In the' local wheat market, the May de
livery closing at a loss of fdo. Corn was
up lVWHiC Oats were unchanged. Provis
ions were 27HO to 67V4'Wo higher.
Sentiment In the wheat market was bear
ish all day, although a little steadier tone
developed late In the day on covering by
shorts, which was Inspired by a sharp ad
vance In corn. Heavy and general rains
In Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma were
chiefly responsible for the weakness. Fa
vorable weather for . spring work In the
northwest, poor demand for cash wheat
and declines at nearly all the European
grain markets were lesser Influences. Bell
ing throughout the day Was general and
buying wa. mainly by shorts. The close
was easy. May opened SHo to o
lower at WtHtJWSVi, sold off to 9to, and
coedat lA4c. C1eiraoe m-. wheat, and
flour were equal to 806,000 bushels. The
1 amount on passage decreased 1,152,000
bushels, and visible supply decreased 9tW,O0
bushels. The primary receipts were 6N2.000
bushels , compared with 1,067,000 bushels
last year. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 431 cars, against
611 cars last week and 74fi a year ago.
The corn rnarket was strong all day, with
the exception of a slight drop at tle open
ing caused by the weakness of wheat.
Shorts and leading, longs were active bid
ders and offerings were light. Unsettled
weather; a decrenso in the visible supply,
an Improved demand for cash corn and
reports of small country acceptances were
the bullish factors. The market closed
strong. May opened a shade higher to HU
c lower at 6V4.0 to 8&Hc, advanced
to (WStc and closed at 66o. Local receipts
were 343 cars, with wenty-soven cars of
contract grade.
Trade In oats was more aotlve than of
late, and the market was moderately firm
In sympathy with corn. May opened un
changed at 634.0, sold Off to 63Ve0 and then
advanced to 6Jc. The close was at &3o.
Loral recelpta-wer 196 cars.
Provisions advanced sharply .becaufte of
the strength ttf corn and liberal shipments
of lard. May pork closed 67t4u-4c higher
at $13.75&13.?7Vfc. Lard was up 37Vo at S3.0).
Klbs were 27Vo higher at 7.37Vi-
Ksttmated receipts for tomorrow are:

An area of low Rreesure overlies the
northwest and generally unsettled weather
prevails throughout that section. The
weather is generally cloudy In the upper
valleys and eastern portion and rains or
falling in the lower valleys and southern
state. It is much cooler In the lake re
gion, Ohio valley and eastern states and
warmer In air portions west of the Missis
sippi river. Unsettled weather, with proba
ble showers, will prevail in this vicinity this
afternoon and tonight, followed by fair and
cooler Tuesday.

