CHICAGO OltAl AND PROVISIONS

CHICAGO. Feb. 15. An advance In the

The wheat market opened easy on re

soon rallied moderately and throughout the
remainder of the day a firmer tone was
manifested.. The chief reason for the Im
proved tone was the strength of wheat at
the leading European markets. A decreaso
in the movement ot wheat in the southwest
however, Induced some purchases. Shorts
were the principal bidders, but the volumo
of the trade was not large, owing to com

CATTLE As usual on Saturday' there
were practically no fresh receipts of catile.
The few cjds snd ends on sale were picked
up at Just abcut steady figures. Hcceipts
for the week are about iS."i) head, showing
an Increase of nearly l.nun head over the
previous week and fully i." head over tne
second wo k of Febraary a year ago. Juite
a few very good, long-fed cattle are coming
hut the big bulk of the offerings show that
feeders aio economizing on htgn priced
corn.
The market started out In rather bad
shape on Monday but since then the trend
of values has been steadily upward and
cLsing prices for practically all graues of
beef aro lowl5o higher than a week ago.
There has been a well sustained demand
from both packers and shippers for the
well fatted cattle and several loads have
been taken for direct export 10 Liverpool, tne
tirst time this has occurred In sever. 11
months which indicates a more satisfactory
condition of the trade on the other siae of
the water. Local butchers have taken the
light and handy . weight cattle freely and
aithouiili supplies have been rather liberal
for the time of the year, the movement
has been free from start to finish.
Cows and heifers show fully as much ad
vance for the week as fat cattle, The in
quiry from local packers has been rather
better than usual while a vigorous demand
for shipp;ng account has cnaoled talesmen
to realixe strong prices tor an oeceni oiiei-
ings. Packers wanted cheap beef and cows
n,i heifers furniahed Una more satisfactory
than the Door grades of steers. The market
for veal calves has held steady all week
and bulla, slags, etc., are selling at quo
tablv unchanged prices.
rmiv a small volume of business was
done during the week In Blockers and
fu.rtern tin heins due entirely 10 the
limned offennas. lhe demand has exceeded
the supply most of the tune and as a con
sequence there has been advance of io'u'-Sc
all along the line and the week closes with
practically nothing left In the hands of yard
traders to be carried over to next week.

'hoGS There was a very fair run of hogs
here today for a Saturday and no material
change in the general quality of the offer
ings. In fact, there was very little change
In iha general conditions surrounding tne
trade, and lor the most part prices were
Just about In Friday's notches. The de
mand from packers waa possibly a little
belter than on yesterday, and some of the
more desirable grades, showing weight and
qi-allty, were a shade to 5c higher than
Friday, but on the light and mixed stuff
there was no material change.
Receipts this week have been liberal,
about til.ij0 head, or only a few thousand
less than last week, and some 13,iw nead
more than for the same week lust year.
The market has been somewhat hump
backed, the high point being on Wednes
day and the low spot on Friday. With a
week ago prices are now about lS-'liOe
lower and pretty close to the low point of
tne year. Packers have been taking the
hogs very freely, considering the excessive
supplies, but very Utile Improvement need
be expected in the generul market until
there are indications of a nyiterial decrease
in receipts.

That the trade ot the northweet I en

shown during the week by reports ot tne

On every hand It is as reed that the de

In some branches of trade prosperity Is
a full measure and other lines s,ow an
improvement that promises some "satisfac

All this ha gone to show that Omaha
is the Ideal locution fur wholesale houses,

"There have been no new development to

on the whole the trade on grooerles is

While some Items germ high In the gro
cery line, some of them are exceedingly
hard to gel. The condition by Items is
about as follows:
Sugar (uiet and unchanged, with an 1
easier tone. During the last week raws
sold in the east In a few Instances at a,
shade off.
Coffee In the east the market has drifted
from the activity of a week ago to a de
cided dullness and prices were barely sus
tained. Ivocaily there Is an easier tone,
with no change in quotations.
Teas The conditions that characterize 1
the tea market a week ago continue.
Everything points to higher prices, with
the cheaper gradea being actively sotig .t
at stiff quotations. All grades are In fair
demand at unchanged Values.
Spiore The tendency Is to firmness, with
the market rather quiet. No change in
Quotations.
RloeStrong and active in sympathy with
the advances in the south. The medium
and better grades are hard to get at an
advance of VaStSc per pound.
Farinaceous Goods Dullness 1 the fea
ture, with bulk oatmeal selling at 3bo per
barrel off. due. however, to the mills be
ing overstocked on bulk goods rather than
to a material decline in oats.
Tapioca Ixwktng upward; prices f'.rm
and unchanged. ,
Canned Vegetables There la H4.te change
in the general situation. Future pes a are
higher in the east. Ixcally tho cheaper
grades of peas arc hard to get. Eastern
packers are. more persistently than ever en
deavoring lo maintain prices all along tne
line, while the Jobbers are just as offUh
about buying except in a, small way.
Strictly standard tomatoes are firmly held
there at Stic. Locally there la no Changs
In the quotations.
Canned Fruits Canned peache are be
coming scarce. Unllun apples continue
weak. All lines are moving exceedingly .
well. No price changes to report.
Canned Fish Everything firm except
oysters; movement rather slow, at quota
tions which are unchanged.
Canned Meats Corned beef 5c up. No)
other changes; movement only fair.
Dried Fruits Prunes snd raisins easier.
Currants and dates are firm. All Unas aro
selling well considering the high prices.
No changes in quotations.
Syrups and Mulaases Market firm, qulot

Lincoln's birthday wa no check during
the week for buyers who are In this mar
ket for spring dry goods. During the
week the houses have been full and doing
a big business. There were buyers from
dislaut points and from tlieir report of
their local trade it oppeare that buelness
Is steadily reviving. Offerings will be
made in the Jobbing houses of dress goods
and wash fabrics and there la a feeling
that the spring buying will move off stead
ily from now on. In the men's wear mar
ket the end of the week will witness the
opening of several line of high grado
fancy worsteds, and this will marly com
plete the showing of lism fall iws. Agents '
in the cotton goods market are expressing
the onlnlon that the balance of the month
may continue qnlet, bnt that certainly bv
the first of March the buyers, large and
small, will be forced Into the market for
blearhed cottons, ataple brown cottons,

In the clothing trade tt Is declared
that the repeat orders on spring lulls and
overcoats, cloaks and separate skirts arx

already put their advanced styles on sale.
In the hosiery and underwear trade It Is
reported that buying for fall Is dull, snd
that the Jobtiers are doing less than before
In many seasons In placing orders.. Thn
situation In the lining division of the mar
ket Is complex and the leading manufac
