Additional report of damage to th growing crop in the north west and an improved demand for the cash grain in the aoutnweat had a strengthening cceci toaay 011 the local wheat market Tha Bepiemr delivery closed at a nt n of Corn waa up c. Oata were &'c nmhtr, and provision were a tnsne to 10c lower. The strength In the wheat market devel oped toward the end of the first hour, and (.onunuad unabated throughout the remain der of the session. Scarcity of offering In the pit mad the bullish demonstration eas ily possible. The chlrf reasons for the up turn were a number of crop damage re ports from the Dakotas and an advance in the price of cash wheat at Kansas City i.ther strengthening Influences were Im proved export business and a forecast for .-.tiaul revpts-.her tomorrow, . snarly to Iriie ttiAfcion the market waa rather easy, owing to selling Inspired by more rain In the northwest. The close was strong-. Septem ber opened a ahade lower to a shade higher at 04fcc to S04e. sold off to MMnW.c and then advanced to 9IHc The close waa at 907c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 17,700 bushels. Primary receipts were 4)12.00(1 bushels, compared with 6O8,0u0 bushels the corresponding day one year ago. M'nneapolls, Duluth and Chicago re torted receipts of 348 cars, against 349 cars last week snu !nl cars one year ago. The corn market waa rather weak early in the day, because of aelllng by local shorts, who were actuated by the contlnu snce of favorable weather conditions for the growing crop. During the last half of the session the market rallied on active de mand by the commission houses, brought out by the upturn In wheat and oat. The close was strong, with prices almost at the top notch. September opened unchanged to V,o higher at 76S" to 76Hc. sold off to bc and then advanced to 764i(a7tJ'4c. The close was at 76VtjC Iocal receipts were 134 cars, with five cars of contract grade. Oats were active and strona:. The July lelivery wss especially strong, and ad vanced nearly to above yesterday's closing 'lsrure.. Other deliveries sdvanced about lc. The strength was largely due to the ex tremely small atocks of contract oats In store here and to the continued small move ment from the farms. An urgent demand by shipper f"r cash oats helped to strengthen the options. The market closed strong. September opened unchanged to He higher St 444p to 4Sc, advanced to 4SNe and Closed at 4H"4)fr45'4e. Local receipts were lot car. MOVEMENT IS IRREGULAR Possible Political Kffect of Standard HI Decision Offaets to Home Kiteat Rise Wfctrk Followed Its Aaaaaaeement. NEW YORK. July 23 There wns manl fest growth of general panic pal Ion In the transactions In storks today, commission houses reporting Increased orders fr m a scatttred clientage. The market broad ened perceptibly and embraced an lncrea Ing number of securitie s not often trad, d In. The !mg period of dormancy of pome of these ahlle an upward movement lis I been gnlng on In the general maiket mak- s them susceptible to a spasmodic i,"ud Justment to the new order of values wuli h offers startling contrasts In Hie pMces made with those prevailing whn d a:higs last occurred in them. Such cr.annea wrr In evidence today in many inst trce - Ai the same time active profit-taking wss going on In the favorite trading st' ck and the price movement bad a very ltregnlr appearance In consequence. This was one symptoms of the lessened artiricialliy of t ie market. Movements larkd the msehlne-Lke pre cision characteristic of the esr'lT ct-ig s of a speculative csmpalgn, when "Po a tions are almost wholly In the hand- of ;i few leaders actng In concert and d. pend ing on devices of manipulation to mcIiW, their efforts. Such growth of oatHe d -mand as is now being seen In ihe sio k market is the object sought bv the earll-r professional Operations, and when It l secured there Is usually no time lot in taking advantage of It to transfer to specu lative holdings and secure the profit ac crued. This profit-taking, while ptrfecily evident from the action of the market to day, wss conducted with csutlon-, and (h? control of the movembnt was not aban doned at any time. The professional ele ment amongst the room traders, however, was disposed to read In this ihe proba bility of a turn In the movement and they were keenly alert to detect slans that the top had been reached. Experimental shirt sales were adopted from time to time In the effort to feel for the top. Coneentraied selling of various stocks, a large part of the selling coming frofn a single house, kept alive a suspicion that the important financial Interests, credited with rosier ni the late rise In stocks, were reducing their holdings and taking their profits. There was a supposition that a large accumu lation of holdlnga had been effected In an ticipation of a decision reversing the 2. Ono.OiiO fine Imposed on the Standard Oil company, and It was assumed that the handing down of that decision yesterduv would prompt some selling out of thisi accumulations. The decision continues the subject of active discussion In the financial district, with general agreem-nt on its probable effect In reviving demand for corporation securities. This effect is especially expected to be marked ab:oad, where the levying of the fine last year was the cause of widespread distrust of the ability of American corporations to escape encroachment even to the extent of con fiscation. On the other hand, there was some difference of opinion over the possi ble political effect of the upsetting of the government's case against the Standard OH company and the reflected ennsequen' es to be spprehended In financial affalis No assistance was received from abroad In sustaining prices of stocks, the harden ing of discounts In London, the declining condition of the Bank of England and the Macedonian trouble combining to keep for eign markets unsettled and depressed. The price of copper was aeain advanced in New York and in London, and news of th country's crop continued favorable, such strength as was shown in the grsln market being attributed to foreign demand. There was some pressure lste In the dsy which reduced the previous advances considerably and made the closing tone Irregular. Ronds were strong. Total sales, par value, $6,090,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Number of sales and leading quotations on stocks were as follows- mim. High. Lew. Close. anal, ropper. ex-niv 41. There did not appear to be enough beef rattle on aale this morning to create very nuch enthusiasm among buyers, with the result that the market was pretty slow snd dull throughout, but still about s.esdv fiiices were maintained, there being very title change as compared with yesterday. Another bunch of cornfeds sold up to $7.70, the same price ss was paid for them yesterday and the day before. While wi st ern cattle were no higher then yesterday they were around 25c higher than on Mon day, so that the market although rather slow and dull today Is nevertheless fairly tatlnfactorv ao far as prloes are concerned. The market on cows and heifers was In sbnut the same condition as the strer trade, there being little change In any direction snd not much life or activity to the trade. There were very few atockers and feeders In sight and not much Inquiry, the trade on that kind of cattle being limited and prices In consequence not very strong.
