CHICAGO. May 2. Reports at damage by
Insects ana a decrease in the vimme sup
ply were responsible in large measure for
a firm tone In tne local wneat market
today. At the close, July wheat waa c
higher. Corn was up "aiac. Oat were
He higher. Provisions were 5c lower to
2c huther.
The wheat market was firm all day de
spite a considerable amount of selling for
profit. At the opening the market waa
somen hat higher, because of cold weather
in the southwest, and a good demand far
cash wheat In the northwestern market.
Later tne southwest contributed much, bull
ish news In the way of dacisse by the
Hessian fly and chinch bugs. The greater
part of these damage reports came rrom
Kansas and Oklahoma. Shorts who were
anticipating bullish new on Monday In the
suape "of a decrease In the world's ship
ments were active buyers. The visible
uppiy decreased heavily and primary re
cli were only 31S,4 bushels, against
s,tM one year ago. These things, coupled
With a fair export demand, caused the mar
ket to hold el I throughout the day and
to clone firm. July wheat opened hkVC to
HfiSo higher' at trgve. soid between
k&'W&ric. and closed at 8ire, Clearance of
wneat and flour were equal to 4l.i0
bushels. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago
reported receipts of 216 cars, sutainst Sol
cars last week and 317 cars a year ago.
The buying of snorts favored a further
advance in May corn today, but the distant
futures did not follow. The close waa firm.
Jaty corn opened a shade to '0c higher
at 64c to frte. sold between b4U4Vc, and
closed at C4t'y4Sc. Local receipts 113 cars,
with twenty of contract grade.
The oats market was dull all day. July
oats opened higher at 4Sc. sold be
tween 4tH and 47c and closed at 4t7S47c
Local receipts 1 cars.
A large run of hogs in the west wa re
sponsible for an easy feeling in the pro
visions market early In the day. At the
close July pork was 5c lower at $13 3a. Lard
and ribs were each unchanged to Stfcc
higher at tS.46 and 37.2ZV respectively.
Estimated receipts for Monday: Wheat,
15 cars; corn, W cars; oats, 133 cars; hogs,

NEW TORK. May 2. There wa an ac
tive rebound In price of stock today to
the highest level of the week, for thoee
iau which have been most conspicuous
In the movement, which were mostly In the
transcontinental group. The movement
was a continuance of the buoyant rise In
progress whn the market closed yester
day. nd It was equally lacking In special
rews developments to explain It. Advance
were practically wiped out In the final
reaction.
The aggressive operations in St. Paul
were resumed from the same source that
served to impress speculative sentiment
vesterday. There was marked strength In
Chesapeake A Ohio, which waa also un
explained. The prospect of a strong bank
statement wa an Influence In upholding
prices. Apparently a favorable Interpreta
tion was placed on the reconsideration by
the New York City autborltle of yester
day's announced determination to lasue
HO.OOO.Orn of revenue bonds. The mum for
this decision waa not staed and wa ac
companied by the tatement that the
municipality wa In need of fund. A
favorable influence in the market was the
confidence expressed by prominent finan
cier newly returned from Europe In the
good prospects of growing Internet by
European capital In American investments.
There wss a decline in the private discount
rate In Pari and the London money mar
ket had the benefit of large dividend dis
bursement. The local money market was
reported somewhat firmer and, one of the
factors causing this was the increased de
mand from stock, commission house for
funds, which ha accompanied the livelier
peculation In stocks
The shsrp reaction at the last seemed to
be due. in addition to the selling to take
profits, to some misgiving over the accu
racy of the favorable forecasts of the
bank statement. The statement, however,
disclosed more than the expected gain in
cash and only a normal loan expansion, in
pite of the important operations of thi?
week. Including the Pennsylvania bond an-1
the Interborough note subscriptions The
surplus reserves of the banks ere estimated
In consequence at over 3b2.900.0"0.
The closing tone was weak snd with most
of the earlier advances sacrificed.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value,
82.118.000. United States bonds were un
changed on call for the week.

CATTLE There were no cattle here to
day of an c0naet4uer.ee. but for the week
the receipts have shown a very fair gam
oer Last week, but an extremely heavy
decrease a compared with a year ago.
The arrivals have consisted very largt ly
of be.f steers cf fair to pretty good qual
ity, alth all other kinds of cattle scarce.
A feature of the market was the very
good demand for the light handy st?ers.
which were free aellers every day and at
the close of the week how very little
change a compared with one week ago.
On the other band, heavy cattle on the plain
order were neglected more or less eTery
day and were especially hard to move
on rome day, the tendi-ncy being lower
all the week. At the cloae cattle of that
description are lUMlfic lower than one week
ago. The very best heavy cattle have not
shown so much decline.
Cow and heifer have been scarce every
day this week, as compared with the de
mand which haa been quite brisk and of
liberal proportions. Such a combination
never falls t make a good active market
and that has been the case all the week,
while price have gradualy worked upward.
At the close they are safely lutilSc higher
than one week ago.
While t!-ere was quite a sprinkling of
lock cattle during the early part of the
week, both tocker and feeders aere
scarce during the latter half. The demand
was quite brisk for the better kinds and
offerings met with very ready sale at prices
that were LVaSic higher then last week.
Good light stackers sold largely at tS.inxii
6. X and as high as 5.50 was paid for
good heaw western feeders.

H(h-.R Reeeints of hocj were very liberal
for Saturday, but it was apparent that buy
ers wanted the stuff and in spite or tlie i
large otfertngs the market was active,
everything changing hands by 10 o'clock
in the morning. The prices paid were fully
6c and in some case 7o lower than yes
terday. The most of the hogs brought
tb Xi'r SS. with a top at 35.40. Yesterday
over half of all the hogs sold at 35.40.
The recelrts for the week have been very
liberal, showing a gain of almost XMt)
head as compared with last week, with the
total about on a par with a year ago.
Prices during the week have fluctuated
back and forth, the market on an average
be:ng a shade lower at the close of the
week than it was one week ago.

, unusually large al this point, snowing a I
gain cuer a year ago. as a matter or lact
however, the actjal offerings on the mar
ket have been wry moderate, a consid'
erable proportion of the r'eipts consisting
of Colorado lambs on th"ir way to eastern
fading stations ar.d halted here only for
feed without being olfepi-d fur ale. The
demand, however, has been small all the
week, so that the reitirts were j.irnty large
enough to satisfy the wants ol liuyers.
The tendency of values has everywhere
been lower, prices at all market points
dropping gradually from day to day and
II. is niarket has had its share of grief.
Thus at the cloe of the week prices are
fully iuc lower than one week ago and in
some cases, especially on shorn !a:nrs. it i
possihl.' to show declines of 25uc. Besides
being lower the trade has everywhere been
slow and dull. l ackers' demands have not
been sufficiently uigent to put sny life
into the market and the trade has bcon
characterized by dullness.
It would tie well for shipper to under
stand that while the market here has leen
unsatisfactory that prices at this point
have actually been high a compared aith
other market points. Thu good wooled
lambs have sold right up to Chicago prices.
As the Colorado lamba are being rapidly
reduced sheepmen are beginning to feel
more hopeful of a better market to come,
bjt It is realized that so long as the de
mand Is as restricted as it has been for th-a
week back a very great boom in prices need
not be looked for.
