Oata were up Vti tc. Frovl blnna were unchanged to L"4c lower. The market Waa strong for wheat nearly all dHy. although at times prices reacted considerably on profit taking- aalea. The principal bulllah influence waa the numer iua rcp rt i which told of damage In western Kansaa and Nebraska by drouth. A material decrease In the primary move ment, however, was another Important lticlnr. Total arrivals were 281.00" buahela, tgalnut tWi.foo buahela on the aama day last year. The market cloaed rtrong. May opened MiC lower to Ho higher at k'jo to l"4c, advanced to tl-Sc and closed at JtlVfrfllc. Clearnncea of wheat and flour were equal to 266,400 bushels. Mlnneapolla, Duluth and Chicago reported recelpta of 190 cara, against :.t0 cars laat week and bib cara one year ago. Sentiment In the corn pit waa bullish all day, because of the continued small move ment. Trade waa light, however, because of acarctty of offerings. Unsettled weather In the corn belt aided the bulls. Tho mar ket cloaed firm. May opened c to "c higher at CT'va-iTSc. sold at 67U87He and then advanced to tt7. The cloae waa at 67-Se. IxuhI recelpta were 149 cars, with 28 of contract grade. The oats market was strong, but the vol ume of trade Waa small. The strength of wheat and corn waa the. main bullish factor, but the market waa also affected by dry weather rcporta from various por ters of the aouthwest. May opened Ne lnwer at KHo and advanced to 63V. where It closed. Iocal recelpta were 154 cara. Provision! were dull and easy. NEW YORK. April 10.-Th stock msrket enjoyed a considerable period of strength today, but gave evidence during the latter stages of the advance of a reactionary tendency. The advances were especially sharp In a number of usually Inactive stocks and the rather erratic Jiunps which were forced in these gave the market an artificial aspect, which begot a spirit of caution in following the movements. The professional element is proverbially suspicious of the passing of activity Into this class of securi ties, as they are usually the last resort of manipulation to auMaln prlcea after the ra pacitlea of the n.ore active Isauea have been exhausted. Thete was besides seversl con spicuous storks among the industrials which were almost wholly unresponsive to the rising tendency of prices and these proved an Increasing weight on the market. I'nlted States Bteel was the notsble example, al though Amalgamated Copper's heaviness also ftas of some sympathetic effect. The publication of a statement from Charles M. Hrhwab, ex-presldent of the I'nlted States 8teel corporation, fully concurring In the view with Chairman Gary published yes terday, on the advisability and probability of maintaining ateel prices, did not have the effect It waa apparently Intended to have. Thte waa partly due to the conspicu ous absence of any claim In either atate ment regarding present activity of demand or growth of orders. The repetition of pro testations of the determination to maintain prices carries an Impression of enforcing an argument to differing views In the trade, and does not quiet the persistent dumors of a likely reduction in prices. These rumors came from Pittsburg again today and were coupled with assertions of a further shrink age in ordera for finished products. There Were reports also, originating In London, that the selling of the Amalga mated Copper company was cutting prices in I-oudon. It Is impossible to secure any official information of the arts of this company, but the reports depressed copper securities In Paris. There was also another reduction of copper warrants in London and In the price of metal at the New York Metal exchange. The early strength in the market, outside of the specialties which have been referred to, was traceable to the Influence of the Erie financial settlement, the stocks of that company and the I'nlon FauHlc lead ing the movement. The assumption of buy ers 01 these stocks waa that more intimate relatione between the two railroad systems Would be the outgrowth of the advance of funds to the Erie by K. H. Harrlman Prospects for a good bank statement had some influence on the market, although the prevailing eaae of tho money market obscures the Importance of tho weekly changes to some extent. The promise Is for a gain In cash bv the banks of about $5.ouo,ooo. The fact that receipts from the interior on balances aa a result of the express movement are some what smaller than last week, waa accepted with complacence, aa a continuance of a full tide of the money flow from the Interior would be regarded as of sinister import as to the shrinkage in buelness activity. The sensitiveness of the wheat market to some reporta of damage to wheat in Kansaa from dry weather waa suggestive of the impor tance which will attach to that subject in the formation of speculative sentiment for the future. A rlae In the private discount rata in London was the feature of the day In the International money markets. Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value, $4,278,010. While the week started out with very bright prospects for the sellers of fat cattle, the market being much higher on Mon day, later developments were not so favor able. In fact, the market since Mondav has had a steady downward tendency, so, that all the advance of the first of the week has been wiped out. Heavy beeves have been the Worse sufferers and at the close of the week tlfey are lOigilSo lower than at the close of last week. Other kinds of cattle, while all the advance made the first of the week has been lost, are still at the close about where they were one week ago. Cows and heifers have shown less change than have beef steers. They did not ad vance so sharply at the beginning of the week and have not declined very mtioh sine. In fact, at the close of the week the general run of good cows and heifers are selling about where they were a week ago. Oood feeders sold very well all the week, but common and Inferior grades were hard to move owing to the fact that speculators are pretty well filled up. The feeling at the cloae is generally easier.
