Rain Stops Western League Games; White Sox Win CRAM IS OUT OF THE CAME Injury to Omaha! Crack Second Sacker Proves Serious. BENEFIT CAME IS NOW PROPOSED Open Data with Lincoln Jaly IS to Be Devoted to liaising av Fond to Aid the Saf. terer. N. It Is now almost abeolutily certain that the services of George Graham are lost to base ball. He will not be able to p ay again this season. If ever, and the proba bilities are strong that he mill never be able to play again. The Injury to his knee sustained d'iring a practice game before the season opened has developed much more seriously than was thought and has been AKftrsvated by the second Injury when he went -in to play 'last -week. 11 was against the better judgment, of bjth President Rourke and Manager Franck that Graham, was allowed to play, but h? was so eager and seemed to be feeling so well that they let him go In. He en tered on the work with the snap1 and real that had always characterised his woik. with the result that he overall ained the injured leg and It went back on him. Graham was one of the most promising of young players. It has been a long time since Omaha saw any such work around aecnnd base aa he did. He is naturally bright and alert, and was as quick and eager as is possible for a man ta- be. His wonderful playing attracted attention all over the country, and It Is certain he would have been advanced to one of the big league teams at the close of the season. On a team that Is remarkable for the cheerful good nnture and willingness to work of Its members, he was remarkable as being a leader in the team spirit, and no one feels his loss more keenly than do' his fellow players. Graham Is a steady young man, the support of a widowed mother and her younger children. In addition to paying him his salary In full for the season. President Rourke 'pro pnsis that a benefit game be played on July 15. On that date Lincoln and Omaha have an open day, and if the Lincoln play ers will donate their services for the occa sion, the full gate receipts will be turned over to Graham. This will be fine oppor tunity for the Omaha fans to show how much they appreciate the splendid work of this young athlete, and how deeply they sympathise with him fn the misfortune that has not only prevented him from working, but. has .taken from the Omaha team one of Its brightest members. The Vlntonjstreet park should be packed on the day of' the Graham benefit. .. Darky and Hla Sioux. Come now Ducky Holmes and triba of Ploux Indiana to make merry with the Champions, for . four games. AUTKEY, WELCH, RAGAN FANCIED Three Mem Hers of the.ftnurke Family Who Are Probably "pending Their Last Bummer la - Omehn I nlforma. George Huff, former athletic director of the University of Illinois, who spends his summer months looking up base ball material fot some of Cie big league man agers and especially for the Boston Amer icana, was In the grandstand at Vinton street park Monday afternoon and watched Omaha and Pueblo play1 ball. " It wasn't as good as sons games I have seen In the Western league," was the only comment Mr.- Huff would make on the game. '""The Western league Is noted all over the country for some of the Al players It has si nt up to the big league, for some of the leading stars of the game at the present time have come from the Western." The visit of Huff was quite unexpected, aa It" Is much earlier than the scouts generally get Into the "brush." He camo tifrannounced and sat quietly In the grand stand taking tn all the movements of the players. His visit has made the fans won der which of the Omaha players will go to the older and higher class league at the close of the season. Ragan will go back to Cincinnati, as he belongs to that team, but Autrey belongs to Pa, as he bought his release outright from the Reds. It now seems almost cer tain that Pa will lose these two and the third, who la almost sure to go la Dr. Welch. The doctor haa been hitting at such a consistent clip all spring that the eyes of the base ball world are centered upon him. A hitter is what the big teams all want and when that quality is com bined with the fielding ability which the doctor possesses he Is pretty sure to go. Welch has been improving from year to year until now he is practically a finished player. Autrey Is the hit of the league at first base. Last summer chance put him on first on a trip to the mountains when Dolan was Injured. Pa returned full of praise for Ms new find at first. He waa put In to play first in Omaha, but nervous neas or some other cause sent him up In the air and he muffed everything which came his way. This year It is different. He captures everything" which comes within his reach. "When a player hits them out like that he will soondellver tho gocds." That was tne remark made by George Huff when he saw Austin bat left handed and drive the ball on a hard- line. It was not a safe hit, but the experienced eye of Huff told him that Austlrr'had done the wise thing when he changed from batting right handed to the other way. It appears he can see the ball better when he bats left-handed. If Austin should get to hit' ting the ball as a regular thing nothing could keep him In this league because his fielding . ability Is already recognized by all tne manager.
