NEW TORK, May 26 Measures were
taken In the stock market today to arrest
the violent decune into wh.m the price
movement had run on Saturday. After
tnee had been effected the proceediegs be
came dull end uninteresting, and almost
barren of event.
The day s news had little dirct bearing
on the market action, but a tendency of
views of the news to take color from the
market s action was perceptabie. London
was a free seller of sto, ks here In the f,rst
haif of the day. and tr:is was pointed to aa
a reflection of the unaovorable view taken
by foreign Investors In American securities
of the new activity of the government
against railroad corporations, s'gnaltsed In
tne New Haven suit. Less was heard of
that subject In tha local discussion, espe
cially after prices of stocks had stesdied.
Sorce gossip was afloat regarding sirpa
ilkeir to b prompted by tne suit. The
special strength shown by teiawire A
Hud-ion was founded on a report that that
company was to take over the New Haven s
holdings of Boston A Maine stock, which
are objected to In the government suit. Re
ports of flood damage In tile southwest
ern states ra ised e-irne misg:ving and tne
grain markets were not free from sign of
anxiety on the me score .
The outward movement of gold continued,
although wit a some symptoms of the de
mand approaching satisfaction. Thus. Pans
again secured all the newly arrived gold
in the London market, but a decline In the
price of bar gold mere and a rise In the
London exchange rale at Paris indicated
the unllklinood that the movement would
be continued. The Imperial Bank of Ger
manv s strong weekiy returns seems to
herald a reduction in Its discount raie. The
subtressurv statement showed a gain by
that institution on Saturday s operations of
til ii7 representing the progress t.r the
return by the banks of government deios:ts
in renns to the treasury cail. J hile
this completes the present demand of the
Treasury departirent. It Is considered cer
tsin iat further withdrawal will take
place at an early day. as the course of
the government's finances clearly toreanod
ows the necessity for this. Time money
rates were reported somewhat firmer, al
though not quotsble higher. Lenders were
said to be holding off for better rates
Prices made a fresh advance in the final
hour in the confidence engendered by the
success in protecting the market against
depressions and the closing was strong.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sas, par
value. B.mivin. United Statts bonds were
unchanged on call. .

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this mornina
numbered IIS cars. At the same time other
market points wera reporting light runs so
that the general situation seemed more
favorable for tke selling Interests than last
week.
With moderate receipts of beef steers In
sight, sellers all seemed to feel that they
were entitled to better prices than last
week and accordingly priced their holdings
a little higher. On the other hand the buy
ra seemed very much adverse to putting
on anything, being Inclined to bold the
market down to last week s level. Thus it
happened that there waa very little trading
early in the morning, both sides being de
termined and reluctant to give In to the
news of the other. Among the offerings
were quite a number of very fair to pretty
good killers.
good killers. The forenoon wore away with
very little being done. It being practically
a deadlock between buvers and sellers
Some cattle that Just happened to suit buy
ers brought prices that looked a little bet
ter than laat week, but other cattle Just
as good or better did not sell at prices
satisfactory to owners Altogether It waa
a d.sappolntlng market.
The supply of cows and heifers waa small
snd at the same time tha quality waa poor.
That Is, the receipts consisted very largely
of grassers. While there was a fair In
quiry for desirable dry -lot cows snd heifers
at good, firm prices, cattle showing grass
were slow at about last week s pricea
There were not enough stockers or feed
ers In the yards to excite very much In
terest. Speculators had cleaned up their
holdings pretty well last week and they
were all out In the yards In good season
tills morning, with the result that the few
desirable cattle offered met with qulto
ready sale at fully steady prices.
