Business al lArger nt the Stock exchange In the late hours before noon todav than yeslerriav even with the sudden revival in market elvltv which marked that period 1 ills expanding volume of business waa dona at prices above yesteraay closing ami cnn srquently a sutwitantlal advance ovar the closing level of last week. It became manifest, nowever. mar very material selling to realise was going on and this had the effect of carrying prices below last nights level ny noon. ine selling, even at that level afforded hand some profits to those wno ma nousui stocks earlv yesterday. As the margin of thet.e profits lessened with the reaction In price the pressure decreased notably. There was a considerable Increase In buy ing demand attracted over night py yester day' rise and thia served aa a medium for digestion of profit taking sales. When the execution of the new buying crders had been completed there was no disposi tion to push the selling on a weak market nl the serious epense of value. The re sponsibility of an uncovered short Interest for part of the new demand waa rpoved bv the number of shares borrowed for de livery which were returned to the leaders todav. The market la admittedly largely In professional hands, and It la gauged Dy technical considerations. News bearing on actual values was not Important today. The New York bank are returning their ?uota of the government deposits recalled or payment by July 15, and have already paid some Sfi.ooo.OOO Into the suDtreaaury. The stiffening of the call loan to per cent after having loaned at 1 per cent was attributed tothls cause. Attention was attracted to reports from Washington purporting to explain the Treasury department's recall rf government deposits as designed to stiffen the money market, as much as to fortify the treas ury's cash holdings. The redundancy of money at present Is believed to tend to force gold out of the country, while the Treasury department de.'lie the money market to handle the fall requirements as much aa possible, without recourse to treasury assistance. Llecounts were firm todsy In berlln a.nd Ixindon, the latter market being affected bv heavy over-stib-fcrlptlon to the new Irish loan. At the same time, the advance In foreign ex. change here established a margin of rrofit on gold exports to France. International bankers asserted that had gold bars bien available at the assay office, they would have been taken today for sMIumsnt to Paris. Meantime, Seattle assay office checks for JI.KO.CKO to $1,60U,COO Alaskan gold have been paid here this week. The Inter view with Chairman aOry of the United tSates Bteel board, on the eve of his de pariure for Europe, was of cheerful Influ ence on speculative sentiment, and there was some enlarged bujlng of L'nited tSates Steel share Induced bv the views there expressed of coming Industrial Improve ment. In fact so light that there waa hardly enough of any one kind on sale to make a market. All told only forty-five cars were reported In, an extremely light run for the early part of Ihe week. The meager recelpta are generally ascribed to the heavy rains and consequent high water at several points on the lines of railroads. Buyers of beef steers were out In good season in the morning, and the dozen loada of cornfeds sold quite readily at prices KXd 16c higher than yesterday. It will be re membered that th market yesterday was decidedly higher, the close being especially strong. For the two days the market Is safely 25c higher and It would be possible to point out ssles that were probably as much as 40c higher than last week low point. Among the offerings were a few westerns which also sold at very satisfac tory prices, a string of South Dakota going at J4.7.Vu0 0ti. A two-load bunch of very good cornfed steers sold as high a $8.10, being the best price paid so far thl year and the highest prlca of any year since 1902, when $8.15 waa paid, that price being the highest In tha history of this market. Cows and heifer were higher, the same a beef steers, showing Just about the same advance for the day and for the week a noted above. The trade was reasonably ac tive, so that the few loads on sale changed hands In good season. There were only a few sprinkling lots of toeker and feeder, not enough to make a real test of the market, but the few com manded steady prices. If anything, the feeling val a little better than yesterday.
