Other market points had large run for thia late in the week. it l a noteworthy met and one that is having a rood deal of inllu. ence that Texas cattle are again coming forward in larse numbers at all the south era market points. Kansas City exoepted. where high water is stiii interfering with the movement of stock. The influx of Texas cattle Is naturally making Itself felt in the market for the common to medium kinds of natives and all kinds of short fed stock. Under thia influence Chi cago broke badly yesterday, being quoted liiASc lower. The aharp decline on the medium kinds of cattle Is naturally pull ing down, the market even oa the best fed stock. With the general situation at It is briery detailed above. It at net surprising that buyers went to the yard this morning with the apparent determination to buy beef cattle decidedly lower. Aa the offerings were rather limited salesmen naturally held on for pretty good prices and the lesult waa a slow, dull market, with packers very tn- ntfferent buyers. prices generally were hsjpuVc lower, although some cattle that Just happened to struts buyers' fancy pos sibly did not show quits that much off. The market on cows and heifers haa been very high thia week, the trade being In especially good condition. The weakness on the common to medium steers and the feeling among buyer that there will be plenty of cheap southern steers on the market to supply the demand for rbeap beef naturally made them leea anxious for cow stuff this moraine:. The result waa that the trade was lacking In the snap so characteristic of the last few days and prices in most cases looked around 10c lower. There were only a few stock cattle In the yards this morning and they did sot show any very material change aa com pared with previous days this week Quotations on cattle: Good to choio corn-fed steers. 17 66; fair to ' good corn-fed steers, 11 .Vi' 2P; common to fair corn-fed tteers. 15 On Of ; good to choice cows and heifers, . 14 T.Vrrt 26; fair to good cows and heifers, 64.i&iS4 7T: common to fair cows snd heifers, t:.2f4"f; good to choice stocker and feeders. 64 7f6l!i': fair to good Blockers and feed era. 64 001)4 76: common to fair Blockers and feeders, tLA-cgi 4 00; stock heifers. 12 0QvFl.su. The market was tn very aatialactory condi tion. Buyers were all complaining- about the break in the mutton market, oon-t-oier apparently being unwuiiiuc to buy the high prices mutton so thst eastern outlets are more or leas clogged. L'nder the prevailing conditions it was not at all surprising that buyers were Inclined to gt very slow, not appearing to care much whether thvy bougnt anything or not. In fact the trade waa about as near dead at it could well be and still have anything doing. Buyers were saying that the market ought to be 2&c lower ana were bidding as much as that In marry rases. The morning w ore an ay with vary little business being transacted. New and then a bunch would go to tha scales, but prices looked 16wi6c lower than yesterday, and It took a long time to tltect anything like a clearanoe. The sheep "talent ia all at sea and no one professes te know where he is at Last week the market advanced so rap Idly that It make their heads swim and thia week It la going low n about aa last The meat-eatera of the east appear te be at the bottom of the trouble i.hla week It was easy te put tha market up last week with the receipts so light, bnt when It osarne forcing tne hlgh-prloed mutton into consumption It was different. While the meat-eatera would buy a good ileal of high-priced beef, they seemed to draw tbe line on hlgh-prloed mutton. Thus at the bea-innina of the nrenent wees lackers found their coolers full of mutton, for which there was very little outlet, Tbey did lust what might be expected under lb circumstance, they stopped buying no freely, hence the dullness and deaaneas tit thia week's sheen and lamb trade. They aay that, although the depreesloa tn the freight carrying business I general at tbe principal ports. It has been felt most heavily by the steamship lines at this port. The laying off of five flight steam ships by the WMt 8tar Une last week was attributed In a large measure to the 1- vtrrlon of grain Bhiproents from thlt port to Montreal, bot many oil er lines besldea the White Star have also felt thia diversion. of freight keenly. A joint meeting has been called for to morrow between the Trunk Line associa tion and the special committee appointed by the Produce exchange. This meeting will be for the purpose of trying to get tb railroads to agree to lower their rate on grain between New Tork and th north- went, so as to put a stop to lb great In crease or grata Shipment to r-urope through Montreal. The steamship men do hut take the po sition that tbe grain situation Is entirely responsible for the present tlepreaaloa, but dmlt that It 1 at thd bottom of the trouble. He sat. that the shipments cf spring w heat was not aa large aa usual this year, and that the lake lines began cutting prices In their effort, to get full cargnee. Prior to thlB year the lake boat were working together in tbe matter of freight rates. But now they ar rigsting eacn other, with the reault that shipper can send their ETurope-beund grain over the water rout to Montreal mock cheaper than to New Tork via Buffalo, since th railways have held together In th matter ot rate. In addition to tbe cut ta lak rates, th transatlantic steamship men whose lines ply from and to this port find themselves up against a gradual Increase in rates which tha railroads fcavw mad during th last few years. They say that ha IMS and lrt tha grain rate from Buffalo to New Tork was TH cents a bushel.
