certain Improvements projected by Mr
Harrlman In this city will now be carried
out. Tou think at once of tha headquar
ters building. Well. I believe It Is not too
much to say that Mr. Harrlman will now
proceed with his plans for the erection of
his new Vnlon Pacific headquarters In
Omaha. I happen to know, though I am
not at liberty to allow tha use of my name
in this connection, that h was holding
back on this project to see where ha was
at.' "
The news of the Harriman-CTsh decision
was received with much Interest at the
local Illinois Central and Union Paciflo
headquarters. Officials In both places said
it relieved' suspense, that It gave them
. pleasure.
"Well, Harrlman won't want tha Chicago
Great Western, was one expression. "He
won't dare dissolve traffic relations with
tha Milwaukee and Northwestern snd tie
up entirely with the Illinois Central, for
he can't afford to lose the. business from
the Northwestern and Milwaukee which
he can't get through the Illinois Central,"
was another expression.
An Absolute Outlet.
The winning of the fight gives Mr. Har
rlman an assured outlet for his Union Pa
cific road to Chicago, aWhough, as a mat
ter of policy, It may be years before Mr
Harrlman may want to use that outlet
more than he does at the present time.
The Union Paciflo Is the main artery to
the west from Omaha and must rely upon
other roads to feed it at Omaha. This the
Milwaukee, Northwestern, Chicago Great
Western and Illinois Central are all will
ing to do In exchange for business which
the Union Paciflo can give them In re
turn. Should the Union Paciflo unite abso
lutely with the Illinois Central, to turn
the Union Pacific business over to that
road, the other roads would retaliate by
not feeding Into the Union Paciflo tha Im
mense volume of business which originates
oh those lines and which is also brought
from Chicago. .
When the announcement was first made
that the Milwaukee would build to the
' Pacific coast it was stated one of the rea
sons was to Insure business for that line
between Omaha and Chicago In case Har
rlman should complete his chain of rails
from Chicago to the Pacific. The North
western Is put In the same position, and
It Is an acknowledged fact that road Is
gradually working for a line of Its own to
the Pacific coast.
The certainty that Harrlman will get the
Illinois Central, it Is thought, may atop
the building of the proposed grain route by
Harrlman from Kansas City to the gulf.
It Is known he had surveyors In tha field
and before financial difficulties stepped
Into the road it was certain the road would
soon be built. The great Improvements of
the line from Lincoln south and the build
ing of the new line from Maryville to
Topeka, all pointed in that direction. This
road was wanted as a direct short mileage
line for grain to the gulf. With the chance
to haul this grain over tha Illinois Cen
tral he may no longer desire that new Una.

to the Real Estate exchange Wednesday

goods when you get the people to coma
here. That Is tha lesson which some mer
chants have learned at great cost. They
have found they cannot advertise a quality
which they cannot push over the counter,
"Now you can go to the newspaper offices
and object to, the publications of articles
condemning our dirty and ill-paved city
If you want to do so, and then go out and
advertise Omaha tha beautiful.' When
people coma here they will be disappointed.
You can't deliver tha goods. Tha first
thing to do Is to run ke Omaha what you are
advertising it to be. Clean up tha weed
patches and fix up tha paving.

deputy United States marshal up at Chad

of Mr. Mathews, who predicted when he
was shifted from the position of chief dep
uty in Omaha to a field deputyshlp at
Chadron a few weeks ago he would not
retain tha latter Job long.

be learned now, as Marshall Warner will
say nothing on the subject.
