MAffY BROKERS LEAVE THE PIT Some or Them Will Not Re-tarn t'ntll After F.aater Holidays Xaw from Abroad Is De press In a. NEW YORK. April 14 The Inertia of the stock market proved too great today to overcome and trie board room broker were disposed to abandon the attempt com paratively early in the day. The approach of a double or triple holiday is likely to have this effect on the market. Many brokers left the board room with the In tention of staying away until next Mon day, In the belief that no life will be shown In the market in the Interval. Events bearing on security values were few and of little Importance In the shap ing of the outlook. The arrest of the de moralised break In the cotton market had some effect of relief In Wall street, wTlere the slump yesterday was accompanied by rumors of collateral effects nearer the Stock exchange. It was regarded a some what significant that the renewal of the oft-repeated rumor that steel price were to be cut caused a hardening In the price of United State Steel. Amalgamated Rip per also was steady to the accompanli.irnt of reports that large sales of the metal were effected at the cut In price estab lished by the selling agency yesterday. Copper In London, however, made a fur ther decline and contributed to the heavy tone at that center. The weekly review of weather condition by the weather bu reau offered . nothing unfavorable regard ing the crops that has not been previously discussed and with corresponding effect on prices. The Chelnea fire was somewhat of a repressive Influence, owing to the ap prehension that losses by the Insurance companies would deduct something from the funds seeking investment in securi ties. Early offering of new securities on a large scale Is one of the features In the market outlook. Reports that contracts would be signed between the soft coal operators and the miners by May 1 were received with satisfaction, the stoppage of wage distribution being taken large ac? count of In Its effect on the consumptive demand for commodities. Price move ments at beat were small and or little significance and the further movement in low grade dormant stock had a disquiet ing errect rather tnan otnerwise. Influences from abroad were depressing and the further withdrawals of gold from London by Paris, together with a respotid Ina rise in London discount rates. strengthened the belief of international banker that gold would go rrom rscw York to Paris. A recovery In the sterling exchange rate at Paris modified the force of thl prospect ellghtly. Moreover, sur prise Is felt amongst New York bankers that the secretary of the treasury has not Issued a call for withdrawal of addi tional government deposits, owing to the growing plethora or money at tnis cen ter and the known needs of the treasury. It la thought hlirhlv nrnhable that this expected call would Issue on the actual movement or any goia out or new mrn to a foreign destination. This prospect may have accounted for a slight harden ing In the time money market today, al though this wa not accompanied by any active Increase In the demand for loans. Current reriemntlon of national bank notes is running heavy again and this Indi cates a contraction tendency In the cir culation. It Is aocompllKhea largely oy the Shipment of bank notes by Interior banks to banks In New York, whieh take them to the United SHates subtreasury and exchange them for legal tender to place In their reserve. TrunK line rail road stocks were not affected by a re port that grain rates east of Chicago had been advanced. Bonds wera Irregular and very dull. To tal sales-, par value, 32,860,000. The market as a whole wa in very much th sama con dition aa yesterday, that la. extremely slow and dull, with buyers determined to fores prices still lower. It waa very lata In the morning before packers seemingly made any effort to buy fat cattle, and shippers unfortunately were far from strong bidders, their orders being apparently limited. The market throughout the whole forenoon was ex tremely slow and dull and It waa almost midday before any business of oonsequenc was transacted. As was the case yester day heavy cattle were the most neglected and they In consequence suffered tha most decline. Prices generally looked 10a lower and In soma cases as much as 16o lower tnan yesterday. The supply of cows and heifers being light, the market on that kind of itnri was in better condition than the steer mar. aeu uooa cows and belters, or anything really desirable sold at about steady prices. Tha medium and undesirable kinds were a little sticky and hard to move, with prices in some cases looking a little lower. Stockers and feeders were In quite liberal supply, but tha trade was decidedly un favorable to the sellers. Th cosntry de mand Is proving very light, due possibly to the fact that the farmer are busy and that the lack of rain naturally makes them a little cautious about loading up with any great number of cattle. In conaanuenn. nf the slack demand from the country specu lators were very weaa Duyers tnia morning and tha trade was extremely dull through out the day, with prices generally a little lower all along the line. Ing, the receipta consisting largely of WOOled lamba. but with unite a aorlnklln Of ahorn stuff. The market aa a whole was very slow and unsatisfactory through out. Kttetern advices continue very dis couraging and it was very evident right irom me outset that packers had neither very large nor very urgent orders. Henca It waa not surprising that the trade should have been a drag from start to finish. Buyers picked out here and there such stuff aa Just happened to suit them, giv ing the preference to the handy weight, and such sales looked about steady with yesterday. On the other hand, heavy weight were very much neglected, n one seeming at all anzlou for them, even though th quality might be good. Th market as a whole could best be summed up as very dull and weak to 10c lower. Heavy wooled lamba were even worse than that, being not only a drug on tha market, but hard to movs at prices thai looked lbtgjfaoc lower.
