March 17 There was some further speculative liquidation going on In the stock market today as a natural sequence to the active selling to that end In progress at the close of the previous day. The volume of the market diminished considerably and the tightening of the selling pressure berore the end ot tn a ay opened the way to an Irregular recovery. The rally was not entirely convincing to speculative Interests and the later mar ket fell Into dullness and hesitation.. The action of Amalgamated Copper wag Of large Influence on. the general course ot the market and the evidence of surport In that stock helped the recovery Just as Its sudden break the afternoon before had proved disconcerting to sentiment. Not much regard was paid to the news. The decline was accompanied by the expressed supposition that another message was soon to come from the president containing a severe arraignment of corporations and capitalists and the recovery led to a shift so far tn this point of view as the assump tion that the expected message was to be mild In terms and calculated to assuage the dread of security holder. The pass age of the Tillman resolution by the sen ate at Washington providing for an in vestigation of the extent to which national bank loans foster speculation In stocks hud a somewhat disquieting effect and waa placed In the general category of lnclu ences hostile to Walt street which are complained of In the financial district as representing a prevailing disposition of the times. While the price movement was downward, attention was paid to news Items of a tenor unfavorable to the idea of business revival. Reduction of wage among cotton mill workers was an ln stances as was also the report of labor difficulties on the Denver & Rio Grande. A projected government prosecution against the Chesapeake Ohio kept alive the Influence ot yesterday's supreme court decision in the packing house discrimin ation cases. Yesterdays passing of the crucible steel preferred dividend was sup plemented by some reports from the Pitts. burg district alleging renewea decline in the rate of activity In the steel trade tor the first half of March. Short soiling by bears tn the market has been constant since the signs of reaction developed yes terday and the necessities thus oreated made an Increasing mainstay for the mar ket. With - a recovering tendency es tablished the bears attempted, quite gen-bra-llv to cover and helped on the rally. Another rise In the price of copper In Lon don was an aid to ths making of higher Drtoes . for the copper securities although its effectiveness today waa in contrast with Its lack of Influence yesterday to check the decline. There was a reap pearance of deal rumors in connection with the recovery In prices affecting sup posed further combinations of copper In terests and also plans of readjustment among the Harrlman- uronertles. .'Con. lectures lrt which the trading element' showed the greatest Interest, however, had- to do witn tne sources oi tne money sup plies which were Instrumental In last week s rise In stocks and the further In tentlons of those wielding this effective nstrument. Loalrable killers for the most part changed hands In very good season In the morning. As there were quite a number of loads of pretty decent oattle, the sales showed up very well on paper, good kinds selling; as high as 86.90, Cows and belters of good sjuallty were also free sellers at good strong prices. As was the case with beef steers the most of the desirable stuff changed hands quite readily In the morning. There were few stockers and feeders on sals but ths market was firm at ths pre vailing high prlcea and holders of desirable stuff found no trouble in unloading. The quality on an average was nothing extra, there being a considerable proportion of fair to pretty decent kind of stuff, but no great number of right good or cnoice Killers, ' Quod fat wooled sheep and yearlings were In good demand at fully steady prices. Boma right good heavy wethers sold up to $U6o, ths hlgnest price paid for old wethers so far this season. Shorn sheep wers rather slow sals and the feeling weak. As rioted before la these columns, there is a tendency to widen ths rang between woolsd and shorn stock, which wss very narrow during ths early part of last week. The wire edge was off ihs lambs market today. There were no choice Mexican lambs, such as brought $7.60 yesterday, to make a test of th market today, but very decent western lambs sold up to $7.00. The moat of. the offerings consisted of fair to, medium grades. The feeling was gen srsiiy weak and the trade none too active. Borne esles of killers actually looked a little lower than yesterday. On the other hand, feeder lambs were In pretty good de mand and they sold fully steady, at least. Feoder buyers paid as high as $6.80 for good lambs to shear, which wers 6o higher than anything brought yesterday. As was tha case with shorn sheep, shorn lambs were also neglected to some extent and possi bly lor ins same cause, puysra seeming to feel that at prevailing price the woolad lamb ars tha better purchase. Two cars or good Mexican iambs coma In late and sold at' $7.85. For more than flv weeks th Board of County Commissioners of Griory county has been engaged tn the work of examining the petitions filed by two of th rival towns of that county which ar candidate for county seat honors. The towns which seek to capture the county seat from Fairfax, the present county capital, are Herrlck and Burke, two of the thriving new town of Gregory county. '" Under the law It Is necessary for tha county commissioner to make a selection of th town which shall be placed upon the ballot a the contestant of the County seat town, th name of only one contestant bo Ing permitted upon the ballot. Th selec tion Is dependent upon which town oan pro duce a petition with th signatures of the largest number of bona fide resident and voter of tho county, Boon after th county eat fight was inaugurated la Gregory county, the partisan of both Herrlck and Burke circulated petitions, and each so Cured a large number of signatures. Rather than be In session all spring and summer, th board finally decided that after Monday of this week It wod Ignore any new petitions or withdrawal that may be filed, and will render a decision on tha basis of those who had signed on petition or tha other prior, to that time. In vletf of thw It Is probable the board will conclude its task this week and seleet either llarrlck or Burke as the town to make the race against Fairfax. Dowafall la Wyoming; Light CHEYENNE.