prlcss of stocks was downward today, but
with a decline from time to time. Foreign
as well as the home market was rather
pressed, the New York reaction exercising
soma general Influence abroad, especially
In the coppers. Continued weakness in the
London market was reflected In the Copper
mining and Industrial stocks.
The sentimental Influence of this weak
ness is enhanced by the suspicion attaching
to last week's rise In those stocks as being
of manipulative orlggt and designed to fa
cilitate the exploitation ef the. curb mar
ket for a newly floated mining stock. The
breakdown In the much advertised pro
gram from the movement of the stock to
day aggravated the feeling of suspicion of
it. Tiere was no notabla thing In the
complexion of affairs as shown In the day's
news, but speculative sentiment took on
the Inevitable darker hue which comes
with prices declining. A pronounced effect
was produced by the slump in the Erie
stocks, which was traceable to the un
easiness caused by the sharp concession in
the price at which the company's notes
maturing In April were offered In the
outside market. Importance was attached
to tha movement owing to the knowledge
that a meeting of the directors of the com
pany was in contemplation for a later
hour In the day. The recent rise In the
companies securities has given confidence
that this meeting would develop a plan for
meeting the notes.' This confidence was
shaken by the market action of the stocks
and no authoritative information could be
secured from the company's bankers be
fore tho regular meeting. The tenor of
the selling of United States Bteel also kept
alive fears that liquidation for Inside ac
count was In progress In those shares.
Speculative sentiment was tinged by the
general conjecture that recently fostered
rise in prices of stocks might have been
designed to furnish a favorable basis for
some further necessary liquidation. Pub
lished reports of the views of railroad of
ficials on the traffic situation did not bear
out their claims In circulation on the
stock market last week of a pronounced
turn for the better In the freight move
ment In the country.
Attention Was given to estimates ap
parently originating from treasury depart
ment officials of the early necessity of an
other heavy draft on the government de
posits with the' banks. The present tran
quillity of the money market and Its ' ap
parent Indifference to the withdrawals
hitherto made have deprived the subjoct
Of any disturbing Influence. Operations
of the Treasury department looking merely
$o make up the revenue deficit would be
regarded with Indifference. The-: sugges
tion was put forth today that. In ad
dition, a replenishment of treasury re
sources was In contemplation by with
drawals from the banks that would Insure
sufficient supplies to come to the relief of
the money market In the fall in the way
that has now become customary. This
suggestion was coupled with an Intima
tion that attention of administration of
ficials had been attracted bv the growth
of margin speculation in New York and
that operations to 'shorten the supply of
government funds might be conducted with
a view to cut off this form of activity.
The effect waa somewhat disquieting to
the speculative element. The day's clear
ing house statement showed a subtreasury
debit balance of nearly $4,0W,000 due to
special operations of the United State
comptroller's office In connection with the
adjustment of banking affairs holding over
from the period of the banking crisis, the
exact nature of which was-not officially
explained. ., .
Bonds were Irregular. ' Total sales, par
value, 33.872,000. United States bonds were

CATT LB Receipts of cattle this morning
were very liberal at this point compared
with what they have been of late and
large at other selling points as well. Ever
since the sensational advance in cattle be
gan a short time ago operator on the
market have been fearful of a large run
and a correspondingly sharp reaction In
prices, and h.tve been cautioning shippers
against sending in cattle too fust. It ts
an old saying that a market that shoots
up like a rocket ts likely to come down
llKe the stick. That the fears of cattlemen
were not groundless was shown this morn
ing when under the Influence of the liberal
receipts . there was a sharp reaction In
cattle prices at all points. '
The market here xm beef steers opened
very slow, with buyers bidding decidedly
lower prices, and it was well along toward
midday before any business of consequence
was transacted.
Sellers were slow to make the conces
sions asked by buyers, but they were forced
to come to It. When the beet steers finally
sold they went at prices that were 16t2bc
lower than last Friday and fully 25c and
In some cases 36o lower than the high time
on Wednesday and Thursday. The very
fact that this market was high last week
as compared with other market points mads
tne aecune an me more snarp today.
Home of the best cows and heifers did
not show so much drop, but the medium
grades and from that down were both slow
and lower, the amount of the decline being
figured at 16c and In some cases as much
as 25c. The reason that best fed cows and
heifers did not show so much decline was
to be found In the fact that the supply
was not very large.
The sharp break in beet steers naturally
took the nerve out of feeder buyers and
they were pretty weak-kneed from start to
finish. There was some demand for ths
best feeders, but stockers were very slow
and prices were generally lu0l6o lower.

SHEEP There were no ateclallv naw or
Interesting developments in the sheep trade
this morning. Receipts wer fairly liberal
as compared with what they have bpen dur
ing the last two or three weeks, but there
was very little strictly good stuff on sale.
Packers seemed to feel that prices were
pretty high, and they acted very much as
If they would like to bear the market a
little, but there was not enough on sale to
give them an opportunity to take the bear
side. The result wss that about everything
was sola in gooa season at good steady
f trices. There were no choice Mexican
arabi to put a top on the market, but
pretty decent westerns sold up to 87.90, while
leeaer Buyers paid as nign as 17. eu for
lambs to shear and feed out. Wethers and
yearlings were scarce, but shorn yearlings
soia as nigh as 3ti.8& the same price that
thsy brought last week. Some good west
ern ewes sold up to 38-10, the highest price
paid lor westerns, although Mexicans
tuuohed that price last week.
