The oldest man tn Omaha died Thursday
afternoon at I o'clock. Orville C Ruby
was M years of ago and a most remarkable
man. II was bom in St. Iwrencs county,
New Tork, in IMS of English parents.
When a young man he went to era and

tho mast, traversing all tho waters of the
world. When the Mexican war broke out
he lncd tho Union army and served
throughout the war. Following that he
was a sailor on Leas Huron until 196S.
when he came to Omaha. Ha baa resided
hers since that tuna.
Mr. Ruby was married twice and had
twenty children in alL His youngest sun
would ba 11 years of age tr ha were living.

years old. He also has six daughters liv
ing in Omaha. They are Mrs. C M. Coffin,
Jr.; Mrs. Thomas Bowles, Mrs. George
Zimmerman. Mrs. Marlon Harrison. Mrs.
Elsie Umstead and Mrs. John Hutslef.
They were all present at bis bedside at bis
home, North Fourteenth street, when
he passed awsy.
Mr. Ruby came of a long-lived family.
His grandfather died at the age of 9,
while his father was cut off In the floaer
of bis manhood at the age of 90 years.
It was Mr. Ruby's expressed ambition to
go his grandfather "one better" by living
longer than he. but in this he failed.
Ha was perfectly conscious up to a few
moments before death. lie shaved himself
without even the use of glasses up to two
weeks at;a. His nerves were aa alady as
those of a boy.

about mowing lawns and duing similar
work and could do as much in a day as a
man halt a century bis junior.
Mr. Ruby was a believer in the virtues
of tobacco.
"I have smoked all the strongest tobaccos
of all the countries of the world," ba said,
"and they never harmed ma a particle. A
man who works bard and smokes will not
bo harmed by tobacco."
Two weeks ago. Mr. Ruby was one of the
merriest guesta at the marriage of his
youngest daughter, now Mrs. Marten Harrt-
