DAY'S NEWS IS FAVORABLE Practically All the Loss la Hecovcrrd Before loe of Iar'a Oprrs tlons Bond Market I Firm. NEW YORK, July 9-It wa plain to be seen that speculative liquidation woi in progress in today stock niai aet to secure protlt sec-rued on the considerable ad vance which ha occurrrd In prices .nc last week. The effect of th.s In Itself was depressing to prices. There were point ot trength which had a sustaining effect on the general lint, but they were not In s.icn prominent Issue at yesterday and were leas peculiar In the demarcation and f j had less sentimental Influence. The outside buying order attracted by yesterday strong allowing were taheii ad vantage of to supply stock In profit taking sales and this kind of soiling lecuir.u pretty regularly at ull favorable opportu nities. The chango In the tt mper of tin speculation was not based on any new de velopment affecting general coiHillion unless It were a sugKsiiun current at one time that preconceived notions of toe ac tion to bo taken by the democratic con vention at Denver might be upset. The reactionary tendency ot I'nlted states 8. eel stocks after yesterday's brilliant display of strength was a marked restraining influ ence of any upward tendency elsewhere. The view of the leading trade authorities In their weekly review of the progress of betterment In the Industry w.i In ratlrer striking contrast with the matter on that subject which was passed about the floor or the 8tock exchanBe by word of mouth while toe steel stocks were soaring and tills contrast had some chilling tried. There is general confidence, on the other hand, that the Quarterly report ot the bteoi corporation to be published later In the month will show a suoetantiai expansion In the volume of unfilled orders on hand at the expiration of the quarter. There waa obvious profit taking going on in Vnlon 1'aclflc, with the powerful senti mental effect on the whole list, which this stock has come to have. The strong fea tures were not more than sufilclent to bal ance these depressing factors, other metal Industrial Were substituted foT the steel stock In the upward movement. Another rise In the London price of copper helped the copper stocks. Baltimore & Onlo showed a favorable effect from the main tenance of the dividend on a 6 per cent basis, expectation having been of a reduc tion at least to a 6 and perhaps to a 4 per cent basis. The good effect on the stock wa moderated by the announce ment that the profit and loss surplus had been enchroached upon to the extent of 31.800,000 no pay the dividend. A an af firmation of confidence In an early restora tion of earning power of the rahroads by an influential authority In both railroading and finance, the action wa not without Influence In keeping up hopeful options Another center of strength was In the northwestern granger group. Thl revived old rumors of an Intended extra disburse ment on Northern Faclflo stocks. A more substantial factor was the brilliant spring wheat prospect and the reported prepara tlon of. railroads In that territory for i heavy traffic movement by calling home their freight equipment. Weekly statements of the great foreign bank showed the usual revulsion from the violent strain of the great periodical money settlement. In the local money market re turn ot government deposits thus far made ha been offset by the government tils bursemenU In payment of obligations and appropriation. The day' profit taking wa conducted cautiously and without serious Inroad on price at any time. Whatever decline were Involved were mane up be fore the end of the day, with the growing strength ot the sustaining stocks In the dealing. Bonds were firm. Total sale, par value, were 33,804,000. Still the total for the week to date I running way behind last week and only about one half a large as a year ago. There are two reasons apparent for the light runs. In the first place the supply of fed cattle In the country Is pretty well exhausted. while It Is still too early for very many grassers to arlve. On the other band the fact that farmers are extremely uusy in their fields would have a tendency to re duce receipts somewhat. Beside that. In some sections there have been very heavy rains, making the road almoat Impassable In spite of the fact that beef steers were In verv lliiht buddIv thl morning, the mar ket wa the slowest that it has been In a long time. It seemed as If buyers had come to the conclusion to take off a great big chunk. Thus, in addition to being iow, beef ateers were anywhere from l&niWc lower. While there were no strictly choice cattle on sale It was very evident that the decline waa fully as murli, ir not more, on pretty good heavy cattle as on ths lighter and commoner kinds. Good cows and heifers were free sellers at rrlcea that were fully steady with yes terday. Another bunch of western spayed heifers brought 86.00, the same price as was paid for them the first of the week, and there were fed cows stood enough to bring 86.26. Tbe commoner to medium kinds of both cows and heifers were very slow. common old cows especially being very hard to move, buyers seeming to oe pretty well filled ud on that kind. There were very few stockers and feeders In sight and very few wjanted. While there were hardly enough to really test the market, nevertheless tbe feeling waa lower. Operators on the market are an ticipating rather a quiet trade for some days to come. It being pointed out that farmers never were so busy In the fields as they are at the present time as they are still working on tneir corn, wnua nay and harvesting Is st hand.
