Amerlran Locomotive Itlsri Five
Points on Declaration of Rear
nlar Dividend and Traders
Are laaaht "hart.
NEW YORK. June 26.-The siilftlng fluc
tuations In prices today marked the lack of
apeculatlve conviction on the present small
operators who mad up the n.arket. 1'srt
of the Idleness and Indifference of the trml-
ng is attributable to the seasonable dlsln.
ollnailort to efforts and the desire for va-
tlon leisure. Demand for securities Is
almost stagnant. The professional traders
who would he disposed to operste on the
bear side of the market tvnder these cir
cumstances are tlimld about making com
mittments owing to the smsll floating sup
ply of stocks and the occasional demon
stration of the extent towhlch unfavorable
factors have been discounted In the price
level.
The action of American Locomotive todav
served ss an object lesson to liear traders
who did not observe sufficient caution In
selling stocks short. The declaration of
the usual uuarterlv dividend on that stock
proved an agreeable surprise to some hold
ers and a corresponding unpleasant shock
to the bears who have assumed with great
confidence that the dividend was to be re
deuced or even passed. The basis for this
assumption was the known heavy decline
in traffic of the railroads, their forced tc
sort to economics and their selection for
first observation of these economics of the
usual expendlturea for new equipment. Not
only have the railroad equipment com
panies suffered from curtailment of out
lay for new expendlturea. but the financial
disturbance last fall threw Into arrears
Urge amounta of paymonta for equipment
already delivered. The success of the new
bond flotations by many of the railroads
recently has served to relieve somewhat
tbe latter phase of the troubles of the com
panies dealing In equipment. Now the con-
ilderatlon of these tacts that had driven
American Locomotive down to a price out
of line with a 5 per cent dividend stock.
Tha price was run up over 6 points today
when the regular dividend wae declared.
The strength of American Car was partly
in sympathy, notwithstanding the different
policy already pursued by that company
In a reduction of the dlvlden.l rate. The
financial strength of the company revealed
by tne annual report also helped tne car
oompnny. The sustaining Influence ot inese
ami a few other advances was offset at one
time during the day bv the renewed unset-
tlemetit In the Rock Island and subsidiary
securities snd In some of the Qould group.
There was nothing new to explain the
weakness of the Rock Island securities
but It gave color to reported rumors of a
reorganisation of the company's finances
In prospect. Reports of crop news carried
during the day allegations of extensive
damage to winter wheat had some influ
ence In the stock market at one time,
These reoorts were denied and th weak
ness of the wheat market in response to
the denials gave them force. J. P. Morgan
was reporteo, on tne eve or nie return io
Europe, ss declaring himself optimistic
over the financial outlook, snd this utter
ance waa of effect In the late firmness of
the market, which was held until tne cios-

is better than idle money in the bank. A wise man keeps his
capital at work, makes it earn a good rate of interest and
demands good security. The Updike Grain Co. of Omaha
offers to the people of Towa and Nebraska 8200,000 of 7 per
cent preferred stock in shares of S100 each. The rate is bet
ter than can be had on any other safe investment; the security
is as good or
Better Xlran a Farm lVlortQage.
The Updike Grain Co. secures the stock with its entire assets, consist
ing of one hundred grain elevators in Iowa and Nebraska; its great terminal
elevators at Omaha, McCook and Missouri Valley and the valuable real estate"
on which they stand; the Updike Lumber & Coal Co., the Updike Milling
Co., the Updike Commission Co., all in the city of Omaha. The entire
security for this $'200,000 of stock is more than one and one-half million dol

wants the people of Iowa and Nebraska to become stockholders. It prefers
to borrow western capital in this way and desires the co-operation of the
western people. Why not put your idle money at work? Write for full in
formation or ask your banker.

The market on beef steers Instead of
being active was extremely dull, buyers
not appearing to care whether they got any

Offers Good Positions to Vonnsj Men
Who Can Pass Medical
Test.
Lieutenant Colonel W. B. ' Davis, chlei
surgeon of the Department of tha Mis
souri, is anxious for a number of young
Omaha doctors and graduates of medical
colleges to take the examination on August
I. for positions in the Medical corps of the
United Slates army.
"The successful candidates will at once
be appointed first lieutenants in the Medi
cal Reserve Corps and ordered to Wash
ington, D. C, on October 1, for an eight
months' course in the army school," saya
Colonel Davis.' "Cpon the conclusion of
the course another examination will be
made and all students officers, who pass
it will receive their commissions as first
lieutenants In the medical corps of tha
army.
"The psy of a first lieutenant In tha
medical corps Is $2,000. ' It seems to ma
that this' opportunity should be tempting
to young physicians. Applicants must be
between 22 and 30 years of ate, and have
had one year's experience as a physician
or equivalent practice In a hospital."

condition of the market. plenty large

the day before, that Is It was so extremely
slow and dull that It hardly deserved to
be called a market. It appeared as If the

If they did they wanted them at way
lower prieea. As a matter of fact no one
tried very hard to buy anything tn th
morning and the forenoon dragsed along
with not enough trading to really estab

The fact that Chicago came way lower,
some messages quoting a decline of ss
