the neglected condition of the market. The publication of Judge Taft'r letter of acceptance, the quarterly report of the earnings of the United States IStecl cor- f ortlon and the declaration of the regu sr dividends on the Harrtman Pacific roads proved to have pent their lorct largely as msrket far tors with their pub lication. The supplementary statement given out with the report of steel earn ings showing an advance In the avemg' dally booking during July to 72 per cent of the capacity of the works was ac cepted as the most Important item in the statement for Its speculative bearing But even this was regarded as having prompted the large accumulation and thu advancing price In the stock whlcu has occurred during July. With these various Items of news out of the way the mar ket showed. Its usual desire for new factors to point the next step In the spec ulation. '1 he day's news did not .--apply this factor. Some disturbing effect was produced by the confused reports cir culated early In the day of a suppos. d serious automobile accident to William lv. Vanderbllt. Some recovery followed when the reports were known to refer to u mis hap In which the capitalist had itt been Involved. There was some waning of in terest in the rumors concerning the ad justment In the affairs of the Gould railroad properties In connection with ttje 38. 000. 000 Wheeling & Lake Erie noLrs falling due on August 1. The steps to be taken to meet this obligation were made a mystery of snd the information on the subject consisted of rumors that bankers were In consultation over the details of the plan. The reticence of the supro.iej fiartfes to the plan was believed to be due n part to the tactics of negotiations. An upturn in the wheat market waa made the occasion of reports of damage to ship ping wheat In tne northwest. Thpre wa nothing to Indicate a marked change in the conditions of the crops. 1 lie esti mates of private experts on the cotton crop promise an Improvement of conli tlon for the month to be shown by the government report soon to be Issued. With the decline In activity In stocks there has come a languishing in thu in terest in the bond market, which was made the cause of some puszled complaints on the part of bond dealers The new output of bonds has been sufficient ap parently to supply the present demafd. The prices at which bankers hold the new Issues also is held by the bond deaiei 1 to be unduly high. The new Central Pa cific first refunding 4s when Issued are being dealt In on the curb and liavs dropped to below the price at which they were taken from the bankers, thus dupli cating the experience with the Union Pa cific refunding 4s. Pkg. 407 1.934 Total CA'ITLE Receipts 2.123 1.934 S.01S of catlls were ex Wednesday, only 78 tremeiy light lor a tars leig reported in. About onc- ialf of this nu cr consisted of tows and .leifers, with a sprinkling of feeders and a consid erable amount of trashy stuff of one kind and another. In other words the supply of beef caitle wss quite limited. Still there were a few westerns, some of them pretty good. . As is apt to be the case with receipts so light, the trade, had a dull and lifeless sspecl. largely for the reason that there were not enough cattle to create any activ ity: rncti generally looaea sieaajr wn 1 yesterday, wltiv now snd then something I thst packers Just happened to want selling a little stronger. There were no choice cornfeds on sale, but pretty decent cattle sold up to 36.75. With something like thirty or forty cars of cows snd heifers In the yards, the mar ket showed vei y little change In any direc tion. The trade was at no time very active. Bill I the offerings kept changing hands, so that a reasonably early clear ance was effected. The offerings of stockers snd feeders were rather limited. In fact, owing to the light supply of beef steers packers picked up quite- a number of cattle that under other circumstances would probably haro gone as feeders. As wss the caso in other departments of the trade, prices on Sfteders were without any very noteworthy change.
