flags of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Sher
wood, who loft Chicago, recent on a wed
ding trip west.
An adventure In which Sherwood rescued
Mrs. Sherwood, thoa Miss Margaret Wil
liams, from tho horns of an enraged bull,
was the Introduction to s friendship which
ripened Into a warmer sentiment and a
proposal of marriage.
Early last December Miss Williams, then
a private stenographer at tho Hammond
Packing company, was passing alone Ex
change avenue on her way to work.
Suddenly bar attesMen was attracted by
shouts and dies of alarm. She turned to
discover a maddaoas bull, escaped from one
of ths pons, rushing down upon her.
Toe frightened to move, or oven scream.
Miss Wlllams was In danger of being gored
and trampled to death whan she folt herself
llrted from bar foot and swung bodily over
the fence. Before she realised what had
happened ths angry animal crashed up
against the fonpe and tore off boards In his
Creasy.
Met ees from harm, Mies Williams
turned to discover her rescuer. On ths
same side of .the fence with her she found
Mr. Sherwood. He was In the offices of
Russell & Freeman when ho discovered
the girl's predicament, and rushed to her
assistance. With no time for explanation
ho picked her up and lifted her bodily over
tho fence, arriving there just ahead of tho
bull himself.
Sherwood brushed a little dust from Miss
Williams' skirt and thn asked If as ooul
corns around and talk it ever soma time.
She said yes, and tby wero married.

groom is a clerk In the Brooklyn post of flee;
the brtds Is Miss Vloletta Mildred Loud, a
graduate of Packer institute. Just 11. and

young Regall was very devoted to Miss
Loud.
"On. that's all right. " said Mrs. Kennedy,
tho aunt, "but. of course, they're both so
young that nothing will oomo of It."
Ths other evening there was another
musiceJo at ths Bath Beach villa. Toung
Mr. Regall was one of tho guosts. Next
morning Mr. Loud and Mrs, Kennedy found
e ladder up against the window In Miss
Vloletta's room. And likewise ths family
automobile was missing.
They heard from It an hour later like
wise the mystery of the ladder was ex
plained by tho same telegram, which read:
"Alfred and I are married. VIOLETTA."
They had gone all ths way to Port Ches
ter, N. Y., from Bath Beach, to be mar
ried, and they deemed It best to have the
knot tied before they told about It, lust to
be sure. And If they thought there was
going to bo parental displeasure, they were
mightily mistaken.
Brides Fees' a Heelee.
Walking under a ladder, sitting thirteen
at table, seeing ths moon ever the left
shoulder such things are as nothing In
ths minds of two Chlogo girls, when com
pared with a doubts wedding as a promo
ter of bad luck, relates ths Record-Herald.
So the Misses Sarah,I4a and Uertha
Andrews Perry, daughters of Mrs. I. S.
Perry, are determined, although they are
to be married on the sams evening and In
ths same church, that they ' will not brave
ths dire portent of a double ceremony.
Death for one of the four parties to ths
undertaking Is the penalty they fear would
evertaks them were they to bravo the old
superstition.
Ths brides explain that they have done
all In their power to avert a double wed
ding, while they will be married on ths
same evening snd In the same church.
They have been frightened by the ever
hanging . "koodoo."
"It was ea old family superstition, said
Miss Bertha Perry, "and there were so
many people oomlng to us, telling us
stories of the misfortunes that were sure
to come after a double wedding, that ws
really lost courage to do anything of the
kind. Some one said first that It would
be one of the brides who would be sura to
die before the year was over. Then some
one else told us that It would be one of the
men.
"There are e dozen different versions of
the evils that oome to those who are dar
ing enough to defy fate with a double wed
ding, and we heard each one of .them a
dosen ways. The ladder, moon and thir
teen hoodoos can't compare with this one.
But ws wanted to be married at the same
church and on the same night, and so ws
era going to srrange it Just as nearly as
ws can without having a double wedding.
Maybe it Is superstition, but when you get
married you want all the omens right."
Miss Sarah Perry shares In her slater's
view.
"There Is no use in going looking for
trouble," she says cheerfully, "snd we
don't wsnt to have our wedding day
clouded even by ths Idea of an old super
stition. It may be silly, but one cannot
help thinking about It, and that would be
somtthng not conductive to absolute hap
piness. And a we're taking the safer
way."

All the town of Jerstyvllle, 111., turned
out Monday night with tin cans, horns,
drums and every noise producing contrap
tion in ths town to celebrate the marrlae
of Daniel Matthews, the coy church janitor,
and Mlas Mary Fraser, which occurred
Monday morning In the First Methodist
church. Prior to the successful denoune
ment Matthews had made five fruitless
attempts to wed, but each time his feet
turned cold and he backed away from the
altar.
Matthews and his bride came to ths
porch of the little cottage that he had
fitted np and thar.ked the merrymakers.
"Mary and I are married at last.'' said
Matthews in his address, "and we will be
happy. We ought to be, ought we not,
Mary?"
"We certainly ought," replied Mary, with
a smile.
The first time Matthews promised to go
before the minister was two yars ago.

out a patent for transmitting without any
metallic connection between the sending
and receiving stations both pictures and
writing for distances beyond WiO miles. Hs
oan transmit in five minutes from Bern
to Berlin a facsimile of a piece of menu
script without using any conductor, on ths
same principle as wireless telegraphy. Th
transmission can take place at any time
of day, no optical apparatus being neces
sary. Further, only the Instrument for
which the picture Is Intended csn receive It.
