CHICAGO GRAIN AMD PROVISIONS
Features of the Trading; and Closing;
Price on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, March 19. The local wheat
market waa firm today because of fresh
reports of green bugs In the wheat fields
of the southwest, and because of the
strength of coarse grains. At the close the
May Unlivery wss up &c. Corn was Ho
higher. Oats were up H1i54o. Provisions
were unchanged to 6c higher.
Sentiment in the wheat pit was bullish
almost all day, although several times
during the session the market became quite
heavy, owing to liberal realising sales.
News received today regarding the fall
sown crop was conflicting, but a new de
velopment In the green bug situation was
the rumor that wheat In several localities
In Oklahoma has already turned yellow as
a result of the work of this Insect. This
waa the chief strengthening Influence of
the day. Minor factors were an advance
at Liverpool, small receipts In the north
west snd the strength of corn and oats In
tho local market. The close was strong
at nhout the highest point. May opened
ViSHo to uV4c higher at 9ic to SCVnt",
advanced to WHo, and then declined to
W'u. The close was 9UV4C. Clearances of
wheat and flour were equal to 164,000 bush
els. Primary receipts were 4OR.O0O bushels
compared with 1,000 bushels for the corre
sponding day a year ago. Minneapolis, Du
tuth and Chicago reported receipts of 3"8
cars against 3M cars last week, and 871
cars one year ago.
For the thlid consecutive day a new high
record mark for May corn waa established,
the top price today being fiSHc There was
a big trade and prices fluctuated over a
wide range. Heavy realising sales early In
the sesslun caused a sharp slump, but
urgent demand from bulls and shorts soon
forced prices up again.
Strong cables, small receipts and a re
ported scsrclty of sed corn were the prin
cipal bullish factors. The market closed
strong with prices at the highest point of
the day. May opened Vafto higher at
tf7fnl77o off sold at tWVttiMc, and then
advanced to 8hc, where it closed. local
receipts. 197 cars with eight cars of con
tract grade. . -
Oats were strong today owing to a green
bug scare which caused shorts to cover
treely. There was aUo a good demand
from bulls. The bulk of trading was in
the September delivery. May opened a
shade higher at 64no, sold at Mfcc anj
then advanced to 66c. The close waa at
telle. Local receipts were 199 cars.
Provisions were easy on selling' by com
mission houses and local packers. At the

NEW YORK. March 19. The remarkable
feature of today' stock market was the
entire confusion and uncertainty of Its
action, a reflection, to some extent at lesat,
of the doubts felt over the actual progress,
which has made towards betterment In
affairs. The reduction yeaterday In the
New York Central dividend rate served as
a warning that. If improvement has set In
In the business affairs of the country
there are consequences to stockholders of
the business contraction which are yet to
be faced. It Is not that dividend reduc
tions have not been expected, the course of
prtoe showing olearly In many cases, that
reduced dividends were taken for granted.
Today much attention was paid to evi
dences of necessary cuts In the distribution
of profits. The most Important Instance
came from abroad, the Rio Tintoa Mining
company (copper), . declaring only 40
shillings, compared with 47 shillings, 6
pence for the preceding distribution.
The response to the reduction In the of
ficial discount rate of the Bank of England,
from 84 to 8 per cent waa suggestive, also
of uncertain speculative temper. Coupled
with this prlmo Index of declining money
rates and of growing accumulation of Idle
money came the report from the London
market that half of the $10,000,000 Issue of
Grand Trunk Pacific, debentures remained
on the hands of tho underwriters. Some light
Improvement In prices of seasoned high
grade Investment securities comes from the
easing of money rates, but capital still
hesitates to embark In new Issues. This
same question hovered about the doors of
the conference of steel and Iron men In
resHlon today In New York. Demand for
ateel products from railroads halts disap
pointingly, and the argument is heard
amongst ateel men. aainst reduction of
prices that It would prove unavailing to
Induce buying until the railroads find them
selves able to float new securities and
find means for purchase. The prospect of
dividend reductions on railroad stocks
promises to affect resources of other com
panies, which hold those stocks In their
treasuries. Union Pacific's large holdings
of stocks of other railroads and Its reliance
on dividends from them to pay part of the
dividend rate on Its own stock made It
conspicuous In the discussion of this matter.
Speculative sentiment is sensitive still to
the news from Washington of the efforts
to shape the legislative program fo the
rest of the session of congress, especially
as to action on the Sherman anti-trust law.
Weakness In the London copper market
and a rise here In the price of refined
sugar were Incidents of the day. A fur
ther reduotlon on the number of freight cars
Idle was noted with satisfaction as was
the reported good chance for avoiding a
strike in the soft coal mines. Prices of
stocks showed gains at the end of the day,
but a rise from the low point of the day
had occurred In the last half hour of the
trading.

CATTLE In the language of the yards,
the cattle market this morning was a
"hummer." The receipts were very mod
erate both here and elsewhere and every
thing changed hands very rapidly at higher
prices.
Buyers of beef steers, both packers and
ahlppers, were out In the yards' early,
snapping ap everything as fast as they
could get a chance to bid on It at nrlcea
10416c higher than yesterday. Thus slricily
guoa ana wen rinisiied beef cattlo sold up
to $6.40, the highest price paid for cattle
aince November of last year, while there
was quite a sprinkling above the $6.00 mark.
Cows and heifers of good quality, In fact
anything belter than the canners, sold 10
fe'lio higher, the same aa beer steers, and
the trade was very acttve at the advance.
Practically everything offered had changed
hands by 10 o'clock In the morning.
In spite of the fact that feeders have
been selling very high, they, too. Showed
strength under the Influence of the rapid
advance In beef steers and were arenerallv
quoted strong to lOo higher, with all good
kinds active sellers.
Quotations on cattle: Good to choice

HOOa Hogs were unevenly hlarher m.
morning, early sales being anywhere from
strong to a great big 6c higher. The trade
waa not very active at thu advance, pack
ers paying the price, as It wers, under
protest. Btlll the hogs kept rhanglng hands
and a good share of the offerings sold In
fair aeason. After the more urgent orders
were filled the trade slowed up, becoming
less active and closed with considerable
of the advance lost. The hogs sold very
largely at $4.uli4., with a top up to 8L74.
Yesterday the bulk went at K6&v4.60, with
a top at $4.70.

SHEEP Lambs sold stronger this morn
ing, owing In part, perhaps, to the com
petition from tho feeder buyers. The trade
was fairly sctlve and some sales, at least,
were fully lOo higher than yesteray, stuff
that brought $7.00 yesterday bringing $7.10
today. Quite a string of westerns sold on
Thursday of last week at $7.00 brought
$7.&) today, which will give some Idea the
way the merket has been gradually working
upward.- Feeder buyers took a good many
of the lambs, paying largely 8B.807.10.
The feeling on wethera and yearlings waa
about ateady, but ewes, which have been
coming In pretty freely and which have
been selling at very high prices, were a
little easier than yesterday. Buyers seemed
to feel that they have been paying most
too much for their ewes and were Inclined
to go a litis alow on that kind of stock
this morning.
The report that the slieop barns In Chl
caaro were burning created quite a flurry
of excitement on this market and news as
to the extent of the damage wsa eagerly
awaited. With splendid facilities at this
point for handling sheep and with the
splendid demand, the feeling was that the
Chicago fire would have a tendency to
turn a good many sheep to this market.
Aa tha buying interests are already well
represented at, thla point and aa additional
buyers will be certain to oome, there la no
danger of there being too many aheep or
lambs at this point.
