DANIEL IS HARD TO MOVE Gets Evidence Handed to Him and Calmly Sayi He "May Act" CONDUCT ASTOUNDS THE TOLICE t'aable to Aeraiat far Cltr Prw color SlttlOaT Br ood Dllbrr otelr PoawIbst t'o Kaowlv oda;o of OBTcaae. Though twentr man appeared In the of- flco of City Prooaoutor Daniel Thuraday ataraoon and accused W. Well Abbott, president of Lha Guarantee Hference and Surety company, of defrauding them of $2 each and though Abbott admitted that ha had been conducting a fradulent buslneaa, ha was allowed to go after pro raising to pay back to those who appeared the W which ha had received from them. The city prosecutor- merely said ho "would" file a charge against Abbott for do Ing business without a license. It waa pointed out that Abbott had admitted get ting money sunder false pretenses and thai there were at least twenty men ready to appear as complaining witnesses on . this mora serious charge. The city prosecutor said he would "see" later and "maybe would file this charge. Abbott's concern does business with an imposing looking letter head which states the fact It is a "Brain Hunter." The offica Is on the sixth floor of the Brandels build' lng. It Is said that mora than 100 men applied for positions and paid the $2 fea last week with this agency. Bo ma of those who ap peared before the city prosecutor said they had been waiting three weeks for a Job. A sample letter In the bands of the city prosecutor reads: "Tills will Introduce you to Mr. DeLay.' Moat of Them Had Sach Letter. Most of the applicants carried this let' ter of Intoductlon to C. A. Bums, 1116 Far nam street, They were told he had a large factory on South Twentieth street and was a heavy employer of labor. Mr. Burns, Incidentally, Is secretary and treas urer of the Guarantee Reference and Surety company. Other letters of Introduc tion were to the Rldgley Merchandise com' pany and to the Jewel Tea company, though these concerns say they never sought to get men through the agency. Abbott said he had bought the business of the employment agency only last Decern ber. He left the office of the city prose cutor, accompanied by tha men, and later In the afternoon he handed each the $2 In cash which ha had received. The nonchalant way in which Daniel has treated this case of open-banded graft. in view of his unbounded seal In playing the role of detective In recent cases where the man Martin, against whom,- It Is said, certain officials have some special grudge. was concerned, has simply astounded police authorities. They are unable to account for the course of a city prosecutor, who, when undisputed evidence of a serious of fense Is handed to him without an effort on bis part, Indifferently turns and says, "I may file a complaint against these men." Grain dealers of Omaha declare the weather conditions have not been so fa vorable for many years for wheat as at present. The snow of Thursday night waa cheered on the Omaha Grain exchange, and a dealer said: "The warm rains of tha week have been Ideal for wheat and this snow and con tinued mild weather Is tha making of a wheat crop. In a few days cold weather may coma without much damage. We do not want It right away. The snow, if it has bean general, la the. best thing whioh oould happen.
