The Updike Grain Company of Omaha, Nebraska,
will pay seven per .cent on sums, of S100 and over.
This company owns one hundred elevators in Iowa and Nebraska
with terminal elevators m Omaha, MeCook and Missouri Valley. It
also owns and controls the Updike Lumber and Coal Co., the Updike
Milling Co. and the Updike Commission Co., valuable real estate and
other property. Its assets and resources at the end of its last fiscal
year amounted to $1,686,061.88!
Its-principal business is the handling of grain which requires at certain seasons of
the year a large amount of ready capital, . The present outlook in Nebraska and Iowa in
dicates a tremendous crop of corn, wheat, oats, rye and barley. More money is needed
by the company to handle this crop, and closer relations with the fanners, where eleva
tors are located, is desired. For these reasons the Updike Grain Co. offers $200,000 of
its 7 per cent preferred stock to the farmers of Iowa and Nebraska.
This' stock is secured by the entire assets of the company and is equivalent to a first
mortgage on all its property, which inclades valuable improved real estate in Omaha and
one hundred towns in Iowa and Nebraska. The interest offered is better than can be ob
tained on farm mortgages, the security'is as good. This is to run not less than three
years nor -more than ten years and the stock is in shares of $100 each. This is a home
enterprise, built up and owned by Nebraska men. It is solid, prosperous, growing.

HOGS In sdte of the fact that receipts
of hogs at thla point were very liberal and
that advices from other selling' point war
not particularly encouraging, the market
here was active, with price 2Vtft6c higher.
The advance aeemed to bo due entirely to
local activity, packer evidently wanting
the hogs badly enough to bid up good and
strong. The great bulk of the receipts
changed handa In good season in the morn
ing, the ale being principally at 85.303
6.65. with a top at 86.66. On Monday the
hogs sold largely at t5.47Va9j.60. with a top

CATTLE There waa a rair run of caltl;
here thia morning and, as was the case
yesterday, receipts oonsisted largely of
corn-fed steers, tnere being among th of
fering a llboral sprinkling ot good to
choice killers.
The market on beef steer did not ap
pear to be quite o active as yesterday,
owing, perhaps, to the fact that there was
a steady fall of rain all th morning, wh cli
always hamper the trade to a greater or
less extent, at the same time detracting
from the appearance of the cattle. To
some It looked aa If the wire edge was off
the market. Still, it was very aiparent
that buyers wanted the good cattle, and
anything that mlaht be graded as goi d to
choice sold quite freely at fully steady
prices. The top was $a 0). the same as yes
terday. The dullness of the market showed
Itself in connection with the leas deslrablj
Binds, which were slow, and In some cea
a littls easier than yesterday. All In all.
however, the market waa In good Condi
tion and the prices paid very satisfactory.
As the morning progressed the weakness
on the short-fed and common to medium
kinds of beeves became more apparent and
it finally settled down to a 10c lower mar
ket on that kind.
Cows and heifers were In moderate sup
ply and prices on anything that had any
kill to It at all were generally Kc hlnher
than yesterday. The trade was fairly
active at the advance and desirable atuff
changed hands In good season in the
morning.
There were only a few stockers nd feed
er, and while the demand tii not very
extensive, II was sufficiently broad to
rauaa the few on sale to bring good, firm
prices. ,

FAITH IN THE FAMILY" DOCTOR
Rival Medicine In Boosting; Health,
Provided tho Doctor
KnoTVs Mow.
In hi Inaugural address before the
American Medical association the new
president of that great organisation. Dr.
Herbert L. Burrell of Boston, called at
tention to tha revival of faith In th family
doctor,
There waa a time, not many year ago,'
when the solemnity and pretensions of any
quack who chose to call himself a practi
tioner were accepted as full proof of wl
dom. With growing Intelligence among
th people and th railing of standard In
th medical profeaaton, there waa a weed
ing out of empiric on on aide and a flight
to high-priced specialists on th other.
Now that tha fit aurvlval of these two
movement, by much faithful, skillful and
sympathetic work, hav ' brought to th
general practitioner deserved honor, It 1
doubtless true that tbe family physician 1
the most potent agency . for tho general
spread of helpful knowledge to prevent
bodily 111.
There should b no mystery mad of
sickness, a Dr. Burrell wisely ay. "Th
trouble la," he declares, "that w all con
sider ourselves when 111 aa peculiar exam
ple of some disease, when, as a matter ot
fact, all we need Is th counsel and advlc
of aom sound-minded family practitioner
who ha known u and our famlllea for
many year." ,
It Is, of course, th doctor's duty to
know hi patient at least aa thoroughly
s a locomotive engineer know hi engine.
Having learned the phyalcal. mental and
temperamental weak spots of each, it I his
duty a a conactenilou man of science to
guard them from strain and to set th pa
tient or the patlrnf natursl' protector to
guarding them also. The-; timely word
rather than the bolu or drench ahould pr
erv the health of the, family r doctor's
charge. .
Th doctor of today, with bis enthusiasm
for good work, may be rejled ''upon' tq point
the way to health without -regard' to his
own pecuniary advantage. Lat U hope
that before many more year he will be
paid for hi skill In keeping penpl well
no less readily than ho Is now paid for re
storing them to health after they hav
fallen sick. Chicago News. . .
