Tha wheat market opened strong, on ac count of an active demand brought out by favorable conditions for the new crop In parts of the winter wheat belt, and by sn advance of mora than one pence at Liverpool. Numerous crop damage reports were received during the day and these tended to. add to tha strength. The-e wss liberal realising at times, but orrenngs were readily taken and tha market showed no atari a of weakening. The cloee was strong. July opened so higher to 18c, ad vanced to Ss and closed ftSc. Clear ances of wheat and flour were equal to icon) bushels. Primary receipts were IW.ons bushels, compared with 411. ona on the corresponding day a year ago. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of 171 cars, agalnat 170 cars last week and 275 ears a year ago. Tha corn market was firm at the start, her sum of the strength of wheat, but heavy sales based on more favorable weather conditions for the new crop soon raused a severe slump In prices. Tha close was weak at almost the lowest point. July opened HfiV: higher at 7.fi17Sc, sold off to ac and closed at AVyaniSa. Local re ceipts 147 cara. with fifty-two contract. Oats wera firm all day owing to strength Of wheat, and to aoma unfavorable news reasrding the new crop. July opened HtrO higher at 4.1 a V, held within that range and closed at 43c. The re ceipts for the week show a large gain over last week, but fsll short of last vear's rec ord hy a few hundred head. The quality of the cattle coming this week has beon good on an arersge, the arrivals consist ing largely of corn-fd steers, among which there was a liberal sprinkling of prime cattle. Vnder the lnflunce of a very good buy ing demand the market on good to choice beef steers advanced very rapidly during that early part of the week until prleea at the close are safely 6c higher than one week ago. with the tort actually 0c higher than anything brought last week. As soon as some of the more urgent orders were filled buyers seemed to come to the concluston that there waa no need of advancing tha market,- especially on the laat day of the week, and they ac cordingly dropped back to about yester day'a pricea. This made the market a lit tle atickv. but It livened up again and finally became sufficiently a.-tive to make an earlv clearance.
