exchange sold today at 81c, which la a
new low mark for the crop. At the close
the net loss for the day on the May ootlon

The wheat market was weak all day and
prices declined nearly tc from the close
yesterdtty. At times there were moderate
rallies on covering by shorts, but sentl
ment was exceedlnly bearish throughout
the day. The decline was caused by ex
treme weakness, at nearly all the principal
wheat markets of Europe and by liberal
Increase In the EuroDenn and world'a vis
ible supply, the gain In the latter being

Oats were weak. In sympathy with wheat,
sentiment being bearish all day. May

were 940 cars.
Provisions were firm because of buying
by local packers and a 6o advance In live
hogs. At the close May pork was up 12-ie
til 11.J7V. Lard was 10i2Uo higher, at
J7.37V. Ribs were 7Vo higher, at $6.45.
Estimated receipts for tomorrow: Wheat
28 cars; corn, 64 cars; oats, 88 cars; hogs.

NEW YORK. Feb. 18 The short con
tracts which were put out In esterday"
declining stock market made the aource
of the demand which cart led prices to
wards recovery today. The hears wcie
piompted to cover partly by the lack of
lerlflcatlon of some of the rumors which
helped to carry prices downwards yct
terday, but more decidedly by the fact of
the decline offering a small profit in the
buying of stocks. The market has dwindled
to narrower proportions from day tu lay
bnd the professional traders are eagti,
therefore, to take a quick profit when it
offers.
The recovery today was srotty and in
terrupted and there were points of con
tinued weakness to the list. As the re
covery proceeded the demand lossenjd
und left the trading, at times, lit a con
d!tlon of stagnation. The news of tut
I'ay offered no evidence of impotiant
changes In tho conditions which linve led
u to the present dull and neglected mai-K-t.
It was scattered sources reporting
the resumption of factory operations
which had been suspended on account of
the financial depression that prompted a
belief In a gradual recuperation In the in
dustrial condition, but the contradiction
of additional curtailment In other places
or other lines of Industry leave conviction
unsettled as to the progress of the revival.
The copper industry la a center of de
pression and securities of companies in
volved In It are showing lower prices,
In some rases, than prevailed during loo
panic episode of last fall. That metnl
declined again today both In London and
at the New York metal exchange, and
accumulating stocks in Europe threaten a
discontinuance of the only demand that
has been a factor of any Importance In
the trade for some time past. Discus
sion la kept alive by the marked weakness
of copper, of the contrast of Iron and
steel owing to the decision of the principal
producers In that industry to hold prices.
Repttis persist In the financial district
of a possible reconsideration of this de
termination by the leading steel Interests.
A reason given for holding prices at
the present time is the unlikelihood ol
lower prices attracting effective demand
from the railroads until conditions era
.'Oj.-ltio. for the financing of new pur
chase of material. Securities of com
panies with large maturing obligations to
meet and whtrh have shown at the same
time heavy inroada In the rate of earn
ings to the market. For some of these a
special explanation for weakness Is
offered In the selling of stocks which was
distributed In the form 1 of dividends in
lieu of cash. The Gould stocks, especially
Missouri Pacific, sold below 34 today,
touching a lower price than for many
years past.
