ILL WIND BLOWS NO GOOD
One Effect of Big Hats Is to Stop
Goaslplnsr on Street ,
Cars.
Gossiping on the street cars of Omaha
must cease, and during the summer season
women who meet their friends on tho car
cannot talk about other people nor Quarrel
over who shall pay the car fare.
Two women were the center of all at
tention In a Sherman avenue car Wednea
day and the discovery was made that gos
sip would be Impossible In the future. The
women were sitting three feet apart and
were compelled to talk In a loud voles that
they might hear each other. They could
only discuss subjects of general Interest
as every worij of their conversation was
heard by all the passengers in the car.
Nudging over and whispering soma choice
bit of gossip was impossible.
Many women declare they will not visit
at all on the street cars as long as It is
necessary to talk so loud and they cannot
sit closer together because of the. wide
brtma of their hats, which prevents them
sitting within three feet of each other
and leaving; Vacant spaces between each
pair of women almost large enough to pro
vide a eat for a 250-pound man If he was
abort enough to sit under the brims. So
far the vacant seata In the cars have only
been occupied by children who can sit com
fortably beneath the two "Merry Widow"
hats.
