BLAINE BLAST AT MINNEAPOLIS Hlvale4 br the ' Fierce- fry of "l-'eiar Years More of Grower" at Chi me Haw Kosa Orators Uehae4. Kour montlta heni-e and rlie presidential tickets of the republican and democratic parties' will have been named. There is much In the present situation, ao far as candidate are comtmed, to recall the convent tone of HI. Then, as now, thera wan little doubt about the names of the nominees moutha before the conventions were held. The shadow of Blaine hovered over the republicans at Minneapolis amic wbat as the Roosevelt apparition appears occasionally te tha O. O. P.' now. Clee- 1 land's nomination at Chicago a few days after Hsirleon had been namett by the fcublicau wu a foregone contluklon, Just aa many persons believe Bryan s nomination at Denver next July la prac tically aasured today. Notwithstanding the fact that It was pretty generally understood who wouia head the tickets In 18i, there were in terested aud even exciting incident in both conventions. At Minneapolis the Blaine men fought nobly, but to no purpose. The galleries were with him. but a majority of the delegates, contemptuously referred to by Senator Edward Wolcott of Colorado aa the "Bread end Butter brigade." were for Harrison, and they could not be swerved by oratory, emotion or cash. For a brief half hour, however, the Har rison men were plainly troubled. Chaun cey M. Depew was on the platform sec onding the nomination of -Harrison. He had spoken about ten minutes, worn he mentioned the name of Blaine. The ef fect was similar to that produced by touching a lighted match to a powdir magazine. The convention "blew up." Then and there began what was destined In the future to become a regular con vention feature the timed' ovation. The Blame men, elded lustily ' by 'he gal leries, took up the rhythmic cry of: "Blaine! Blainer James O. Blaine:" The chairman of tbe convention was abso. lulely powerless to check the wlldiy en thusiastic crowd. Mr. tepews face was a htudy. He stood, disconcerted and help less, smiling, nevertheless. The first out break was of perhaps ten minutes' dura tion. At the end of that time the crowd waa nearly exhausted. The chairman rap ped vigorously for order, and the con vention waa about to give attention to Mr. Depew, when aome leather-lunged del egate against started the "Blaine! Blaine! James a. Blaine!'' slogan. At the same moment. Mrs. Carson Lake, the wife of a well-known newspaper man, who was seated on the platform. Jumped to her feel and began to lead the cheering, keeping the crowd in perfect unison by using a white parasol as a baton. Parasol Hale. No similar acene has ever been wit nessed in a national convention. The first Blaine outburbt was more than In spiring. This one waa simply overwhelm ing. Kven many of the Harrison men were caught In the wave of enthusiasm, ami the next fifteen minutes were anxious ones for his political managers. Mrs. Lake did her part well. Assuredly hers was the greatest parasol flirtation ever carried on la the United States. bhe dominated the 12,000 men who stood be fore her for a quarter of an hour. ' In the opinion of many persons she came very close to upsetting the couvinlion session was unlnmortant. When the con vention reassembled ir the afternoon It was generally understood that it would not ad journ until a nomination had been made. A Trailing Coekris, Mr. Cleveland s name was presented and was seconded nearly all the way down the alphabetical list of states until New York was reached. During the early part of the sesslou there was a great deal of cheering and enthusiasm, but finally the crowd tired of oratory. As the hour approached mid night t lie galleries became a hooting mob, and many of the delegates were thoroughly disgusted. Mr. Hill's name had been placed before the convention, and every person In the hall knew hU nomination was to be sec onded by W. Bourkrt Cock re r- of New York City. Mr. Cot kran's fame as an orator had preceded him. The crowd wanted to hear him snd nobody else. So did most of the diiegates. Many of the ablest soeakcrs In While the storm was raging one of the the democratic party were hooted down arc lights became loosed from lis position without an opportunity to speak ij fcii and came swinging down oxer the heads fences. of the New York delegation, barely mis- , Finally, at 1.15 uii.uk in the morning of program. Had a less adroit speaker tlitiu Mr. Depew been before the assem blage she might have done so. However, the Blaine cheering laated be tween twenty-two and twenty-five minutes. Then the convention nominated Harrison and Held. Ter. days later the democrats assembled in Chicago. The late William C. Whtlney was In charge of the Cleveland forces. Not withstanding the well-understood fact that he had the situation under perfect control, seviral adherents of David B. Hill, notably Edward Murphy, jr., of Troy, Insisted upon having Mr. Hill's name presented to the convention. The day of the lamination was unpleasant enough outside of the convention hall. In side It was' almost unbearable. Hardly had the delegates seated themselves when a heavy thunder and lightning storm broke out. Parts of the roof were leaky, and some of- the delegates raised umbrellas. iuti a iireo ana most 01 mem were hungry. A more Inauspicious moment fur Mr. Cockran's effort could not have been selected. He began slowly, but his voice I could be heard In every part of the hall. ir. Uoswell P.
