Indiana for which he waa already drawing
a pension.
The penalon department at once got busy
and discovered that the James Morgan of
company A, Fifty-fourth Indiana Infantry,
waa dead and that prior to his lath he
had been drawing a pension for that aer
vlce and, following hla death, hsa widow
had no difficulty In aeourtag a penalon
aa Ma widow and waa now drawing that
penalon and bad been drawing It for a
number of years. Indisputable evidence
waa produced from his nelghbora and
friends aa well aa oomradea that the dead
Jamea Morgan had served In the Fifty
fourth Indiana Infantry and In company A.
Both Men from Stmt Place.
Jamea Morgan of Omaha, who still In
sists that he is the Jamea Morgan that
rendered the service in company A, Fifty
fourth Indiana, does out know of any other
Jamea Morgan, though from the penalon
records It la shown that tha two James
Morgans hall front tha same vicinity In
the Hooaler state. It was not really es
sential that th Omaha James Morgan
should have claimed credit for aervloe In
company A, - Fifty-fourth Indiana, Infan
try, aa he was eligible to th age penalon
from hia former service In the Thirteenth
Indiana and for which he wa already pen
sioned. He has a certificate of aervlce from
the adjutant general of Indiana atating
that he did serve three months In the Fifty
fourth Indiana.
The question confronting th pension de
partment Is, which Is the real James Mor
gan, the dead or tha living one. Both have
furnished Indisputable evidence to the com
plete satisfaction of the pension department
that both are and were entitled to a pen
alon under the name of Jamea Morgan,
The dead Jamea Morgan was pensioned on
the basis of his service In the Fifty-fourth
Indiana and the living Jamea Morgan Is
pensioned as due from his aervlce In th
Thirteenth Indiana and he produces the
evidence that he served In both regiments.
JOHN H1BBARD IS DEAD MAN
Victim ' of Sknll Fracture Finally
Identified by the Local
Police,
The body of th man found with his
skull fractured In th rear of the Drexel
hotel Sunday morning and who died shortly
afterward at the Omaha General hospital,
was positively Identified Wednesday morn
ing at the Davis undertaking parlors by
several former fellow employes as that of
John Illbbard, for soma time employed by
Installment houaea of the city aa salesman.
Illbbard worked for the C. F. Adams In
st ailment company several weeks ago, but
left Its employ and worked for Christ Outs
chow on the latter'a farm near Blair. He
left Blair Friday and came to Omaha and
from all Information gleaned by the police
he went on a big spree.
At the Inquest held over the death of
Illbbard the coroner's Jury returned a ver
dict Tuesday evening, that Hlbberd came
to his death aa the result of a fractured
skull, partially due to blows received at
th hands of L. A. Peterson, proprietor of
the Safe saloon, Sixteenth and California
streets.
l'oicr.-on was arraigned in police court
Wednesday morning on a complaint filed
by the county attorney charging him with
manslaughter. The preliminary heart tig
was postponed until August 8, and Peter.

pathised with the under dog, Johnny was
pulled off another small urchin Wednes
day afternoon when he waa pounding his
victim unmercifully. The spectators sym
pathlxrd with the vanquished and bought
all hie pup'-rii. while Johnny looked on In
contempluuus silence.
"Ah, lie was latching a butterfly," he
said, when asked why he had thrashed his
small competitor. "He ain't goln" to
ketch no butterflies when I'm around. I
treated htm Just like he treated the bug.
"You must be Irish," said one spectator.
"Naw. I'm American," said the kid.

what he can to-ward enabling Colonel Ii. II.
Harrows, custodian of the federal building,
to sleep at nights.
Colonel Barrows Is aging perceptibly, and
It Is all on accourX of that clock. The col
onel's waking hours are harassed In reply
ing to Inquiries about the clock and the
causa of Its perversity. At night he dreams
about It. In fact, the clock Is becoming
a nightmare to the colonel.
Colonel Barrows was observed pacing the
corridors of the big buildlrg Tuesday morn
ing In evklunt mental perturbation. He
waa thinking about the clock.
"The amount of lntereet taken by the
general public regarding our big tower clock
la ahown by tha auggeatlons. Inquiries and
complaints which reach this office at reg
ular and extremely frequent Intervals,"
said he. "Tha truth la the clock aa In
stalled nearly ten yeara ago, waa a good
clock and la and was a good time
keeper. Our main trouble has been with
tbe dial face. We have never succeeded In
Betting the dial of this clock so that tt
can be seen two blocks distant at night
time, or. In fact, at any time. The various
contractors have complained of tha diffi
culty 6f keeping the machinery of the clock

"W. J. Connell tha other dy offered to
buy red paint for tha whole face of the
dial and paint tha hands white, tf I would
have thla work done. Another lawyer
writes that tha dial ought to ba painted
black and the hand white. Still another
wrote the department that the clock ought
to be tagged with a leather medal and
aent to tha Junk heap. Another advised
that the dial be painted a Khaki color and
tha hands white, and so It govs.

take up this matter with a view to securing
the best possible service out of the old
clock. I know as well as any one that the
public cannot tell what time It Is two
blocks away In the evening, and I will do
all I can to help remedy this defect, but
the public must understand that we have
been trying to solve this problem for eight
years.
"The night Illumination of tha dial must
be made from within, and thirty-six gaa

We oannot prevent the shadows from the
bracing of the dial being thrown on the
dial and thla la one of the principal trou
bles. It Is a big problem, all right, and
there la big money ahead for the genius
who can devise a successful plan for solv
