Julv 20 Considerable seH- Ing to realize prom came in the natural otiler of thirgs on. today a stocK market auer tne attractive aovancea ot last weK. lie feature a Coil I tins opratlun that at tract, d must attention, however, was the manner in which these offerings were ab sorbed nnd the small unfavorable efteit produced on prices. There was restraint apparent on any further upward move- mint In stocks which had become most buoyant by the end of last week, but mi snow of positive weakness at any impor tant point In the martiet. There were vari ous new points of iMisiiive strength which nerved as sustaining forces lor tne whole list. There was llttle'news bearing on special properties and the movement was based Hlmi'St wholly on the growth of confidence in tne general outlook and the Improve ment In speculative sentiment as applied to the industrial, financial and commercial outlook as a whole. Thls found expression In some substantial increase of demand for stocks as well as In an expanding volume of buying on bonds. Commission houses reported a more general participation In the buylna on the part of t tie clients scat tered throughout the country and outside tne class of habitual speculators or the wealthy class. Foreign slock markets also sent orders to this market, tne attraction or snaring In the movement here being heightened by the comparative stagnation wnicn persists In rorelKti markets, in tnu bond market the broadening tendency per sisted. Par value of bunds sold at the Stock exchange last week rose to over 217.000.000, which represents an Increase of over 812.0OO.ow over the sales In this week of last year. It compares, moreover, with a voltime of more than 310,ih).0(j par value late In June, since which time there had been a steady Increase in bond sales ut the Stock exchange from week to week. The bond market shows other signs of Im proving health, especlnlly In the Increas ing number of Issues of varying sine com ing from first hands and purchnsed by bankers for resale. The relief of the con gestion In this department of financial af fairs Is regarded as of prime Importance in Keeping up the movement towards im provement In general affairs which has set In. Railroad traffic officials gave testi mony to this Improvement, but in guarded terms and with allowance of hot moderate degree of Improvement. A substantial In crease in the movement of wheat made up a factor that could not be Ignored In this connection. The recommendations In the northwest have gone far to reassure senti ment over the spring wheat crop and made an Influence both in the wheat and stock markets today. The undertone of alrenKtli In the railroad stocks Is maintained by the widespread conviction that measures arc In train to bring about an Increased rate of compensation to the railroads for the transportation service. The further read justment of wage schedules In the Iron nnd steel indurtry, which .was effected last week has been followed by reports of fur ther resumption of activity in those Indus tries and this was a factor In stimulating the stock market. A rise in the price of copper in the London market also helped A rise In Standard Oil In the outside market was clt"d by the professional ele ment aa evidence of the nature of the backing for the movement to advance stocks. Supplies of money continue abun dant and no apprehension Is felt on that score for the future, although the markets are recognlied to be on the threhold of the annual Interior demand for currency to move the crops. The stock market aath- ered renewed strength In the latter part or tno nay ana ciosea at suDstantiai aa vances throughout. Honds were strong. Total salee, par value, 34.448.000. CATTI.K Receinia of cattle this muni- Ing numbered i.67 car, a against 24o cats last week and eventy-one iais two weeks ago. To put It another way, the receip's oi cattle were the largtst ti.at they havo been on a Monday since October of last ear. The arrivals cansisiett almost en tirely of rangers, there being, only a mall prinKiing oi native ana tornnui. mtn were, however, among the nat.ves a few pretty good killers. While the westerns were principally on the beef order then; was, nevertheless, quKe a sprinkling oi leeders. Cows and heifers made up a large pro portion of the receipts It betng ts.tmated that ther.e were close to 100 lars of that kind of cattle on sale. vt Ith suih large rete p s in sight and with the heavy slump at Cuicagu i.st we;k In tneir minds, buiers were very slow and backwatd about taking hold. They were inclined rather to hold back and wait fot later ueveloptnenis before doing very much business. Tne Chicago Drovers Journal of Saturday quoted thai, market, for ti e week, aa demoralized from start to tin so, with closing prlies 604? i0c lower than at the close or tne previous ween, as tins mar ket did not experience anything like such a heavy break, buyers seemed to feel that they were entitled to a iiill further concession at that point. It wa an extremely dull market through out the day, but still the cattle kept fell ing, a few at a time, and when the market final, y closd the bla- bulk of the cattle i a.l changed handa. Prices were safely HQioo lower than last week's close on practically all kinds of cattle. As a matter of fact a sale now and then might not show that much ofr, but on the other hand there were other cattle that had to sell lower than that. This applies not only to beef steer but to feeder as well. Cow and heifer were also dull and while some were onlj quoting the market 10c lower. It would be sate to put tne general decline at waloc.
